Radar - Adopted

Name: Radar
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: Belgian Shepherd
Age: 4 ½ months
Location: Checotah, OK

Vet/Medical Info: Radar saw the vet only one time, on 6/30/2011.  At that time he was severely malnourished, they said he's "lucky to be alive".  They treated for fleas and ticks, addressed his worms, and began daily vitamin supplements.  He could not have survived anesthesia then.  He is not neutered, they did no HW testing and gave no vaccines.  The notes say "appears to be blind", but they have no more info than that.

Owner Info: Radar currently resides at the Checotah Animal Shelter (no-kill shelter), he was found by a couple that were walking/visiting Lake Eufaula in Oklahoma. He was near death. The couple contacted the shelter and they took Radar and will NOT give up on him. He was unable to walk, eat or drink but they gave him fluid by syringe, hand fed him and helped him potty by carrying him out. All he could do was cry. They made sure to roll him often from side to side and prop him up to circulate his blood. A volunteer couple from Eufaula took Radar to their home for one on one attention and now Radar is walking, eating, playing and ready for a forever home and a lot of love. Radar's eyes are open, they believe that he can see shadows.

Pugsly - In Kentuckiana Pug Rescue Foster Care

Name: Pugsly
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Pug
Age: 9 years
Location: Jefferson, WI

Vet/Medical Info: Pugsly is neutered. Last heartworm test they have a record for was done in 2007, if he's had a test elsewhere, they don't know about it. Distemper was due 2/2/10, again, if done elsewhere, they don't know. Rabies is current and will be due 2/2/12. Confirmed that Puglsy had eye issues due to fighting, but could not give more info without speaking with the vet.

Owner Info: DOB 7/9/2002. Pugsly is caught up in a relationship split - his Dad doesn't have a home for him and his Mom works during the day and is gone 12-13 hours. He needs to find a new home, they adopted him in 2002. He is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house, he’s housebroken and will let you know when he wants to go out, he is also leash trained. One of their other dogs got into a fight with Pugsly and popped out both eyes during the fight, this is the cause of his blindness. The vet sewed both eyes shut for four weeks then removed the stitches. His eyes need cleaned every day as they get crusty and he has eye drops daily. Pugsly's Dad has contacted the Deforest, Wisc blind dog rescue, he's also on their adopt a pet website for dogs or pugs. He doesn't want him ending up in a shelter, he is a very loving boy.

Bernard

Name: Bernard
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: Saint Bernard
Age: 6 years
Location: Westmount, PQ

Vet/Medical Info: Bernard is not neutered and has been given no vaccines due to his skin condition - he had a bad skin infection but has been given an injection of antibiotics and is improving, will need to continue antibiotics. He has not been heartworm tested. He is boarding at the vet's currently as his owner is overseas, they wanted us to know he's very good with other dogs and cats. They take him out frequently and he goes for walks and is a very good boy. They had no other information, but said we can call anytime, they all like Bernard very much!

Owner Info: Bernard was taken out of a puppy mill two weeks ago, he was very sick when he came out – underweight with blood and skin infections. He is now much better but sadly blind. He was tied to a 12 inch chain inside a box for his whole life. His current owner has shown him how to be loved again and to trust, he now walks on a leash too. He likes kids, dogs, cats - he is just a big love and his new owner wishes he could keep him but he already has a blind dog and two other dogs. He has spent over $2000 so far on Bernard and desperately wants to find him a loving forever home where he can live out the rest of his days being spoilt and loved.

Toby - Adopted

Name: Toby
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: English Coonhound
Age: 8 months
Location: Lenoir City, TN

Vet/Medical Info: Toby is not neutered. Toby had three-year rabies vaccine on 7/14/11, they have no other record of vaccines. They did not do HW test and they have no other relevant medical information.

Owner Info: Toby's current owner got him to be a hunting dog, however his limited eyesight makes him unsuitable for this. He would make someone a great pet because he has a gentle temperament, however he is not the best around cats. He is only partially blind and would be great around other dogs or children. Has had rabies shot 07/2011, Hartz flea and tick and wormed. Previous owner said he had all of his 7 way shots (we have no record of this). Toby has seen family Vet after discovering his sight was not 100% during a hunting trip, vet said he was going blind. He adapts very well due to his other senses which help him compensate for his lack of sight. He can see at short distances within 20 yards, but vet is not sure of whether this will lessen or increase over time. He appears to have beginning stages of cataracts. Vision appears to be impaired at long distances, you can see the film inside the lenses as pointed out by the vet. He is a very active puppy, other than his vision he is in great health. Has a great nutrition program and is at goal weight, teeth, ears and coat are good. They take very good care of their dogs and tend to spoil them like children. It broke their hearts to discover Toby had vision problems. They play with him a lot and had started training him to hunt. He hears voices and turns his head to greet, but cannot determine where they are by sight when they leave the house. He is sweet and playful and would be a great pet for someone, especially if they had a fenced-in yard.

