Hanz - In Foster Care

Name: Hanz
Sex: Male (not yet confirmed altered)
Breed: Great Dane Mix
Age: 11 months approximately
Location: Arkansas

Vet Info: Vetting is not yet confirmed, but Hanz's caretaker notes that he's neutered, up to date on vaccines, and heartworm negative.  Hanz weighs about 100 pounds. Will update vetting once confirmed.

Owner Info: Hanz's caretaker is boarding Hanz at her kennel/boarding facility. She was told that a dane rescue saved him from a hoarder, but now won't take him in because he isn't full blooded. He is deaf and blind (his eyes are still there) and she is looking for someone to help him. He is good with dogs and kids and super sweet but has known no other life than to be kept in a small kennel outside.  Hanz is an indoor dog who is crated, he is not yet housebroken or leash trained.  He is good with people of all ages and both male and female dogs!  He is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, and has never shown any aggression.

Missy - Adopted

Name: Missy
Age: 10 years
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Shih Tzu
Location: Missouri

Vet Info: The vet verified her spay; he felt a spay scar. Missy is up to date on her shots. Her right eye has had significant corneal scarring. Her left eye is not as bad. Missy is in good health.

Owner Info: Missy is a 14 pound, 10 year old shih tzu. Her owner got her from her local vet three years ago - Missy's original owner brought her in to be euthanized, and Missy's current owner adopted her. At the time, Missy had had chronic, untreated eye infections which caused diminished vision. Missy's current owner rescues horses, and has 43 rescue horses, 13 other rescue dogs (all small dogs but one), chickens, peacocks, a steer and cats. Missy gets along with all these animals and is good with adults. She is protective of her food if the other dogs come close but has never bitten or snapped. She is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house. She is housebroken but is not leash-trained. Her owner says she is up to date on her shots and has been spayed. She has not had a heartworm test. Missy is an active dog with no concerns other than her eyesight. Her current owner wants Missy to find a new home where someone will give her more time and attention. She says: "Missy gets very little attention here and I know she would thrive in a different environment. Our lifestyles are so involved with the horse rescue that Missy gets ignored way too much."

Update 9/15/13: Missy continues to do well. Her owner now has a family member who is ill, so Missy really needs a new home soon!

Elektra - Staying With Owner

Name: Elektra
Breed: Siberian Husky
Age: 8 years
Sex: Female (altered)
Location: Harrisburg, PA area

Vet Info:  Elektra is confirmed spayed and heartworm negative.  She is next due for a rabies vaccine in July of 2015, and for distemper vaccine in July of 2013.  She has also had a recent lyme vaccine.  She was at the vet's yesterday (2/18), and was dispensed doxycycline and ear medication.  They also note that she's very recently gone blind.  Elektra weighs 65 pounds.

Owner Info: Her owner wrote: "Elektra is a perfect, healthy dog who the entire family adores. On February 12, 2013 she all of a sudden started running into everything. We took her to the vet that day. They told us she had bilateral retina detachment and is completely blind. We then went to Philadelphia to meet with an opthamologist who just told us the same thing. We have a 6 month old baby who just started crawling and a very active 7 year old child in the home. She is such a nice dog that it was never a concern but since this happened she is scared easily and we cannot risk the baby's or child's safety unfortunately. The vet suggested putting her to sleep but that just isn't an option for us, so we are so hopeful that we will be able to find a good home that can work with her. The kids and entire family are completely devastated."
Elektra is 8 years old and weighs 65 pounds.  She has been with her family for the past four years; she was adopted from a shelter.  She is an indoor dog with the run of the house. She is housetrained and leash trained, and knows the following commands:  sit, paw, other paw, treat, go bye bye, heel, stay, and lay down.  She is an outgoing girl who is good with people of all ages, other dogs, cats, and small animals.  Elektra lives with a cat, a rabbit that roams free inside the house, and a bearded dragon.  Elektra has never shown any aggression in any situation except for once, when the 7 year old in the home startled her and she snapped (did not bite).  This happened just since Elektra suddenly went blind a week ago.  The ophthalmologist said that Elektra has Bilateral Retinal Detachment. The owner wrote:" She is very healthy and is seen at her vet every few months to ensure health. She is an extremely mellow and very friendly dog. She goes outside to use the bathroom without a leash and comes right back. However, she is very good on a leash as well and loves to go for walks. She enjoys just laying on the couch with anybody to be loved on. An overall awesome companion. She is such a loved dog. We rescued her and she has been an amazing addition to our family since. We are all heartbroken that this happened (blindness). We couldn't of asked for a better pet. We are desperate to find help, we will do everything we can to avoid putting her to sleep. We really wish we were able to accommodate her special needs. We just don't feel its fair for her to have to deal with her condition and a chaotic household full of small children."

