Ranger-With Washington Area Humane Society

Name: Ranger
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: GSD Mix
Age: 5 years
Location: Pittsburgh, PA

Vet/Medical Info: Rabies and distemper (6 in 1) shots June 2010, Bordatells in August 2010. No info on eyes.
Owner Info: DOB Dec 2005. Rescued from shelter 3 yrs ago. Ranger is not good with small children (he is fine with teenagers). He has started snapping at his owner's boyfriends daughter, they have just had a baby together and partner is fearful for both the childrens well being and wants them put first. Ranger is an inside dog with the run of the house, he is house broken and leash trained. He is good with other dogs but no so good with cats, he will chase them. He is still a little skiddish on car rides but otherwise adapts well to new stuations. Born with detached retinas, slants to right side, maybe has a little bit of sight from that eye. Ranger is a wonderful companion, he's in great health and has a lot of energy and spunk.

Update March 2011: Ranger is doing really well but the situation with owners boyfriend is not good, he wants Ranger gone. He does not want him near his children. His owner takes him with her as much as she can as she fears she may come home and find either her boyfriend or father has taken Ranger to be PTS. Ranger really needs a new home asap so he can have a second chance at life!

Rockey - Adopted

Name: Rockey
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Pug
Age: 6-8 years
Location: Festus, MO

Vet/Medical Info: Neutered male, about 8 years old. He tested negative for HW on 12/6/2010 and at that time received a one year Rabies vaccination. As for the other vaccinations, vet said none were given by their clinic but Rockey's foster Mom may have given them herself. They had no info about his eyesight.
Owner Info: Rockey is currently with IL-MO Pug Rescue, in a foster home. He has been with the rescue a long time, no one wants to adopt him because of his disability. He is a sweet, fun loving, easy going boy who adapts well to new situations and is doing well with house-breaking. Rockey does like to have another dog to guide him. Rockey is almost blind, they are not sure of the cause. He does get a little bit of dry eye and takes over the counter drops for it. His foster Mom is happy to keep fostering him if BDRA can take him in. She feels we are his only chance for getting adopted.

Bumper - Adopted

Name: Bumper
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Blue Heeler Mix
Age: 5 years
Location: La Vernia, TX

Vet/Medical Info: Vets were unsure what happened to her eyes but both said she was not born this way. One vet suggested she may have been sprayed by a skunk. Eyes were treated and right cornea was clearing when last seen by this vet. UTD with vaccinations, all given 4/24/2010. Spayed 5/11/2009. Tested positive for heartworm 5/5/2009, was treated and has had regular preventative meds since.
Owner Info: Bumper was found as a stray and is now a rescue dog. Her owner fostered her for a shelter and ended up adopting her so she would not have to go back to the shelter. She was in really bad shape, her eyes were red & inflamed, protruding out of sockets & her eye lids would not close over them. She has a thick scar on back of neck, probably from embedded collar. She is a great house dog, trustworthy and very loving. Her foster Mom feels she would be better in a quieter home with less chaos as she has recently started being careless around the horses and other dogs.

Poochie - In Memory

Name: Poochie
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Catahoula Leopard Dog
Age: 5 years
Location: Houston, TX

Vet/Medical Info: Poochie is not up to date with vaccinations. Last had them 11/3/09. Last HW was negative but it was done 4/25/10. She is spayed, deaf and three legged.
Owner Info: Poochie has become more aggressive towards the senior dog in house, mainly around food,  and she has snapped at a couple of visitors recently. Family members are fearful for their 10 month old child and have demanded her owner find another home for her. He feels they may have been inconsistent with her handling. She was rescued from shelter at 4 weeks of age, Poochie has tunnel vision but does see. Born with five legs, two were amputated. She is an indoor dog confined to one are of the house, is house broken and leash trained. She is an outgoing girl, good with women and teenagers, cats and small animals. Her owner feels she would be good as an only dog.

Update March 2011: Poochie's owner is still searching for a good home for her. He has now also contacted deaf rescue groups and has approached some vets to see if word of mouth might generate interest.

