Finley - Adopted

Name: Finley
Sex: Male (altered per owner)
Breed: Doxy/Chi Mix
Age: Approximately 9 months
Location: Lithia, FL

Vet Info: Unable to be verified.

Owner Info: Several months ago my rescue had pulled a blind small dog puppy out of a kill shelter.  I am working with him but he apparently went through some pretty rough times and is somewhat petrified to be lifted.  Finley needs someone who can devote a lot more time to him and his special needs than I can offer him as I foster way too many dogs to have the extra time.  He is a sweet boy.  I am not used to working with a blind dog so he and I work together. He loves me to scratch his neck/ears/head.  Finley is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house, and is not housebroken or leash trained.  He has never shown aggression.

From his Petfinder page: Poor little guy is blind. His original owners ignored him and he knew nothing about physical contact but is responding well to love and patience.  Finley is so sweet and knows his name and loves to hear your voice.  He goes potty on the paper and he knows where his food and water are and has no trouble keeping a full tummy and quenching his thirst.

Stevie Wonder - In Dalmation Rescue, NJ Foster Care

Name: Stevie Wonder
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Bulldog/Dalmation Mix
Age: 3 years approx
Location: Kearny, NJ

Vet/Medical Info: Stevie is neutered. He received distemper 6/11 but no other shots. He received HW antibody but nothing else. Stevie had his rabies vaccination through the county on 1/29/2011, it expires 1/29/2014.

Owner Info: Stevie's owner rescued him about 1 1/2 years ago. She has her young pregnant daughter and her boyfriend moving in with her as her living arrangements are unstable. She already has a high energy Dalmation that has been with her for 6 years and two cats. There is hardly enough room for her, the baby and the baby's father. She doesn't know how long any of them will be there, but with a baby present, she does not think it is safe to have all the animals. Stevie is neutered, up to date on shots (but not Bordella). He is a wonderful dog. He needs to be in a home where folks are home a lot and can love him. If it were just her and the dogs, she could handle Stevie. Stevie was aggressive towards her older dog when he first went to live there but that was usually when the older dog would egg him on. Stevie had seperation anxiety when they brought him home, they tried to crate him and confine him to the kitchen. He would try to get out. Stevie had seperation anxiety when they brought him home, tried to crate him and confine him to the kitchen. He would try to get out. She had a lady come in and walk him every day for several months. He is alot better now, and her daughter is there most of the time. Stevie had heartworm before he came to them but was treated. She thinks Stevie has detached retinas. He is a very loving boy who gets on well wit other dogs and cats.

Tasha - In BDRA Foster Care

Name: Tasha
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Siberian Husky
Age: 6 years
Location: York, PA

Vet/Medical Info: Tasha is UTD on rabies, it's due 6/25/2012, but distemper/lyme was due June, 2011.  She is spayed.  Last HW test was 6/25/2010 and was negative, no other relevant medical info.

