Cal - In BDRA Foster Care

Name: Cal
Sex: Male (altered)

Breed: Chow Husky Mix

Age: 10 years (estimated)
Location: Rockville, MD

Vet/Medical Info: No medical information available.

Owner Info: Cal's owner is a single parent who lost her job and now cannot pay her rent so she is having to move back in with her parents - her Mom has pet allergies and also has liver cancer. The condition for her and her son to be allowed to stay there is that we no longer have Cal. Cal originally came from a shelter and he really does not want to go back to his old life. He adapts well with new situations and surroundings - since being blind he has stayed with several different dog sitters in their home and moved house a number of times with his owner, he has been okay with all of these situations. He is very calm and even-tempered. Cal appears to be completely blind, he has a white film over both eyes. Time is of the essence for poor Cal -  his owner thought a shelter would have taken Cal today but that wasn't the case. The movers are coming Saturday 6/25 and owners father says if no-one is able to take the dog by Friday he will take him to a vet to have him euthanized.

Oliver - In Memory

Name: Oliver
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Cocker Spaniel
Age: 7 1/2 years
Location: Elk Grove, CA

Vet/Medical Info: Oliver is neutered and UTD on vaccines. He's due in 2012 for rabies, lepto and bordatella and due in 2013 for distemper. They have not heartworm tested.  They did an enucleation on Oliver's left eye in September 2010 due to glaucoma and Oliver was seen this month (June) regarding his other eye. He does have glaucoma in his right eye, also, but it is not as severe...yet. There was no other relevant medical information.

Owner Info: Oliver is a smart boy, he knows sit, lay down, come, back, wave, bang (plays dead), wake up, stay, free, go to your bed, bring it to me (point to ball), where is your ball, roll over, shake, high five, turn around, drop and is potty trained. He is a buff coloured, male cocker spaniel who is loyal and very alert. He barks to let you know he hears or sees something, but does not keep aggressively barking. Oliver became a part of his current family in a previous marriage and he has been a loyal companion through thick and thin but, has never grown up around children. Unfortunately, his owners new wife is not so accepting of him now that they are going to have a child. Oliver can be aggressive around children as he has never been accustomed to them or their movements, he can also be possessive of his toys. He waits while food is put into his bowl and can be fed by hand and isn't aggressive when touching his food bowl. He has bitten his owner twice, once when trying to get into bed with ex-wife and another time when owner accidentally sat on him.Oliver's owner has tried friends and family but no one is willing to take him.

Lefty and Bubbles - Staying With Owner

Name: Lefty and Bubbles
Sex: Male and Female (not altered)

Breed: Labrador Retrievers

Age: 8 weeks
Location: Hinsdale, NH

Vet/Medical Info: 1st puppy shots (DA2PP) 6/18/2011. Vet said that new owner has done a wonderful job with the pups and their mother who has been almost breed to death and fed a poor diet. She has brought her back and has socialized the pups. She said they are wonderful dogs and she thinks the male Lefty can see a little out of his left eye. They did some tests to see if they could learn why they were blind but the tests didn't show anything and they are not Ophthamologists.

Owner Info: Two purebred Lab pups, DOB 4/20/11. Owner does not have the resources or connections to properly network them for adoption and needs our expertise. They have been listed on her website and on Petfinder. She rescued them from a puppy mill breeder who was going to euthanise them. They are shy puppies, right eye of male pup has thick cataract, both eyes of female pup have "strands" and partial cataracts. The puppies are otherwise very healthy. Have been wormed multiple times and have been on raw meat and grain free food.

Shilo - In Memory

Name: Shilo
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Spaniel Mix
Age: 11 years
Location: Alden, NY

Vet/Medical Info: Shilo is up to date with all vaccinations including rabies. They are all due again in April 2012. He is neutered and Heartworm negative. They have no info about his eyes other than a notation that he is blind. He is on no meds. They have only seen him twice, once when they first got him and once for the vaccinations.
Owner Info: Shilo is with a rescue but his old foster Mom can no longer care for him. They had been trying for 6 months to find him a home, they finally found one however the woman is now complaining because he has had a few accidents in her home (which might be due to a UTI) not sure but they are willing to have his urine checked just to be on the safe side. He also has gotten in the garbage ONCE!! :( He is a very easy and sweet dog but due to age and blindness, they feel might be the reason they cannot find him a home. At this time they NEED to remove him from his owner and they have no place to put him. He freaks out around other dogs and animals but is wonderful otherwise. Shilo lost his owner a few years back and lost his eye sight about 6 years ago. The owner dumped him with a friend who has cats so that situation did not work out. She then sent him to the rescue. They feel bad for Shilo, he has been moved around so much, poor guy just gets settled in a home and has to do it all over again. Any help would be much appreciated. He has one glass eye and the other has been removed.

