Max - In Memory

Name: Max
Age: 11 years old
Breed: Chow mix
Sex: Male (altered)
Location: Fort Worth, TX area

Vet Info: Max is neutered.  Max had a three year rabies vaccine on 3/29/12 and is next due 3/29/15.  His owner has recently given him a 7-Way shot.  Max is heartworm positive and is doing very well on the slow-kill method, per owner.  Max weighs 40 pounds.

Owner Info: Max is a very handsome former shelter dog who was saved by his current owner.  He appears to be completely blind.  Max has been very fearful the whole time they have had him, and has been attacked three times by the other dogs at their house, which has, of course, increased his fear. They love him very much and say he has a beautiful little spirit, but needs more attention than they are able to give, and if possible, to be an only dog or, his owner believes, with more submissive dogs.  His owner says that he seems to want to be friends outside, but doesn't know how.  Max does get along with both adults and children, and has been around their cat with no incidents.     Max is an indoor dog with run of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained.  He can be possessive of toys, treats, or food, and while he has growled, he has never bitten, and did not fight back when he was attacked.  His owner writes, "You can just feel his wanting to live life & be free. He is not free having to worry constantly. He is amazing & gets around well, even uses a doggie door, despite his sight problem. He is about 11, but seems younger spunk-wise.  I want him to have peace & be happy for the years he has left. That is just not possible with us!  He is amazingly healthy for his age & HW status. He has a positive spirit. He is just ready to blossom in the right environment. He is physically a gorgeous dog."

Cassie - Staying With Owner

Name: Cassie
Age: 3 years
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Pit Bull
Location: Southern California

Vet Info: Cassie is spayed and up to date on her shots.  There is no record of a HW test.  She needs a dental.

Owner Info: The current owner saved Cassie from a shelter after Cassie was left there by her owner.  The current owner has had her for one month.  Cassie is 3 years old and 42 pounds. She has "tissue where her eyes should be" and the owner said the vet believes she was born this way.  She is an indoor dog who is crated.  She is housebroken and not yet leashtrained.   She is good with people but not with other animals, and has been aggressive to the owner's other dogs. The owner explained: "I rescued Cassie from an owner surrender to the pound, where they were going to euthanize her. I met her on a radio call at work as a police officer. I brought sweet Cassie home one month ago, with the intention of fostering her and trying to find her a home. Cassie lived with three other dogs with her prior owners, and got along with them fine. I think the fear of new dogs and a new home have caused her to act out with my dogs. I have three dogs at my home and have tried to integrate Cassie into the pack slowly, a task I have completed with other dogs in the past. With and without a muzzle, Cassie has tried to bite my dogs even while on a walk. If I could find a way to integrate her, I would absolutely love to keep Cassie. She was with her prior owners from birth to 3 years old and was solely kept in their yard, never inside or taken for a walk.  She enjoys meeting people. Cassie is sweet and loving.  She has already adapted to the yard and garage, and can find her food and bed with no help.  She loves to play with a rope and chase me."

Update 9/16/13: Beautiful Cassie is still looking for a new home!!!

Puppy - In BDRA Foster Care

Name: Puppy
Age: 8 years
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Pom mix
Location: Chicago, IL

Vet Info: Puppy is neutered. He is not up to date on his shots and has not been seen by the vet since May of 2011. (The owner says she will get him up to date on his shots if someone will take him)

Owner Info: Puppy's owner is moving and cannot take him with her. Puppy is 8 years old and weighs 16 pounds. The owner found Puppy as a stray and kept him "because he has such a loving spirit." Puppy is an outdoor dog who is housetrained and leashtrained. He gets along with everyone, plus dogs and cats. He knows many commands, including come, stop, no, yes, lay down, be quiet and give me kisses. He is very friendly and mild-mannered. He is not yet current on his shots but the owner is willing to get these done. She said: "He is in good shape and gets a lot of exercise because I have a huge yard for him to move around freely. He is not accustomed to being in a cage; therefore, I want him to go to a good home where he will not be locked up."