Owner Info: Tasha's owners are being forced to move from their home and will not be able to take Tasha with them. This is a difficult decision, but one that is necessary. They have posted her on a couple of sites and she was posted in an adds section under her daughters work and a friends in two separate locations. They contacted shelters that either would not accept her because of her blindness or admitted they would put her down. They have also asked other dog lovers if they knew anyone who may be interested in giving her a good home. They want to make sure she is placed with loving individuals, a single person or a family that will love her as much as they do. One of their contacts posted this in her dog loving circle, resulting in another concerned dog lover giving Tasha's owners BDRA's information. They originally acquired Tasha from an email post because she was passed around a family not able to keep her and if someone didn't step in, they were going to euthanize her. Tasha can be very stubborn (a Sibe stubborn, no never lol) but knows sit, speak and when she wants to cooperate, down. Typically she doesn't like to perform her known commands without a treat. They have had Tasha with their family for about a year and a half. She is difficult to get in vehicles because of her vision loss and size, but acclimated amazingly. For the first week they kept Tasha on a short leash so they could help her learn the layout of the house. They live in a house with narrow hallways and skinny doorways into rooms and she learned the rooms in a few days. After a month Tasha learned the number of steps to go outside and use the bathroom, and where to turn to get into the living room or desired area. She doesn't go on any other floor besides the first because of the amount of steps, but is able to get anywhere she wants to be. When distressed or confused she will occasionally walk into things, but she readjusts and moves on. She truly amazes them with how she gets around. Tasha seems to have no vision in either of her eyes but adjusts to new surroundings very quickly. She was this way when they adopted her and they are not sure what happened to make her this way. The veterinary opthamologist in their area is at the emergency clinic and was too expensive for them to take Tasha there. Tasha is in good health, but besides her eye condition she loves to drink water. If provided with a big bowl she will drink it dry. Sometimes Tasha is reminded she is 'done' with water, and she'll then go lay down. When they first acquired her she was tested for diabetes because of the amount she drinks but the results came back negative. The vet concluded she has a condition that is not uncommon. Tasha's brain doesn't tell her to stop drinking, therefore always having a full bladder and needing to be let out multiple times a day. He told them there is a medicine you can put in their water, but since it was over $100, they just dealt with her having to pee often. This does result in an occasional accident. Every one that she has had has been right by the back door, it appears that she holds it as long as possible, but sometimes if they have been gone for an extended period of time she has no choice. They do try and monitor the amount of water she takes in. Tasha is a loving girl, she gets along well with both children and other animals. She loves to be walked and once in a while does try to play, but her blindness limits her abilities. She avoids stairs as much as possible, but will go up and down a few at a time in order to get where she needs to go. She loves attention. She will sit at your feet for long periods of time as long as you are petting her, then she will find a place near by to lay so she is still near her chosen one. She truly is a great dog perfect for a family that needs a big teddy bear to hug. She will try her hardest to never disappoint you. If you have a heart and perhaps a bone, Tasha is your best friend.

Ray - Adopted

Name: Ray
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: Mixed Breed
Age: 10-12 weeks
Location: Daingerfield, TX

Vet/Medical Info: Ray received the first round of HPPVC 10/20 and the second 11/10. He has an appointment on 12/1 for his final puppy vaccination. Too young for HW test, rabies shot or neutering.

Owner Info: Ray was taken in by a caring lady as a stray puppy a few weeks ago, he was estimated to be 4-6 weeks old at the time. He was one in a litter of 11 that her daughter discovered and had fed for a couple of weeks. She has found homes for all of the puppies except for this little blind one. They love him already but cannot keep him. Her husband's job requires travel and she usually travels with him so is away from home for long periods of time several times a year, sometimes out of the country. She took the puppy in hopes of finding someone out there, who will love him and give him a good home, with the time and attention he needs. He is playful and happy. He seems to be learning very quickly how to get around. He has already had his first two puppy shots and has an appointment at vet for the third one. It breaks her heart that she can't keep him permanently, she is willing to keep him and care for him temporarily until a good home can be found. If he doesn't find a home he will have to go to a shelter. He is mostly white with some multi-color brown/tan splotches. She can only hope that we will help her help this little guy, she doesn't know where to begin. He seems to be a very happy normal puppy, other than the fact that he can't see. He seems to be adjusting and learning very fast. She would love for him to be able to learn and adjust to his new home more sooner than later. She is willing to travel to deliver him to his new home. He has been wormed and was given a flea/heartworm/ear mite preventative. He doesn't have big feet so she would guess he might be a small-medium size dog. Ray weighed 5.2lbs when he got his first vaccination on October 20 and as of November 15 he is 10 pounds and turning into a very handsome little boy. He walks good on a leash now with a harness.  He is a spoiled rotten house dog, he sleeps in the bed with their daughter.  He is housebroken, they have been able to leave the door open for him most of the time and he goes out and comes in as he pleases.  He has free run of the house and knows his way around the house and yard.  He gets along well with other dogs.  He is all puppy and likes chewing! Ray does appear to be able to see light and dark.  If there is light shining on him he can see the shadow of someone who walks in between him and the light source.  Also, if he is in a dark room and a light is turned on he instantly looks up toward the light.

Lucy - Adopted

Name: Lucy
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Poodle Mix
Age: Estimated 14 years
Location: Cape Coral, FL

Vet/Medical Info: Microchip number 070126045. On 7/13/2011 Lucy was given bordatella and DHPP vaccinations and frontline. On 7/19/2011 she had a fecal float done, HW test (negative) and was dewormed. She also received a one year rabies shot. Lucy has a ventral abdominal scar which indicates she is spayed. When examined on 7/13/2011 it was noted she was lethargic, had severe peridontis, a heart murmur, small mass on right flank, bilateral ocular opacity, flea and tick infestation, lumbar alopecia (suspect FAD). Further evaluations were recommended.