Dudley - Adopted

Name: Dudley
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Cocker Spaniel
Age: 10 years
Location: Carthage, IL

Vet/Medical Info: Dudley is neutered and UTD on vaccines including kennel cough, distemper, parvo and rabies. Dudley had been treated for heartworm in June 2005, and they have not sold any heartworm preventative recently, so they could NOT say he's heartworm negative. Owner may have bought HeartGuard or other preventative somewhere else. Dudley has NOT been tested for heartworm by them. Dudley has been blind since birth, only other medical information was he's been on antibiotics occasionally, for skin condition.

Owner Info: Dudley's owner has to move to Chicago to live with and become caregiver for her 90 year old mother who has alzheimers and has recently suffered two strokes. Her Mom has always been deathly afraid of dogs and her current condition makes her fear of dogs worse and there is no reasoning with her anymore. Dudley's owner has contacted several different rescue organizations and through their efforts, networked with many people who have in turn been contacting their resources. Many emails have been sent and received and many phone calls made. She has put the word out with all her friends, neighbors, church members and acquaintances. Dudley was rescued 6 years ago from a Hearts of Hancock (which no longer exists), they rescued him from being euthanized, removed the collar that had grown into the back of his neck, groomed him, had him neutered and they adopted him from them. His first 4 years of life appear to have been miserable, he was evidently neglected and mistreated, found wandering around with no tags, matted, and obviously having had to fend for himself for quite a while. Dudley is very mild mannered, he does not have any interest in toys. He is an indoor dog with the run of the house, is housebroken but not leash trained. He is good with all people, other dogs and cats. He adapts very well, has been boarded and traveled. Uses his nose like a blind person would use their cane to "feel" his way around and to judge how high he needs to jump up into the car etc. He is very "laid back" and friendly, loves visitors and going out to visit friends. Dudley was diagnosed 6 years ago with impaired optic plates but was still able to see some movement and distinguish light/dark. Developed cataracts 2 years ago and now is totally blind, he relies on his acute sense of smell and hearing.  He has been well cared for and had a wonderful life and received much love and everything he could possibly want or need since then. It's very painful for his owner to have to give him up since she just lost her husband to cancer 1 year ago. It breaks her heart to have to consider having him PTS because she can't find a home for him.

Tequila and Rascal - Rascal Adopted, Tequila in BDRA Foster Care

Name: Tequila and Rascal
Sex: Males (Tequila not altered, Rascal altered)
Breed: Pomeranian/Chihuahua mix
Age: 7 years
Location: Erwinna, PA

Vet/Medical Info: Tequila was last at vet 2/15/11, was heartworm and lyme negative, had lepto vaccine, is neutered, birth date 2004. Had vaccines from previous vet (Quakertown) with previous owner - 3 year distemper 11/20/09 and 3 year rabies 3/13/08, so is overdue for rabies. They had no information on Tequila's blindness and no other relevant medical info. Rascal is an intact male, also 2004 birth date. He was also last seen 2/15/11, was heartworm and lyme negative, had lepto vaccine. Also had other vaccines from previous vet (Quakertown), 3 year distemper given 11/20/09 and 3 year rabies given 3/13/08, overdue for rabies. No info on blindness, teeth not in great shape.

Owner Info: Tequila and Rascal's owner passed away and they are being cared for by an elderly lady whose husband's health has recently taken a turn for the worse. She needs to care for him and does not have the time to give these two precious boys the love and care they deserve. She has four cats and a german shepherd, she's overwhelmed. Rascal and Tequila are good boys, they have a routine, they manage well, they sit on command, she keeps them in a crate a lot because she can't let them near her dog. They are housebroken and leash trained. It would be nice if they could be placed in a home together but they CAN be separated.

Gracie - Adopted

Name: Gracie
Sex: Female (not altered)
Breed: GSD Mix
Age: 9-10 weeks
Location: Philadelphia, PA

Vet/Medical Info: We cannot verify Gracie’s medical information.
Owner Info: A good samaritan took this little girl in yesterday to prevent her from being taken to a shelter by her owner. The GS is involved in rescue and has foster dogs as well as four dogs of her own. She is keeping Gracie in a play pen to ensure she doesn't get hurt by the adult dogs. She was not told Gracie was blind when she was basically dumped at her house. Gracie likes being held close to your body and feels secure when held in an embrace. The GS was told the puppy had had her first vaccination. Gracie is an adorable happy puppy, but the GS dogs are so big and they keep stepping on her. She seems healthy. She has a healing bite wound on her head, the lady that owned her said her adult dog bit the puppy and that’s why she was giving her up. The GS works 10+ hours a day during the week and Gracie will be all alone, she feels she will not cope with this well.

Bear - In Memory

Name: Bear
Sex: Male (not altered)

Breed: Labrador Retreiver
Age: 8-9 years
Location: Rock Hill, SC

Vet/Medical Info: Bear was vetted by the Laurens SC shelter vet and that is where his diagnosis was given. They don’t keep records of the rescue dogs so talking to them will be no help. Bear has not yet been seen by a vet since being with Donna.