Beau - In Foster Care, Indiana Beagle Rescue

Name: Beau
Age: 8 years
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Beagle
Location: Indiana

Vet Info: The vet office verified that this owner "takes real good care of Beau and is very conscientious." Beau is up to date on his shots and is on heartworm preventitive each month, year round. He is neutered. He was sent to an ophthalmologist and it was determined he is totally blind although no one knows the reason. He has a slight head tilt (vestibular syndrome) but is "quite independent" and his health is good. He weights 37 pounds. Beau has lived his life with his sister, Mae, and might miss her when separated from her.

Owner Info: Beau's owner is moving to an apartment and can bring just one pet, and the pet must be under 25 pounds, so he cannot bring Beau. The owner has contacted everyone he can think of to find a new home for his dog with no luck. Beau is an indoor dog with the run of the house. He is housebroken and leash trained and knows many commands, including: come, are you hungry, come this way, treat, big bed, sit and no. He is an outgoing dog who is good with people of all ages and also dogs, male and female. His owner thinks, because Beau is a laid back kind of dog, that he would also be able to get along with cats (but he doesn't know for sure). Beau is not possessive of treats, toys or food, and has never bitten or snapped. In fact, his owner says that Beau "has been a wonderful companion, easy to care for, and loved by visitors and family."

No Name Jack Russell Terrier - In Foster Care

Name: No name
Age: 13 years (estimated, possibly more)
Breed: Jack Russell Terrier
Sex: Male (confirmed altered)
Location: Fort Lauderdale, FL area

Vet Info: This boy is confirmed neutered.  It is unknown if he's up to date on vaccines or has had a recent heartworm test.  The vet believes he's about 13, and possibly older.  They've ruled out glaucoma and cataracts as a cause of his eye issues, and have given his caretakers Tresaderm Dermatologic Solution.  He weighs 20.3 pounds.  Per his caregivers, he also has a heart murmur and allergies.

Owner Info: This sweet fellow was found as a stray and taken in by two kind people.  He is 100% blind, possibly deaf, and is bumping into things.  They work long hours and are hoping for rescue placement as they are unable to keep him and give him the quality of life he deserves.  They took him to vet to find out if he had a chip or if his tag could be traced so he could be returned to his owner, but had no luck.  They've also posted on Facebook and have made several phone calls.  He is an indoor dog who is crated, he appears to be housebroken and is leash trained.  At the vet's office, he was with a larger dog and a cat, and did not react at all.  He is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, and has never shown any aggression.  He's a very sweet boy!

Matt - In Memory

Name: Matt
Age: 6 - 7 years (estimated)
Breed: Lab Mix?
Sex: Male (not altered)
Location:  Southeastern Virginia

Vet Info:  Matt is not yet neutered and has not had a recent heartworm test.  He was given a one-year rabies vaccine and one-year bordetella on 1/15/2013, and the shelter where he was previously administered a one-year "annual" vaccine on 1/3/13.  Matt weighs 50 pounds.

Owner Info: Matt was picked up as a stray and taken to the local high kill shelter.  A local rescue/humane society rescued him before he was euthanized.  Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible to find a home for a special needs dog in their small area, and they are a very small rescue/humane society.  They have had him for over a month, and there has been no interest.  Matt is currently housed at the vet clinic as they have not yet found a foster for him.  They are unsure whether he is housebroken.  Matt is leash trained, and is good with people of all ages, both male and female dogs, and cats!  He's never shown any aggression, and has even gone to adoption events where he is wonderfully behaved and very calm.  He appears totally blind in both eyes, but seems healthy otherwise, and even has good teeth!

Jersey Girl - Staying With Owner

Name: Jersey Girl
Sex: Female (not altered)
Age: 8 years
Breed: Labrador Retriever
Location: New Jersey

Vet Info: No vet information listed.