Tiny - In BDRA Foster Care

Name: Tiny
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: Standard Poodle
Age: 15 weeks
Location: Gravette, AR

Vet/Medical Info: Tiny was smaller than the other puppies in his litter, they were concerned about him. They referred owner to a specialist as they suspected a shunt, but it did not come back that way, he has cataracts. Owner does her own vaccines, vet said she has raised show dogs, so they have no records of any vaccines.  Tiny Dancer has not been heartworm tested because he's less than a year old, but he is on heartworm preventative.  He is not neutered.

Owner Info: DOB 4/7/2011.Tiny is a 15 week old puppy that has cataracts and needs surgery. His owners farm is in foreclosure and they do not know what is going to happen to them. They want their baby to be safe, loved and well cared for. Tiny is a fabulous little boy, smart, outgoing and so very loving. He needs a home quickly, they are desperate. He was born with cataracts, the eye specialist said they can be removed when he is 6 months old and he will be able to see again. He is an indoor dog with the run of the house, he’s more or less housebroken and leash trained. He knows ‘come’, has perfect recall, ‘sit’, ‘STOP’, ‘step’, ‘no’, ‘wait’, ‘give’ and ‘take’. He is crate trained and keeps his crate dry and clean all the time. He is a baby and still has an accident once in a while in the house. He’s great with people of all ages and loves other dogs, cats and small animals.

Henry - Adopted

Name: Henry
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: Beagle
Age: 8 years approx
Location: Almo, KY

Vet/Medical Info: Henry was first taken to vet on June 25th, he was a stray, only note in the chart was that she found him. He is not neutered, they did no vaccines and no heartworm testing. They gave him Drontal for worming and Terramycin eye ointment, and a collar.

Owner Info: Henry's current owner found him in their neighbourhood wandering around and took him in because she was afraid he could not defend himself. They think he may have been dumped. They have had him for just over three weeks and feel they cannot properly care for him, their other dog and two cats. Henry is very sweet but corners the cats and nips at them and accidentally hurt their dog when they were playing. They are not sure if he is just trying to figure the cats out or if he doesn't like them and is trying to hurt them. He had an eye infection when they found him and slept most of the day, but after meds it cleared up and he really warmed up. The vet said he is totally blind. He is very trusting and sits on their lap every chance he gets. He is very gentle with their two children, 3 and 6 years. He has never growled at anyone since being there. Henry is housebroken and leash trained. The pics show him the day after they found him with the eye infection.

Keller - Adopted

Name: Keller
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Brazillian Mastiff
Age: 5 years
Location: Ocean Springs, MS

Vet/Medical Info: The last time vet saw Keller was in 2008. At that visit, they gave him a one-year rabies (6/2/08), they did not give any other vaccines or do a heartworm test. He is neutered. They had no other information for us.

Owner Info: Keller's owner rescued him from an abusive home and has had him for one year, she is moving into an apartment in just over one weeks time and cannot keep him. She listed him on Craigslist and in the local paper 3 months ago, no luck. She also contacted all animal shelters nearby, but they all said they would euthanize him. Keller is blind and deaf, he has seen an Ophthamologist. His eyes are pink, he had laser surgery done at Mississippi State University and can see bright lights, but he is pretty much completely blind. Keller adapts well to new surroundings as long as he has a fence. His sense of smell is amazing and he finds his way around very quickly. He is the biggest love! He adores kids and people, loves to be petted. He is great with other dogs, cats and small animals. He would be perfect for a family with kids or an older couple because he does not jump on you, and is very slow and gentle.

Snoopy - Staying With Owner

Name: Snoopy
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Cocker Spaniel
Age: 17 years
Location: Los Angeles, CA

Vet/Medical Info: Snoopy is neutered, they gave one year rabies on 6/26/11. They could also tell us from Snoopy's shelter paperwork that he had bordatella and DHLPP on 6/18/2011, but could not say if they were one or three year vaccines, said they do three year vaccines in California for those. Snoopy has not been heartworm tested, they had no other relevant medical information.
Owner Info: Snoopy's current owner rescued him from a Lancaster shelter, his old owner was dumping him there because he is blind. The shelter said he is 17 years old. He has been checked out by a vet and is in good shape for a senior, loves to eat and go for walks. She can't keep him because she has a lot of dogs and cats and works long hours. He is a very sweet boy, when she first saw Snoopy it broke her heart and she knew she had to save him. He appears to be completely blind. He gets on very well with her other dogs and cats. He is an indoor dog with the run of the house, he’s housebroken and leash trained.

