Cooper - Adopted

Name: Cooper
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Shi-Poo
Age: 6 ½ years
Location: Tipp City, OH

Vet/Medical Info: Cooper had a complete physical 11/2012. He is neutered and heartworm negative. He is due for Rabies 10/7/12, Bordetello 11/29/12, Distemper 10/28/13 and the lepto/parvo 11/2012. He has cataracts.

Owner Info: DOB 7/15/2007. Cooper's owner needs to find a new home for him due to personal circumstances. Cooper has been an excellent dog, friendly, laid back, so easy to love. Circumstances have arrived that make it necessary for her to find him a new and loving home. Cooper is essentially blind due to bilateral cataracts, his first one formed at 10 months old followed by the other eye at one year of age. Surgery is probably a viable remedy to restore his sight but she just cannot afford the cost involved unfortunately and that makes it all the more horrible to know that he could see if it weren't for money issues. He is up to date on all vaccines and has seen his vet regularly. He is large for his breed, his mom and dad were 7 lbs and 13 lbs and Cooper weighs in at 37 lbs. The picture is before his eyes clouded but he still looks adorable. Cooper is an indoor dog with the run of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained. He is good with people and children of all ages, other dogs, cats and small animals. Cooper does very well with his visual impairment and fly’s up and down their stairs incredibly well. Other than his vision he is healthy as a horse as they say. He has had some problem with flea bite allergy but is under control and she keeps him on Comfortis year round now and sprays the yard area where he goes potty. Cooper is a warm, loving, easy going boy and will make someone a very special companion. Cooper's current owner is happy to continue caring for him until we can find him a permanent home.

Alvin - In Poet's Vision Aussie Rescue Foster Care, Canada

Name: Alvin
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: Aussie Mix
Age: 2 ½ months
Location: Bethel Park, PA

Vet/Medical Info: In January 2012 Alvin received a fecal test and a Parvo test. He did not test positive for Parvo, his sibling did so they treated Alvin also. Nothing else has been done.

Owner Info: DOB 11/13/2011. Alvin's owner runs a very small dog rescue in Bethel Park, PA. She rescued an emaciated female dog from a high kill shelter in WV. After feeding her they realized she was starting to get a belly, took her back to the vet and yes she was pregnant! Six days later she delivered (huge surprise). They have a partially blind/deaf little Aussie mix who is 11 weeks old and they are not "savvy" enough to know how to deal with this handicap. She feels he would be better off in a rescue that knows how to help him. Alvin seems to be able to see shadows and is light sensitive. He is an indoor dog with the run of the house, he is not yet housebroken. He is an outgoing puppy who likes people and children of all ages and other dogs. Alvin is a great puppy, but his owner doesn't feel she has the skill level to take care of him correctly and she's worried that the more she waits, the worse he will get. Also because she runs a rescue, there are always other dogs around, he loves everyone but some of the older dogs don't understand him and she's scared he might get hurt. They vaccinate the dogs themselves (because they are a rescue group and need to be able to vaccinate as soon as they rescue a dog). Alvin is current on his shots, he had his first one on 1/9/2012 and his second on 1/26/2012.

Trevor - Staying With Owner

Name: Trevor
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Shih Tzu
Age: 7 ½ years
Location: Atlanta, GA

Vet/Medical Info: Trevor's current vet recently passed away so we have been unable to get recent records. We did contact his previous vet who was able to tell us he was neutered, but not by them. They last saw him in 2009. At that time he tested negative for heartworm.

Owner Info: DOB 8/22/2004. Trevor's current owner rescued him four years ago from a puppy mill. She was able to take care of him at that time, but lost her job. With her current job she is no longer able to provide the care that he needs. She works very long hours now and he needs more care than she can provide. She has had to move into an affordable apartment and it has carpet, Trevor has accidents and the landlord will not agree to let her keep him, she is also no longer able to afford the medical care that he needs. He has dry eye syndrome. He only requires drops at this point, but the vet says that it will worsen over time. He is an indoor dog who is crated, he is not housebroken but is leash trained. He is an outgoing boy who is good with women, teenagers, other dogs and small animals. Trevor can be a little aggressive around food, he will growl at other animals. He adapts well to new situations if he has time and attention. She has worked extensively with him on house training, he is fine if someone is able to take him out about every 5-6 hours. He is not able to hold it in the crate longer than that. He has a low IQ due to being neglected so he needs someone who is patient and kind. He responds very well to positive reinforcement and treats. He also has terrible storm anxiety. He has the sweetest personality and is very loving. He is a lap dog and wants to be with you wherever you are. He sleeps in his bed next to his owners and is very submissive. This is very difficult as Trevor is very much loved but they are no longer able to meet his needs and it is now unfair to him.