Owner Info: Lucy's current owner was going to be rescuing another senior from MDAS (high kill shelter) but when she saw Lucy she knew she could not leave knowing that Lucy's time was up and she would be left to die there, all alone and confused. Her heart told her to adopt Lucy, and when they brought her out she knew she'd done the right thing. Lucy is a blind and deaf senior. Saving Lucy was the right thing, but she was so overwhelmed with her own pets and now 3 foster dogs. The money and stresses of caring for all of them soon became too much, not to mention she has the costs of fighting a custody battle for her granddaughter. She also has MS but has been in remission for the past 10 years, but recently has started feeling herself coming out of remission. She is fatigued and her mind makes her unable to understand and forget things, she need to keep fighting for her granddaughter and just can't be responsible for Lucy...she deserves better. She started Lucy on her save journey..it's time for someone else to give her the happy ending, and her forever home. She never realized how amazing a blind/deaf dog could be until Lucy came into her life, she will be missed. It's time to let go of Lucy and allow her to bond with someone that can give her everything she needs for the rest of her life. Lucy is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house, she is not housebroken or leash trained. She is good with people of all ages, dogs and other small animals. She is deaf, so she blows on her before she picks her up so she isn't afraid.  If she barks it can mean she is hungry and when she stands by her right side, she will start sniffing for her food bowl to her left. She always licks her food before she tries to eat it and she always stands on the right side of her food and turns her head to the left. She will also bark if she is in a small room and needs to potty (BM'S) and can't find the papers. Someone will need to work on that with her, but she may have been trained and her new owner just doesn't know how to respond to her. If she is left to roam the house (she loves to roam around) she will potty without barking first. If she smells the papers she has down for the other little dog Lucy will use it (but not always in a big area).  She will also try to eat out of the other dogs food bowls if she discovers them.  She is very capable of finding food and water bowls in a large area. If she steps down and goes out onto the porch, she will not step up to come back in, she will keep circling outside until she is picked up and carried back in. She also will not step over the threshold of a crate, she will circle around and never leave the crate unless she is lifted out (you do not have to close the door to a crate if you were to use one), she is NOT happy being kept in a crate or small room. She loves the freedom to go in and out of their bathroom. She comes out and roams then gets tired and goes back into the bathroom to sleep on a fuzzy rug that she loves. She walks into the other dogs and sometimes they snap at her and hurt her. However, Lucy seems to like having the other dogs near her, she will gently sniff them. She would NOT recommend cats around Lucy as she does walk into animals and a cat may swat with their paws and scratch her or cause injuries to her eyes or nose.  Lucy cannot defend herself and easily becomes confused, she doesn't know which way to turn to get out of the way.  She jumps and tries to get out of the way of people or children running or walking near or past her. She fears she will be stepped on or hurt and it is obvious she had been abused. She doesn't seem to trust anyone picking her up unless you blow on her first. If you don't blow on her, she will suddenly turn her head toward you but her owner thinks it's because she doesn't know who it is or why she is being picked up. She never even attempts to growl or snap. She just seems very fearful, but never shows any signs of aggression. She has untreated severe peridontitis, and requires soft foods. Lucy is estimated to be 14 years of age but could be younger.

Mugsy - Adopted

Name: Mugsy
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Shih Tzu
Age: 10 years
Location: Tega Cay, SC

Vet/Medical Info: Mugsy is currently up to date with all vaccinations. He will be due for Rabies and Distemper in December and the others in Feb. 2012. He tested negative for heartworm and is on heartworm prevention medicine. He is neutered and suffers from dry eye and needs drops 2-3 times a day. He is a very well cared for dog.

Owner Info: Mugsy's elderly owners can no longer take care of him, his 83 year old Dad has Parkinsons Disease and his 81 year old Mom just had a fall and broke both of her arms. They will be unable to walk him in the winter weather and their family has fears of them falling in the ice and snow. They originally got Mugsy from a neighbor's litter. Although Mugsy has not shown any aggression, he does not do well with small children that get in his face or bother him. Mugsy needs a home that's quiet as he sleeps most of the day. He is walked, he is not in a fenced yard. Mugsy is an indoor dog with the run of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained. He is good with people and older children (teenagers up) and he is good with other dogs. Please help us place this dog rather than the other alternative. Thank you for any help you can provide.