Mama - Adopted

Name: Mama
Sex: Female (not altered)
Breed: Cocker Spaniel
Age: Approximately 3 years
Location: Celina, OH

Vet/Medical Info: None available.

Owner Info: A good Samaritan that runs a grooming and boarding kennel and occasionally does some rescue work, has taken Mama in. Mamawas a breeder turn in, her Amish owner/breeder no longer wanted her. She had no name, they have been calling her Mama. She is a very quiet, shy girl, she just sits and lays around listening to everything. She eats well and is a good weight. The GS has given her DHPP shots but she needs her Rabies shot. They are not sure if she has cataracts or why she seems to be blind, her eyes are a lighter blue color. She needs a place to call home, someone with blind dog experience or someone to see what her blindness problem is. Mama only has one week to find a place to go or the GS will be forced to have her put to sleep. They are full to the brim with dogs and she has no room for boarders as her adopters are taking up all the room.

Henry - Adopted

Name: Henry
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Poodle/Bichon Mix
Age: 6 years approx
Location: Sacramento, CA

Vet/Medical Info: Henry is neutered and up to date on rabies, he's due for next rabies 6/27/14. They have no record of giving him any other vaccines. He is current on his heartworm testing and he is heartworm negative. They had no other relevant medical information.

Owner Info: Henry's owner has very unstable working hours and doesn't even have her own place to live because of it. She is couch surfing trying to save up for her own place and really can't care for her dog this way. Although he has adapted very well over the last year, she sees him becoming more depressed and withdrawn, she believes his blindness has gotten worse. If she doesn't find a home for him by August 1st she will have to take him to a shelter and fears they will just put him down. She got him from a shelter and does not want him to have to go back. Henry is possessive with toys and socks, he loves to find socks and place them in front of himself. He never chews them up, just hovers over them. He has become more possessive over the last 3 months or so, he is really stressed right now. He is not possessive with food. Henry has always adapted quickly and easily, but they have moved so much over the last few months he has become insecure and has snapped at small children recently. His eyes have become more cloudy over the last few months, his right eye was always the worst but his left eye is more cloudy now. He flinches his eyes a lot when you are near his face. Henry has been very healthy, he gets heartworm and flea control medication and is groomed regularly. He is an indoor dog with the run of the house, he’s housebroken and leash trained. He is good with adults, older children and other dogs. He is very sweet. She believes Henry can live a long good life with the right owner and wishes that owner could be her. He is a typical lap dog who just wants to sit and love you and be loved.

Happy Girl - In Foster Care With Rescue

Name: Happy Girl
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Bichon Mix
Age: 11 years
Location: Stamford, CT

Vet/Medical Info: Happy Girl is spayed, DOB 2/19/2000. On 2/16/2011 she had a dental done and had a small growth removed from inside her right ear. She was HW tested and is negative. She is obese. On 2/25/2011 she was seen as had some eye discharge and mild inflammation, her eyes were cleaned & bathed & she was given som ointment to apply 8 hourly. On this day she was given a 1 yr rabies vaccine, Bordetella, Leptospirosis and DA2PP boosters and interceptor. She has a 1/2 cm raised growth on right side of thorax and a small soft SQ mass at ventral sternum. On 3/9/2011 she was re examined, mild conjunctivitis bilaterally, eye medication to be continued. She has lost 3 pounds. She has a grade 2 systolic murmur.  Fecal exam, no parasites seen.

Owner Info: Happy Girl is in a foster home with Small Paws Rescue in Weirton, WV, she was rescued from Tulsa, OK. She looks like a Bichon mix, her hair is straight, but her tail has the curl and she has a pleasant personality. She LOVES to eat! She is overweight. She is housetrained and has had very few accidents in her foster home. She walks very well on a leash. She has cataracts, has limited sight and may be a little hard of hearing. She doesn’t play very much. She has snapped at her foster mom on two occasions when she was startled during the night when the foster mom accidentally stepped on her. She gets along fine with other dogs and likes to take rides. Happy would be a good pet for older adults. She is a sweet girl! Unfortunately knowing her history with snapping, Small Paws Rescue cannot place her due to liability issues. Most rescues will not take in an 11 year old dog who is visually impaired, especially one who may snap or bite. They cannot place her and the foster mom cannot keep her indefinitely. Our rescue is her only hope at this time.  If we can take her they will send her with a donation. Happy has been completely vetted, is up to date on her vaccinations and has had a dental. They can get her to us at any time.