Yoda - Adopted

Name: Yoda
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Japanese Chin
Age: 8 years approximately
Location: Westmont, NJ

Vet/Medical Info: Yoda is neutered and his rabies is good until 5/3/13. All other vaccinations are due now. When last tested he was heartworm negative.

Owner Info: Yoda is a victim of divorce, his owner is moving at the end of January and she can't have pets where she is going, it is a hardship situation. Yoda has to be placed before she moves. They rescued Yoda when he was about one, not really an organized rescue, it was from a girl who took on fosters. Yoda is an indoor dog with the run of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained. He is an outgoing boy, great with people and children of all ages and good with female dogs and cats. He tends to get in other male dogs faces and doesn't seem to realise his size. Yoda just recently went blind in both eyes, not sure of reason, just happened in the past few months. He needs some dental work done as his teeth are not great and he has a hernia from where he was neutered, but vet said it was nothing threatening, just kind of pokes out. He's very sweet and he is a lap dog - cuddly - loves to be in your arms!

Teddy - Adopted

Name: Teddy
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: Terrier Mix
Age: 1-2 years (estimated)
Location: North Fort Myers, FL

Vet/Medical Info: Teddy was heartworm tested on 12/27/2011 and was negative, he was also given flea treatment and bordatella and DHPP vaccinations. Teddy appears to be blind, he is hypermetric which is a sign of a neurologic abnormality. Potential diagnoses range from congenital anomaly to infection to cancer. He was bought in to be neutered on 1/5/2012 but he crashed under the anesthesia shortly after being intubated, he was stimulated and given medication and recovered.  Teddy had a negative fecal test on 1/5/2012 and they noted he had mild tartar. He was given a 1 yr rabies shot on this date also.

Owner Info: Teddy's current owner pulled him from Orange County Animal Services in Orlando FL because he was out of time and was to be euthanized. She is well equipped to foster and rehome most dogs but since Teddy is blind feels that a specialty rescue would be best able to find an experienced, appropriate forever home for him. She has only had him for one week now and will be putting him on Petfinder and may take him on adoption days to Petsmart. She only wants Teddy posted to our members and on our website, no crossposting or networking. He is safe with her in the meantime. Teddy came into the shelter as a stray. Teddy is microchipped. He is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house, he is housebroken but not yet leash trained. She has been working with him on 'come' and he is doing pretty well with it. He is good with women and other dogs. His eyes appear normal but he seems completely unable to see anything including movement. He adjusted very well to his new surroundings, within 48 hours he could rapidly go from his crate through the hall, around corner into kitchen and out the back door without being lead. He can navigate the back yard and locate the back door to return to the house. He already knows where water bowl is placed. His owner is amazed at how well he has done.

Howie - In BDRA Foster Care

Name: Howie
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: Border Collie Mix
Age: 6 weeks
Location: Bradyville, TN

Vet/Medical Info: Howie is too young to be tested for HW or to be neutered. He was treated for parasite infestation and given his basic shots. He has some sort of brain injury. If he was born that way he may inprove but if it is due to trauma he will not likely get any better, not enough is known about the dog to say.

Owner Info: Howie was found him in the middle of the highway on 1/15/2012, he was not moving - the people took him to the vet. Howie is blind, the lady that is caring for him does not have a job and wants this little guy to be taken care of. It is suspected Howie may be blind due to head trauma. Not too much is known about this little guy. He eats very well, he is not really stable on his feet. Seems to have some hearing, but not very much. Vet thinks perhaps he has been hit by a car. He has been wormed and had 1st round of vaccinations. He is currently on antibiotics and a steroid which he will finish in 5 days. Howie is currently an outdoor dog in an open space, no fenced in yard. He is not housebroken or leash trained (as most six week old puppies aren't). Howie is good with other small animals.

Rudy

Name: Rudy
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: Hound/Black Labrador Mix
Age: 8 years
Location: Knoxville, TN

Vet/Medical Info: Rudy is 27 lbs. The info owner gave is correct including the slight heart murmur. She has an apt for 2/3 for booster shots but as yet has not scheduled the HW treatment. He is not neutered.