Owner Info: Jersey is a 53 pound Lab who recently went blind and her owners can no longer care for her. She has been with her current owners for a few years. She is not housebroken or leashtrained. She has not been spayed, is not up to date on her shots, and has not had a HW test. When asked about whether Jersey has been to a vet, the owner wrote: "Jersey was originally taken to a vet when she was first born and then when she was three months old, and after that, we took her to the free rabies clinics that our county offers its residents. I plan on getting her vaccinated during the free clinics this month or next month, as I recently lost my job and cannot afford much else."  Jersey Girl is an outdoor dog who is good with people of all ages and with other dogs, but not with cats. She has snapped at a young child once; perhaps, the owner thinks, the child was trying to bother Jersey's food. The owner wrote: "Jersey Girl is a sweet, happy-go-lucky dog. She is a blessing to my wife and I, and it pains us to let her go, but we feel it is in her best interest (because of her blindness) to be under professional care."

Truffit - In Foster Care

Name: Truffit
Sex: Female (spay not confirmed)

Location: About two hours west of Bakersfield, CA

Vet Info: According to Truffit's owners, she is up to date on vaccines, heartworm negative, and spayed.  Truffit's vetting has not been confirmed as her elderly owner is ill, but we will update if vetting information is received.  Truffit weighs 20 pounds.  Truffit has had both eyes removed.

Owner Info: Truffit's caregiver contacted us for help in finding adorable Truffit a new home!  Truffit is a very sweet senior Jack Russell Terrier mix.  She is her caregiver's mother's dog.  Unfortunately, Truffit's elderly owner has become weaker and more confused and is no longer able to care for herself, Truffit, or her two other dogs, so she moved from Florida to California to stay with her daughter.  In addition to her mother's two other dogs, her daughter has four dogs of her own, and they are unable to keep Truffit.  Truffit is an indoor dog with run of the house, she is housebroken and both crate and leash trained.  Truffit is a smart girl who knows several commands, including Stay, Come, Sit, Down, and Eat.  Truffit is good with people of all ages, male and female dogs, and cats.  Truffit is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, but will growl if another dog tries to take away her rawhide.  She has never bitten.  According to her owner, she had an eye infection from an unknown cause her eyes were removed.  Her owner also notes that Truffit is spayed, heartworm negative, and up to date on her vaccines, although this has not been verified.  They add that Truffit compensates for her blindness very well!

Precious - In Memory

Name: Precious
Breed: Rat Terrier
Age: 10 - 11 years
Sex: Female (not altered)
Location: Right outside New Orleans, LA

Vet info: Precious is not spayed.  She is not up to date on vaccines and has not had a recent heartworm test.  Her owner is unable to afford vet care at this time.  Precious weighs 30 - 40 pounds.

Owner Info: Precious is an adorable rat terrier who has been with her owner since 2002-3.  Unfortunately, her owner is dealing with some recent deaths in the family.  In addition to that, she has lost her job and is having difficulty just caring for herself.  For the last couple of months, it has seemed that Precious has been losing her sight and has a white discoloration in her eyes, but lately her blindness has gotten worse, and she is running into things.  Her owner loves Precious dearly and would love for her to finish her life in a patient and loving home.  Precious is an indoor dog with run of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained.  Precious is a smart girl and knows the commands "SIT, LAY DOWN, NO, GET YOUR TOY, SHHHHHHH, wanna treat?"  She is good with both men and women, and male dogs (her owner did not check that she's good with female dogs).  Precious is not possessive of toys, treats, or food and has shown aggression only when someone knocks at the door as a form of protection.  She does not have a problem after they answer the door. Her owner notes that overall, they've never had any problems with her health besides scratching ears sometimes, and that she has never had fleas or ticks. She wants us to know, "Precious really is a good dog and deserves the best. I love her with all my heart that is why i am taking these steps to make sure she has a good quality of life".

Update 6/5/2013: Precious's owner is going through some very difficult times and has also lost her job, which is making it very difficult for her to care for herself.  She is unable to give Precious the care that she needs.

Leader - Adopted

Name: Leader
Age: 11 years
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Chihuahua/Fox Terrier Mix
Location: Southeastern Pennsylvania

Vet Info:  Leader is up to date on all shots.  He is neutered.  In 2010, the vet confirmed blindness but there are no details on the cause.  He has recently had a dental, and had a negative HW test done in 2010.  There are no knownhealth issues at this time for Leader.