Stevie - Adopted

Name: Stevie

Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Lab/Dane Mix?
Age: Approx 4 months
Location: Lincoln, AL

Vet/Medical Info: Stevie has had shots for distemper and parvo and has been de wormed on 1/27/2011. He is completely deaf and has microopthalmia (small deformed eyeballs).
Owner Info: Stevie was surrendered to a vet clinic and they don't have the space to keep him long term. Local rescues will not take him because of his disabilities. His owner was a local drunk and got mad at the vet because they couldn't 'fix' Stevie's eyes. He decided to surrender Stevie and told the vet they could do 'whatever' with him. Stevie is a very sweet and loving dog, he enjoys attention but is also very content in his cage with a chew toy. He is good with people of all ages and other dogs, cats and small animals. He goes home at the weekends with one of the vet techs and she owns two smaller dogs and a cat, they all get on well.

Bay Bay - Adopted

Name: Bay Bay
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: Black Labrador
Age: 2-3 months?
Location: Tickfaw, LA

Vet/Medical Info: Unknown.
Owner Info: Someone dropped Bay Bay off on a Good Samaritans road in the freezing cold. She thinks he is approximately 2-3 months old. He is a beautiful, loving puppy. He listens to vocal calls, clapping, and whistles. The GS has rescued and raised a blind dog in the past and knows how they seem to almost develop a radar like sense when they are walking. Her rural pound had to put all their animals to sleep last year due to illness in the compound. She does not want to take him there because it is not a healthy situation plus they will probably just euthanize him. She has said she is disabled, poor, and cannot keep him. Her manager told her she could keep him a few days just to find him a home.

Blink - Adopted

Name: Blink
Sex: Female (not altered)
Breed: Border Collie
Age: 3 months
Location: Allen, SD

Vet/Medical Info: Has microophthalmia. Distemper & parvo meds were given to owner, she vaccinates the dogs herself. Blink was too young for rabies shot or spaying when they saw her, she didn't even have a name at that time.

Owner Info: DOB 10/26/2010. Blink's owners/breeders have a working cattle & sheep ranch & use dogs for work. Because Blink is blind she will never be able to work livestock, they feel she would be best suited with a family as a pet. Blink is an outdoor dog in a fenced yard, she is not housebroken, Blink is leash trained. She has had lots of treat training at home and is a smart girl - she knows commands like 'Blink, that'll do' which is used for recall, 'Watch' for slow down & check and they are currently working on lie down and sit. She is an outgoing girl, full of energy, good with adults and children, other dogs and cats. Blink's left eye never opened and the right eye appears to have no sight. She is an absolute sweetheart and lives life to the fullest. Blink's owners are happy to keep her until a forever home is found or are happy for her to come into a BDRA foster home, if we feel she will have a better chance of finding a loving forever home.

Update March 2011: Blink is doing well but is showing severe fear aggression to both dogs and people. Once she is scared of a dog or person she becomes quite aggressive and won't back down. If her owner can't get this issue resolved she may have to have Blink PTS. She does not want to have to do this but her family is putting pressure on her and she cannot handle things the way they are for much longer. Blink really needs help before it is too late for her!

Houdini - In Memory

Houdini February 2011

Houdini March 2011

Name: Houdini
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: Rottweiler
Age: 8 weeks
Location: Helena, MT

Vet/Medical Info: Bordatella vaccination given on 1/8/2011,  Dist/Hep/Para/Parvo/Cor given 1/17/2011. Houdini has functional retinae but is non visual in both eyes (neurological blindness). This indicates a problem in the optic nerves or brain. If the problem is in the brain, these problems are developmental and sometimes fatal. His hearing is also questionable.

Owner Info: Houdini's current owner has only had him for a few days. He was given him and told he had an eye infection. Houdini's owner does not feel his home is suitable as the pup has fallen down the stairs several times. Houdini got out the day after he got him and ran across the road and a car drove over him - miraculously he was not hurt! He wants to find somewhere safe with someone who can take care of Houdini's needs. Houdini is an outgoing, energetic puppy, he sleeps though the night, has a healthy appetite and is learning to go to the toilet outside.

Update March 2011: Houdini is doing well, he is a typical mischevious puppy and is growing rapidly! His owner's insurance company will not give him home owners insurance because of Houdini. He still wants to find a good home for Houdini asap.