Owner Info: Rudy's current owner adopted him out of a local kill shelter on 1/13/2012 to save his life, hoping to find him a good home. Rudy is an indoor dog with the run of the house, he is not housebroken but is leash trained. He was an outside dog before his owner surrendered him to the shelter, they are working on his training. Rudy can be a little nervous, he is good with adults and other dogs. He does growl a little bit if another dog gets near him when he is eating, but he hasn't shown aggression. He was very nervous the first 24 hrs they had him, but settled down quickly. He is not timid about exploring his surroundings. Rudy is completely blind, cause unknown but it is not due to cataracts. He has a mild heart murmur (I-II) possibly due to anemia from flea infestation and has slightly limited range of motion in right hip. He will be starting treatment for HW in the next few days, they are paying for it. They also plan to have Rudy neutered but the neutering/dental had to be delayed because of the HW treatment. He deserves the best.

Tanja - In Little Paws, Big Hearts Peke Rescue Foster Care

Name: Tanja
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Pekingese
Age: Approximately 7 years
Location: Charlotte, NC

Vet/Medical Info: Tanja was last seen in Dec. of 2008 so she needs all vaccinations. She is spayed and was never tested there for heartworm because they said it is rarely seen in that part of the US and so they don't test on a regular basis.

Owner Info: Tanja's owner lost her job early this year and due to rough financial times, they are struggling to get back on their feet with their two children. She would like to provide Tanja a home where she will receive more attention and love. Tanja was rescued from a puppy mill. Tanja has never shown aggression but she does growl while eating, possibly because she is blind and does not know what sounds are around her. At two and half years old she lost both of her eyes, they fell out one at a time but were both unsalvageable, she had both of them completely removed. They have moved house three times since she lost her vision and she has always adapted very easily to new surroundings. She is an inside dog, confined to one area of the house. She is housebroken but not leash trained. She is great with people and children of all ages, other dogs, cats and small animals. Tanja is the happiest dog her owner has ever seen, even after losing her sight her tail wags all the time and she's always looking to play.

Scooter - Adopted

Name: Scooter
Sex: Male (possibly not altered)
Breed: Black Labrador Mix (possibly Rottweiler)
Age: 8 years approximately
Location: Carlisle, PA

Vet/Medical Info: We have been unable to verify medical information for Scooter, family is not sure which vet he has been taken to.

Owner Info: Scooter's owner recently passed away and family members are now trying to find a new home for him. He had been with his owner since he was a puppy. Scooter is microchipped, he's an indoor dog with the run of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained. Scooter is a shy boy, he is good with adults but hasn't really been around many children. He is good with cats and small animals. Once he gets to know someone he is a very loving dog. He has white eyes, the family think his visual impairment may be because of cataracts. Scooter and his owner were best friends and Scooter misses him very much, they went everywhere with together. Scooter is still in the home by himself, they live an hour away and go every day to feed him and check the water, get him out, etc.  The landlord has given them some time to find Scooter a home but they only have until the end of next week. They have called everyone, many rescues, have been calling people since owner passed away on 12/22, no luck. His family would love to find Scooter a new home, he's loveable and would love a new place to live.

Boomer - Staying With Owner

Name: Boomer
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Walker Coonhound
Age: Unknown
Location: West Salem, OH

Vet/Medical Info: Boomer saw the vet 12/9/2011 and was dewormed. He has limited vision, his left eye doesn't constrict but the retinas are normal. Boomer was neutered on 1/16/12. At the same time he was tested for heartworm and given a distemper and rabies vaccination. The rabies was a 1 year shot and heartworm was negative.

Owner Info: Boomer was a stray that came into his current owners yard. He was very thin and had worms, they fed him and eventually brought him into the house. He is a good dog but they have one rescue and two large strays that they have kept already so they cannot keep him. They put posters in the local shelters and pet stores hoping an owner would call, two local rescue groups have been contacted to try to place him also. Boomer has been recently housebroken, he's doing really well and seems to walk well on a leash. It is hard to work on other commands with all the other dogs around, but they think he can learn if someone works with him. Boomer is good with people of all ages and good with other dogs. He has no aggression but is very intent on food - he grabs and attacks food even after being fed regularly for about a month now. This may take longer to overcome. They had a houseful of company over the holidays, furniture was moved, people milling around and he did well with all the confusion. He does not like car rides though. He has started gaining some weight and muscle since his pictures were taken when they first got him. His coat has gotten softer and his general health seems good except he drinks a lot of water. Boomer has been checked by a vet, they said his pupils are dilated and will not constrict even in direct light. Feels he has some vision just not sure how much. Boomer is being taken back to the vet this week to get neutered, vaccinated and heartworm tested. They are willing to keep Boomer until he can be placed in a good home. He is very friendly and now loves attention. Boomer has figured out the pet door and has not tried to run away even when he got out of the fenced yard.

