Helen - In Foster Care

Name: Helen
Sex: Female (spay not verified although owner believes she is spayed)
Age: 9+ years
Breed: Schnauzer/Poodle
Location: Louisville, KY

Vet Info: Helen weighs 30 pounds.  It is unknown if Helen is up to date on vaccines but if Helen has rescue/adoption, her owner will have her vaccinated.  It is unknown if Helen is spayed.

Owner Info: Helen's caregiver took Helen from a local shelter when she took 4 other dogs, as Helen would have been pts. The other 4 have been placed with local rescues. Helen is still in need of a rescue/adopter or foster home. Helen has limited vision and is 90% deaf...She can see about 15 ft. in front of her in strong daylight but after that, it's questionable. She is about 30lbs and 9 + years old. Somebody had her shaved approximately 8 to 10 weeks ago, but Helen's caregiver has searched the local paper and contacted groomers in the area where Helen was picked up, with no luck.  Helen is an outdoor dog with a fenced yard, she is housebroken and leash trained.  She also has access to her caregiver's garage.  Her caregiver's other dogs are too fast for her, and one of bigger dogs doesn't like Helen.  Helen has never bitten or snapped, and has never shown any aggression.  Her caregiver notes that sudden movements close to her face startle her.  Her teeth are dirty BUT not rotting or absessed.  She believes Helen's eye issues are from cataracts.

Mello - In Memory

Name: Mello
Age: Senior
Breed: Maltese
Sex: Female (altered per owner, not verified)
Location: Charlotte, NC

From her Craig's List posting: Marshmello is a very sweet quiet Maltese who is very calm and rather old. I don't have the heart to put her down because she's such a darling animal. Mello, as we call her, is also going blind and suffers with arthritis. I am unable to continue to give her the care she needs because I started working and don't like leaving her alone. I would like her to have a loving home, where she can relax and receive the love she deserves. She is a perfect lap dog. Free to a good home. We love her and again I can't fathom her being put down. Serious inquires only please.

Precious and Shadow - Staying With Owner

Names: Precious and Shadow
Sex: Precious female (not altered) and Shadow male (not altered)
Breed: Precious - Chihuahua/Poodle/Dachshund , Shadow - Long-haired chihuahua
Ages: Both are about three years old
Location: Patterson, CA

Vet Info: The vet has no records at all on Precious.  The vet said that Shadow was in one time in 2011 for a bordetella, microchip, and a distemper shot but has not been back in again.  Precious weighs about 2 pounds and Shadow weighs about 3 pounds.

Owner Info: The owner of these two dogs may be moving and is going through a lot so would like to rehome these two dogs.  She would love for them to be adopted together. They are outside dogs and are not housebroken but do like to come inside.  They are leash trained.  They have never bitten or snapped at anyone and have never shown any aggression.  Together they weigh about 5 pounds, so they are very small.  Precious is a female (not spayed) and Shadow is a male (not neutered). These dogs get along with everyone and other dogs and cats.  They have good temperaments and "love to be loved."  The owner describes them as "very healthy."

Update 2/23/2013: We have recently heard from the owner of Precious and Shadow.  She is more desperate for help in getting her dogs rehomed. She now says that the dogs can be separated (originally she had said that she wanted the dogs adopted together only).  Precious is blind and Shadow is not.

Age: 11 years
Location: Delhi, NY

Apollo - Staying With Owner

Name: Apollo
Breed: Red Heeler Mix
Sex: Male (altered)
Age: 3 years
Location: Albuquerque, NM

Vet Info: Apollo weighs about 45 pounds.   He is neutered and up to date on vaccines.