Owner Info: Donna is part of a network of lab rescues working to save as many dogs as possible in the Greater Charlotte NC area. Last week, she was contacted about a beautiful chocolate lab at the Laurens SC shelter. They told her he was 5 yrs old and had one bad eye. She pulled him for a rescue in Indiana and found out that he is probably 8 yrs old and completely blind in one eye and has only moderate sight in the other (one eye is completely covered in cataracts and the other is moderately covered). He has some vision but not much. He is currently in a kennel, as they planned on holding him there till transport, not knowing at the time that he was so visually impaired. She is sure this is a frightening and confusing experience for him! Bear is NOT a good candidate for a traditional lab rescue. Their adopters are not looking for a special needs dog. They also do not have a foster available for him that can deal with his impairment. He is 95 lbs, has been fully vetted but still needs to be neutered. He is light heartworm positive. They would happily pay for his neuter and heartworm treatment (although they'd probably opt for the slow kill option if possible, due to his age) if we can help find him a foster and adoptive home. Bear is an outdoor dog with a fenced in yard, he is housebroken and leash trained. He has a wonderful temperament - very sweet with people and other dogs and is quite easy to handle despite his large size, he could do with losing a few pounds.

Wonder - Adopted

Name: Wonder
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: GSD
Age: 3 months
Location: Elloree, SC

Vet/Medical Info: Not neutered, vet said it can be done this early with bloodwork first. Puppy has had first set of puppy shots, about 12 weeks old now, will have one more set of puppy shots and then final shots in about three weeks, has not had rabies vaccine yet. Puppy is heartworm negative (dogs can't have heartworm until they are six months old). Dr. Mitchell cannot tell us a reason for blindness...eyes look good physically, he would recommend having Wondersee an opthomologist. No other relevant medical information.
Owner Info: DOB 3/5/2011. Wonder's owner and breeder has five dogs and is having to rehome some of them. Wonder has only been around other puppies and his Mom, not the other adult dogs in the house. He has also only ever been around his owner and her husband. He was born blind and is in good health. His parents are both very laid back dogs and Wonder is a very smart and loving boy.

Jersey - Staying With Owner

Name: Jersey
Sex: Female (altered)

Breed: Fox terrier Mix
Age: 12+ years
Location: Sonoma, CA

Vet/Medical Info: Jersey has not been to see vet since 1/2/08...is NOT up to date on any vaccine unless she went somewhere else. Three year rabies last given 6/20/06, DHLPP given 6/28/07. No heartworm test...she is spayed (was spayed 3/21/01 by another clinic but they do have verification). No other relevant medical info or reason for blindness.

Owner Info: Jersey was abandoned by her owner. She’s about 40 lbs and her current guardian was told that she’s a terrier/hound mix. She was abandoned by his neighbor who he let live temporarily at his house but could no longer care for the dog due to not being able to find housing. Jerseys guardian and his girlfriend work full time and 4 have cats that they have rescued – they cannot properly care for Jersey nor can they afford another pet. They do not want her to be euthanized. She is very sweet and loving towards people and is obviously very lonely. Jersey is an outdoor dog with a fenced in yard, she is housebroken and leash trained. She is good with all people and other dogs. She loves being inside but does not get along with cats so they must keep her outside. She has also adjusted to her blindness quite well and seems to do ok with it. She’s been blind for about 2 years now. They are fairly desperate and really need help.

Hope - Adopted

Name: Hope
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Cairn Terrier
Age: 4+ years
Location: Gastonia, NC

Vet/Medical Info: She is spayed and is current on all vaccines including rabies (6/19/2011). She's heartworm negative. No other relevant medical info noted and could not add anything about her blindness.

Owner Info: Hope's owner cannot keep up with her needs due to his work schedule and finances. Hope adapts well to new surroundings as long as she gets assurance, she has been taught to follow footsteps inside and outside to help navigate her way around. Hope has seen an Opthamologist, she has SARDS or a tumor. Hope is overweight and needs frequent access to outdoors for toileting. She sleeps indoors at night but is outside in a run during the day because of this. Hope loves to play ball and follows it by sound, not smell. She gets along great with her owners male GSD, female Lab, and male cat.

Dixie - In BDRA Foster Care

Name: Dixie
Sex: Female (not altered)
Breed: Chihuahua

Age: Estimated 5 years
Location: Springfield, TN
Vet/Medical Info: We do not have any medical history.
Owner Info: This little girl was a stray/abandoned dog. A GS has taken her in but feels they just aren't the best fit for her. The other small breed dogs in the house lose patience with her and snap at her for bumping into them. She requires being carried off their high deck and the GS is not able to climb the stairs well herself, let alone to take her to potty all day. The GS also works 40 hours a week so the little girl is left home with the other pets and she is always afraid she will get hurt. She appears to be blind, her eyes are glazed over. She is a very sweet and loving dog who deserves a second chance. The GS cannot provide the best home for her but knows in her heart that there is a loving home perfect for her and her disability.