It stated "corneal dystrophy" as his eye condition which the vet said needs confirmation by an opthamologist. He has a cloudy film over both eyes. While he is young, she wants him to get any help or training he needs. He is very healthy, a normal lab puppy, very playful.

Shadow - In Memory

Name: Shadow
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: English Setter
Age: 6-7 years
Location: Fishersville, VA

Vet/Medical Info: Shadow is a very sweet girl! She is spayed and UTD on Distemper, Bordatella, and Lepto until July 22 2011. She had her three year rabies on Feb. 27 2011, so will be due by Feb. 27 2014.  She was also tested in February for HW, and is negative, also negative for lyme and ehrlichia.  It's in the notes from February 2011 that she has a mammary tumor, but they have done no treatments.

Owner Info: Shadow's current owner took her in from a hunter who planned on shooting her because of her deteriorating sight. She is a field bred Setter. Her owner has rescued several dogs and always found them homes in the past. Shadow has been an impossible dog to place, she has been at their farm for 1 1/2 years, has been spayed, housebroken, vetted and trained. She is a wonderfully sweet dog, but cannot be a permanent rescue as she kills chickens and chases livestock (she can hear and smell them well!), they cannot trust her outside except on a leash. This seems cruel to her because they have a large farm and fenced farmyard where their other dogs can run and play. They want to find her a home where she can be the main focus and people have more time to devote to her. She has been advertised on Petfinder and crossposted on several other rescue sites. They have also taken her to Petsmart and the local parks to meet people. Four folks have tried her and due to various issues, returned her within the one week trial period I gave them for reasons varying from shedding to a growl. She has one real vice; she growls at other dogs and people when they startle her, especially when on her bed. She is NOT mean in any way. When she growls, she does NOT lunge or bite. She loves people and has never bitten or hurt anyone, even little children. She will growl once, and if you speak to her or pet her, she is fine. I believe this is completely due to her sight. She gets around well, can go up and down stairs very well. She really loves to meet people. Vets suspect she has PRA and say it is common in field bred Setters. She does have a tiny bit of sight or can see shadows in bright sunlight. Four months ago, their Vet found a lump on a mammary gland. It has not grown and is likely benign but this could also be a problem. She is otherwise very healthy. Shadow is a WONDERFUL dog. Like most setters, she is a gentle, calm dog in the house, she sleeps on her bed or on the rug and is happy. Outside, she loves to run and play, although she must be supervised because of her sight. She would do well with a fenced yard and someone who likes to walk or run every day. She loves people. She has a strong prey drive, even though she cannot see. She is not good with birds, small animals, or young livestock. She is okay with cats, although she has never been with a housecat. She is such a sweet dog.

Michael - Adopted

Name: Michael
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Chow Mix
Age: Unknown
Location: Limestone, TN

Vet/Medical Info: The lady that is caring for Michael is one of their best clients, she takes good care of her animals. Michael was neutered 5/25/11, he also received all vaccinations on that date. Rabies was a 1 year shot. He is Heartworm negative and on Heartworm prevention meds.

Owner Info: Michael was a stray that found his caregiver about six weeks ago. She has 10 other animals and can't keep him. She works two jobs and goes to school, time is very limited. Michael has been shifted around a lot because she can't keep him at her house, he always adjusts well. Michael has been to the vet once, the vet seemed to think he was blind in one eye and had some vision in the other, he thought he was born that way. When she realized Michael was visually impaired, she knew what would happen if she abandoned him to the shelter. She decided to get him neutered, his shots and his heartworm but then didn't know what to do with him. He already has a strike against him because of his blindness. Right now he is at a kennel, but she can't afford to keep him there much longer.

Gizmo - In Friends Of Homeless Animals Foster Care

Name: Gizmo
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Pug
Age: 10 years
Location: Merrimack, NH

Vet/Medical Info: Gizmo is neutered and UTD on rabies - he got his rabies in April 2011 so it will expire in 2014.  He was due for bordatella and distemper in 2009.  He is heartworm negative.  Currently, he has ringworm, conjunctivitis and an ear infection and is being treated.  He has food allergies and is on a prescription diet, Hills Ultra Z/D.  He does require baths a few times a week to help control his skin issues/itch.  He also requires daily eye drops.