Lucy - In Memory

Name: Lucy
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Blue Heeler
Age: 5 years
Location: Carriere, MS

Vet/Medical Info: Lucy is a wonderful dog. She is on Phenobarbital and Potassium Bromide for seizures. On 1/25/2011 she was given a one year rabies vaccination as well as bordatella, DA2PLCPV and a heartworm test which was negative. She also had a fecal float done and had a thorough annual wellness examination. On 2/9/2011 she presented with staph pyoderma and was given cyphalexin and derma vet ointment. On 4/25/2011 she was given heartguard 1 year tablets. On 9/16 she presented with discospondylitis and was given a metacam injection and previcox medication. She is currently on phenobarbital, potassium bromide and previcox for her arthritis at a cost of $120 per month.

Owner Info: Lucy is an incredible dog, very sweet. She's almost completely blind, she has epilepsy and she has arthritis in her back as well. The seizures are very well controlled on the medication, she'd only have a seizure if she were put under a large amount of stress or frightened badly, an example being another dog jumping on her and snarling. Because of the medicines she takes that keep her going, we're trying to find her a new loving home because we can't afford $120 per month in doggie pills. We love her very, very much. We want to know she'll be somewhere where she'll be happy.

Hope - Adopted

Name: Hope
Sex: Female (not altered)
Breed: Mixed Breed
Age: 2-3 years
Location: Fort Gibson, OK

Vet/Medical Info: We have been unable to verify any medical information, Hope’s owner took her to two vets to get her eyes checked, they were courtesy visits so would not have been recorded.

Owner Info: Hope's owner adopted her to keep her from being euthanized at a high kill shelter, with full intentions of finding her a new home afterwards. That was four months ago. Hope is blind and deaf (she can hear high pitches and loud noises). The only time she shows aggression with other dogs is if they are in or near her fence. Never shown aggression towards people. She is a very loving dog, can be hyper at times. Hope is an outdoor dog with a fenced in yard, she is housebroken and leash trained. She has never had anyone work with her before so she doesn't know any commands. She is an outgoing girl, good with people and older children, other dogs and cats.

Elvis - Staying With Owner

Name: Elvis
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Yellow Labrador
Age: 7 ½ years
Location: Annapolis, MD

Vet/Medical Info: Elvis is in good health. His next round of vaccinations are due 7/25/12, rabies is not due until 10/2/14. HW was negative. He is on thyroid meds and is neutered.

Owner Info: DOB March 18 2004. Elvis got in a dominance fight with his owners wife’s 15 year old dog. The other dogs leg was broken severely and the vet felt it was likely he would not survive surgery because of his age and because the dog was struggling to get around and cope with everyday life before the fight. The owners opted to have the dog put down. The wife said Elvis has to go, he is currently living at his owners office. Elvis has nowhere to go and the only other option is to put him down. Elvis's aggression was dominance but he was not the dominant male, the other dog, a 16 year old American Eskimo was the dominant male of the house even though he was one third Elvis’s size. Elvis liked Dakota and they always got on well. Elvis has cataracts and seems to have had vision problems from when he was a puppy. He always got scared and started shaking when around other dogs, other than the American Eskimo he lived with. His owner often placed a soft muzzle on him when around other dogs. Elvis has never gone after any dogs, just defends his space as he is very nervous when other dogs come close. Elvis is an inside dog confined to one area of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained. Elvis is a smart boy, he has had formal obedience training and knows commands such as come, sit, down, stay, fetch, mark, stop and thank you. He loves to swim, play catch and fetch. He knows all of his commands and does them strongly. He is good with people of all ages and good with cats. This is the last hope for Elvis, he is a good boy – just doesn’t like to be around other dogs. He would be great as an only dog, with a family that would play with him and love him.