Owner Info: Apollo's owner adopted Apollo when he was only 19, not realizing how difficult raising a partially blind dog would be. When she first adopted Apollo, Apollo had just had his right eye removed due to small eye. Little did his owner know that he was going blind in his only eye. He still has some vision in his only eye although his owner does not know how well or how stable the blindness is. Months passed by and she soon found out that Apollo was also losing his hearing. Apollo has now lost most of his hearing, he is able to hear sounds although his perception of them is off. From a far range, his hearing is nonexistent. Apollo's owner is a twenty one year old full time college student and has a part time job as well. Apollo is a very sweet and loving dog even though his owner does not have the time to properly care for him. Even finding the time to walk him on a weekly basis is something that she cannot do as well as giving him the loving home that he deserves. He needs a home that has someone around more than she is and more specifically another dog. Apollo gets along with anyone and anything, other animals realize his impairments and become quickly tolerant of him. There is no doubt he is wonderful and that is exactly why he needs a home and an owner that can appreciate him.  Apollo is an indoor dog with run of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained.  Because of Apollo's seeing and hearing impairments he knows sign language for the following commands: Sit, wait, lie down, shake and come.  Apollo is good with people and children of all ages, and good with other dogs and cats.  His owner says that Apollo has never been aggressive towards anybody or anything. He is rather curious, especially with other animals, although they are very tolerant and even dogs that do not get along well with other dogs love Apollo.  Apollo adapts very well to new situations, fortunately he can still see a tiny amount in his only eye which allows him to freely adventure around new areas.  Apollo is a wonderful, loving dog! Everyone who meets him immediately falls in love with his silly personality. He loves to cuddle and believes he can still fit onto anyone's lap. Even though he has a few impairments he is very intuitive and kind. Even with his owner's 6 month old niece he made sure that he was gentle when he met her for the first time and licked her little feet. His owner only want the best for Apollo and even though it will be hard to surrender him, she knows that he needs a better home where he can feel comfortable and loved. Thank you so much for your consideration and time.

Petite - Outcome Unknown At This Time

Name: Petite
Sex: Female
Breed: Boxer Mix
Age: Approximately 10 years

Location: Delhi, NY

Vet/Medical Info: Petite is a sweetheart, she is so friendly and fun. Her right rear leg is short, and she's unable to use it. Her left knee on her left rear leg is fused. Because she can't use her right rear leg and can't bend her left, she walks by extending her left leg out to the side.... and she is able to get around just fine! She does have some arthritis because of her knee. She has had no rescue interest. She can't live with cats, hates them. Good with other dogs. Has beginnings of cataracts. She desperately needs a new home!

Archie - Adopted

Name: Archie
Age: 10 years
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Blue Heeler Mix
Location: Dallas, TX

Vet Info: Archie is up to date on shots. He is neutered. His most recent vet check stated that he is in "great condition." He is HW negative. He is blind, caused by "possible detached retinas."

Owner Info: Archie's owner recently died, and her daughter-in-law is trying hard to find a new home for him. She said he is a neutered Blue Heeler mix who is used to being an indoor dog with the run of the house. He is housebroken and leash-trained, and used to know some commands but no one has had time to spend with him lately to see what he knows now. He is an outgoing dog who would be happier being the only pet in the house When he lived with another dog, sometimes there would be fights between the dogs but he has never bitten or snapped at a person. Archie gets along with men and women and older kids, and it is probably best that he not be in a home with young children. The daughter-in-law doesn't know much about Archie's medical history except that he is blind. She wrote up the following information about him: Sweet ol' Archie has been through a lot lately. His favorite person passed away. Now Archie's hoping to find himself in a new loving and forever home. Archie is around 10 years old and enjoys every day to the fullest. He is believed to be completely blind but with a good leader he gets around just fine. Although it's hard for a special-needs guy like him to find a special, compassionate person to love him, we know that person is out there. Archie has so much life left! He certainly doesn’t act like a senior dog. He is very healthy and up to date on all vaccines. Although a little overweight at 68 lbs, with a regular balanced diet and some exercise, Archie can be at his ideal weight in no time. Archie would love his new potential family to know that he likes walking. He has not had many walks in his lifetime, but would love for them to be a part of his daily routine. He follows voices and stomping of feet when taking a step is necessary. Archie will thrive in a house where he is the only pet. Archie’s previous owner was ill and not able to give him the attention that he deserved. So he wants a home where he will be the one and only. Archie has one of the best personalities. Is there someone out there willing to open their hearts to a guy that is just down on his luck?

Vedder - In Memory

Name: Vedder
Breed: Puggle
Age: 10 years
Sex: Female (altered)
Location: Levittown, PA

Vet Info: Vedder is up to date on shots - received a three year rabies in April of 2010 and a distemper in January of 2010.  HW negative in May of 2012.  She is spayed.  Vedder has diabetes and is on special dog food and on insulin.  Blind due to cataracts.  The vet said that Vedder's owner is good, bringing her in for regular medical care.  She weighs 40 pounds.