Owner Info:  Leader is a 15 pound male dog whose owner has had him since he was 8 weeks of age.  The owner is unable to keep him any longer due to a job relocation, so he has been boarding at a kennel since before Thanksgiving 2012.  Leader is a little shy when first meeting someone and has snapped at new kennel workers but has never bitten anyone.  Once he gets to know someone (and it doesn't take long), he then enjoys being petted. He doesn't like to be picked up but will jump into your arms once he gets to know you.  He is housetrained and leashtrained and knows basic commands.  He does not chew things he shouldn't.  He is good with adults (prefers women) but he is not good with children under the age of ten.  He is also not good with other pets (cats or dogs).  He is healthy and completely blind, due to a genetic eye disease.  His eyes are cloudy and he does not need any medication for them.  The staff at the kennel love him and say he is a great boy!

Mickey - Staying With Owner

Name: Mickey
Age: 1.5 years
Breed: Dachshund (double dapple)
Sex: Male (altered)
Location: An hour north of Cincinnati, OH

Vet Info: Mickey is confirmed neutered.  He had a dental in April of 2012.  He was due for his rabies, distemper, and bordetella vaccines on 11/30/2012.  They had no record of heartworm testing, however his owner notes he has been on heartworm preventative, and she does plan on having him vaccinated.  Mickey weighs 7 pounds.  According to his owner, Mickey has partial blindness due to double dapple breeding.  There is no vision in one eye and partial in the other, but he gets around very well.  She also said that he was a cryptorchid and was neutered upon adoption

Owner Info: Mickey is an adorable young mini dachshund whose owner is having a baby in one week.  She is hoping to find placement for Mickey as he's having difficulty in her home.  His owners adopted him a year ago, and he has recently shown much fearful behavior toward their other dogs. He seems afraid most of the time, and is fearful of the other dogs' movements. However, when separated from the other dogs, he is happy and seemingly well adjusted.  His owner believes he needs a home without other dogs or small children.  Mickey was a rescue dog, but the rescue can only take him back into boarding care at a clinic as they have no available foster homes.  Mickey's owner does not want to do that to Mickey because of his fear and anxiety, and they are hoping for rescue placement so he can have the home he deserves.  Mickey is an indoor dog with run of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained.  Mickey knows the commands, "sit" and "drop"!  Mickey can be possessive of toys, treats, or food, but his owner believes he has been reacting out of fear and attacking the other dogs.  Mickey has also nipped at his owner's ankle when she accidentally bumped into him while he had a bully stick.  His owner adds that Mickey loves people!!  He welcomes visitors into the house and loves attention. He likes to play with toys and people.  His owner said, "I am due to have a baby in 1 week. I am desperate to find help for Mickey. He is a very loving and kind dog and deserves to feel safe and happy. This is heartbreaking."

Abby - Adopted

Name:  Abby
Age: 10 - 14 years
Sex:  Female (altered)
Breed: Rat Terrier Mix
Location: Middletown, CT

Vet Info: Abby is confirmed spayed.  She received a one year rabies vaccine on 1/10/13, and DAPPv on the same date.  Both are next due 1/10/14.

Owner Info: Abby is 10-14 years old. Per her caregiver, she is up to date on rabies & distemper vaccines. She weighs 8.5 pounds and appears to be in generally good shape aside from her old age & blindness. She would do best in a quiet home with a mellow adult who would like to keep her on their lap. She likes to go for walks.  She gets anxious around excitement and activity. She seems not to be housebroken, but she is new to the home.  Abby walks well on her harness and leash, and follows directly behind you.  She walks slowly.  Her caregiver has had her in the home since Monday January 7th, and she seems to be getting more ill-tempered as time goes on. She was hoping she would settle in and become more relaxed, but instead Abby appears to be getting more territorial and bossy.  Abby is old and blind (her caregiver's vet believes it is a degenerative condition of the cornea) and tiny. She lived with an elderly woman as an only pet all her life.  Her caregivers imagine she is petrified, as they have 2 healthy young dogs & 2 healthy young children, a high energy household which is all completely foreign to her. She startles if awakened and growls and nips at unwelcome advances. She also shows guarding behavior at feeding time.  Abby learned how to use the doggie door within minutes of being in their home. She learned her way around the 2 rooms she has access to. She is also starting to learn the routines- ie. when it's meal time and when it's time to go outside. She is nervous, but she's definitely smart, and a tough cookie. They have listed her on rescueme.com, and are waiting for wagging tails to put her on petfinder. They really wanted her to go YESTERDAY, but  do not have the heart to take her to a shelter. They add that "there is something really special about this little girl!!   If you could find her a quiet home with a safe cozy place to sleep, she would not be demanding of time or attention."

UPDATE 2/26/2013: Molly will be euthanised if she can't find someone safe to go in the next day!!!

Rapper - Staying With Owner