Owner Info: DOB 8/21/2001. Gizmo's owner can no longer afford to care for him. Gizmo is completely blind and can no longer produce tears, he is given an eye lubricant daily. He is being treated for a skin condition at the moment. He has had ear and eye infections in the past, he has allergies and sometimes takes benadyle for the itch. He is bathed 3-4 times per week to aid in controlling his skin condition. He barks at the doorbell and gets nervous around the vacuum. He's a great dog. Owner taking Gizmo for vaccinations 7/7/2011.

Karli - Staying With Owner

Name: Karli
Sex: Male (altered)

Breed: Brittany Spaniel Setter Mix

Age: 5 years
Location: Ringwood, NJ

Vet/Medical Info: Karli was neutered on 5/17/11, he also tested negative for Heartworm on that date. Everything was done on 5/17/11 – including Rabies one year vaccination. It seems there is a new test they can give called Titer and according to that test the dog does not need the Distemper, Parvo, Adeno because the test shows that he had enough immunity. It has to be rechecked every year. He also had a fecal test and a vaccination against Lyme that is good for one year.

Owner Info: Karli's owner is 72 and has arthritis, he needs more exercise than she can give him. She got him a few weeks ago from a shelter where he would have been PTS. Karli walked into her house and learned it very quickly, learned the stairs very quickly and now runs down the stairs to greet her. His eyes don't appear to have pupils - it's like looking into a glass marble. He seems to focus on you when you talk to him, he seems to distinguish light and dark. He's very loving, gentle and sweet, intelligent, very patient and friendly. He responds very well to tender loving care. Does not respond well to sharp sounds. Beautiful white face, reddish nose, white with tan speckles. She is not giving him what he needs - he needs more than she can do. Karli has never been around kids since she has had him but she is certain with his disposition, he would be fine. Please note Karli is a large dog (see second photo for reference).

Shih Tzu (no name) - Adopted

Name: No name
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Shih Tzu
Age: Estimated 6 years
Location: Souderton, PA

Vet/Medical Info: She was a stray and very matted, they only groomed her. Medical history unknown.

Owner Info: This little girl was brought into a vet by police as a stray and no owner has claimed her. Her eyes are very cloudy and she seems to be blind in one eye and able to see a small amount in other. She follows sound of voice on leash when walking. Seems healthy and happy otherwise - had some allergy issues when arriving, but has since cleared up and skin is looking much better. She adapts well to new situations and the staff feel she would be a great fit for an older person looking for a companion, very friendly and sweet dog. Her time at the vet is limited so she needs to find a new home asap.

Lucy - Staying With Owner

Name: Lucy
Sex: Female (altered)

Breed: Miniature Dachshund

Age: 12 1/2 years
Location: Bloomington, IN

Vet/Medical Info: Lucy is spayed and had a 1 yr Rabies shot on 6/13/11, she also had a dental and had a few teeth removed. DOB 12/98. 5 way vaccination 6/29/2010, spayed and diabetic.

Owner Info: Lucy is a red dapple Dachshund and was rescued from a high kill shelter, she was dumped by her old owner because they could no longer afford her care. Lucy is a great dog but her new owner has over 20 dogs and 10 cats in her care, most of them special needs or senior. She has two special needs cats and they are very stressed out because Lucy chases after them tries to bite them (she doesn't mind an occasional chase but Lucy gets a bit too aggressive with them). If it weren't for this, her current owner would keep her. It took Lucy about 10 days to become really comfortable in her new surroundings, the fact that there are several dogs in the house which occasionally bump into each other made it harder for her. She does best with only 2-3 other dogs around her. Lucy developed diabetes probably about 3 months ago (perhaps longer, we don't know because the previous owner did not take her to the vet on a regular basis). When her new owner first met Lucy at the shelter mid April, she was still able to see. She has cataracts in both eyes and went blind due to diabetes. Lucy visited the vet and she had a cbc and a glucose curve done to regulate her on the insulin. She needs insulin (very very little) once a day. Her kidneys and liver are fine. She seems to have malabsorbtion syndrome as she does not put on weight no matter how much and what kind of food she is fed. She will soon be starting on supplements, i.e. enzymes for her which should help with this condition. The vet said she could have her eyes fixed but it would cost about $5,000. She is very spunky and sweet. Owner is taking her to vet next week for a glucose check, she will get her UTD on vaccinations then.

Breed: Akita
Age: Estimated 10 years
Location: Timonium, MD

Vet/Medical Info: No medical information available.
Owner Info: This guy was found wandering in the street. He is so sweet and deserves a chance to live out his life with some quality and dignity.