Owner Info: Vedder is a 10 year old puggle who was diagnosed with diabetes a little over a year ago.  She is treated with insulin and diabetic dog food.  Unfortunately, her eye sight has slowly deteriorated with the disease.  It is very difficult for her owners to continue to care for her.  They feel she needs someone who can be around more often.  They've posted her on several sites and have asked friends, but have had no luck.  Vedder is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house.  She is housebroken and leash trained, and she knows sit, lay down, and come.  She is good with people and children of all ages.  She does not live with any other pets.  She is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, and has never shown any aggression.  They feel that she adapts well to new situations as they recently moved out of their home of 7 years, and she learned her way around the new home very quickly.  They are saddened that they cannot care for her.  Their working and busy lifestyle has really not helped her with her health, and they're hoping that she can find the new home that she deserves.

Tucker - Adopted

Name: Tucker
Breed: Pit Bull Mix
Sex: Male (altered)
Age: 4 years
Location: Merion Station, PA

Vet Info: Tucker received a three year rabies and three year distemper vaccine on 9/21/2012, and is next due on 9/21/2015. Tucker is neutered and weighs about 60 pounds.

Owner Info: Tucker was found wandering the streets about two years ago, and his original owner was never found, so the good samaritans who found him kept him.  They have 4 other dogs and 4 cats.  Unfortunately, Tucker has lost much of his peripheral vision so that he startles frequently as he does not see that a person or other dog or cat is approaching from his side.  This loss seems to be getting worse over the past year in the sense that he now sees less to each of his sides. They get around this by talking to Tucker as they approach him and that works well as he turns his head immediately to look at them approaching.  They say that other than this, Tucker is in good health. Tucker is very friendly and responds well to attention.  He is an outdoor dog with a fenced yard, he is housebroken and leash trained.  He knows sit, no, and come.  Tucker is good with both men and women, female dogs, and cats.  Tucker can be possessive with toys, treats, or food, but he has never shown aggression to any human.  However, if a male dog approaches from his side and startles him, Tucker does get very nervous.  Tucker loves people and new places. He likes to eat, sleeps well, and he likes to run!   He especially likes dog chew toys and carries one around for hours on end.   They add that Tucker is a wonderful and friendly dog.  Tucker's owners hope that he will be able to find a nice home with friendly people who like dogs and take time to pet him.  They believe that Tucker would respond best if he is the only dog in a household, and they would be reluctant to have Tucker in a household with a young child as children can easily forget and might not talk to Tucker as they approach and that would startle him.

Update 9/16/13: We just heard from Tucker's owner today. She wrote: "We are still trying hard to re-home Tucker. At this point, we have 6 other dogs, and frankly I just can't cope."

Update 11/23/13: Tucker is still looking for his forever home, please help him if you can!

Update 1/24/14: Tucker is still waiting for his new home!  His owner writes that Tucker's peripheral vision seems to be getting worse and it is very difficult for them. They are still hoping that Tucker will find a new home or rescue!

Update 4/13/14: Tucker's family said he really needs a new home soon. He has been looking for over 18 months!! Please share his information with anyone who might be interested!

Update 6/15/14: Tucker still needs a home!! He is a playful and enthusiastic dog but his owner just has too many dogs! Please share his information!!!

Vet Info: Vet said Pete is a ʺsuper dogʺ who is healthy and who has been given ʺimmaculate care.ʺ  Pete is neutered and up to date on his shots. He is HW negative and his current owner gets preventative each month.  His vision issues are due to being a blue merle.  Pete weighs 50 pounds.

He's decided to start picking fights with a boxer he currently lives with and it's not going well. He's never had issues with any other pets and lives with two other dogs a cat. Smokey - In Memory

Name: Smokey
Age: 2 years
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: Australian Shepherd/Dalmation mix
Location: Katy, Texas

Vet Info: Smokey weighs 65 pounds.  Per his owner, he is not neutered or up to date on vaccines, and has not had a recent heartworm test.

Owner Info:  Smokey's owner's daughter took him in as his previous owner was going to put him to sleep because he was blind.  She brought him home at 5wks, and he is now 2 years old. He was born blind and his left eye never developed. Per his owner, the vet said that if he removed the third eyelid from the right eye, Smokey might have some vision. She thinks he sees shadows because he will stop at the shadow of the fence at night. Her daughter has now moved out and left Smoky behind, and her mother is unable to give him the attention he needs. She has begun a relationship and severe pet allergies are involved.  She has contacted no-kill shelters, and he is on the list at one of them.  Smokey is an outdoor dog with a fenced yard, and is not housebroken or leash trained.  Smokey has shown aggression to a person who had previously hit him while trying to discipline him, and another who snuck up on him (he was surprised from behind).  She also says that he can be jealous of her other dogs.  His owner says he's in good health and is a wonderful dog with the right person, but may take a bit to build trust.  She says that he's very loving and goofy.