Update 11/27/13: Puppy still needs to find his forever home!

Addie - Adopted

Name: Addie
Age: 9 years
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Australian Shepherd
Location: Dallas, TX

Vet Info:  Addie is spayed. She is up to date on her shots, including rabies.

Owner Info: Addie's owner's schedule has changed, and she is no longer able to spend much time with Addie so wants her to be rehomed.  Addie is 9 years old and weighs 48 pounds.  She is an indoor dog with the run of the house. She is housebroken and leashtrained, and knows the command:  back.  She is an outgoing girl who gets along with people of all ages, and with female dogs and cats.  Sometimes she has been aggressive with other dogs if they come close to her owner but otherwise is fine with other dogs.  When asked more about the aggression with other dogs, Addie's owner writes: "It's kind of complicated explaining Addie's aggression. I thought she was aggressive toward most dogs, but the boarding facility that she's stayed at several times told me she does fine with the others dogs when they take them on walks and when she's around them, etc. So, she's really only aggressive when other dogs approach me because I think she thinks I'm her 'sheep' that she's protecting. I think it goes along with the Aussie herding pattern. She has seemed to be more aggressive with male dogs, rather than female. When she has been, she growls and snaps, but then backs away, so I think it's more of a warning maneuver on her part." Addie did snap at a toddler once who pulled her hair, but did not actually bite or make contact with the skin.  Addie is completely blind but otherwise is in good health.  The owner writes:  "Addie is very cute and has a cute personality.  People seem drawn to her. She is a favorite at her boarding facility."

Buffy - Adopted

Name: Buffy
Age: 6 - 8 years (estimated)
Breed: Terrier/Schnauzer Mix?
Sex: Female (altered)
Location: Southwest Indiana

Vet Info:  Buffy is confirmed spayed (confirmed by spay scar per vet).  She is up to date on vaccines and is heartworm negative.  She is scheduled for a dental on Wednesday.  Buffy weighs approximately 20 pounds.

Owner Info:  Buffy was found wandering in the middle of the road.  Her caretaker has taken Buffy in as her owners were unable to be found.   Buffy's caretaker has many foster dogs who she is also trying to find homes for, and Buffy is currently confined to one room as her caretaker is trying to be very careful with her and make sure she stays safe.  She is hoping for rescue for sweet Buffy so that she can have the home she deserves as she is unable to keep her.    Buffy is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained.  Buffy did fine with the person's dogs who found her, but she is currently kept separated from her caretaker's dogs for her own safety, as her caretaker is not sure how her dogs will react.  Buffy gets along well with people.  Buffy is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, and has never shown any aggression.  Her caretaker writes, "She does run into everything.  Eyes seem to be wide open and do not respond to light. She seems to be very sweet and wants attention".  Buffy seems to be a healthy girl.  Her caretaker also says, "She just deserves to find someone to live the rest of her life with and to be loved".

Floyd - Staying With Owner

Name: Floyd
Age: 6 years
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Boxer/Collie Mix
Location: Los Angeles area, CA

Vet Info: Floyd is neutered and up to date on his shots. He has been brought into the vet regularly for care. In the area where Floyd lives, they do not have an issue with heartworm so he has not been tested.

Owner Info: The owner wrote: "Our beloved family pet's name is Floyd. He is 6 years old. We were told he is a boxer collie mix, although he looks more like a dingo. We have had him since he was 8 weeks old. He is neutered and up to date on all of his shots. He is kennel trained and very obedient. We truly got lucky with this one. He is such a great dog. He has never been aggressive or in a fight, although he is protective of his owners. He is a one of a kind dog and we have been honored to own him. Unfortunately we do not have time to care for him now that he is blind. He was diagnosed with Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration (SARDs). He has only had this for about 2 months. We had extensive blood work and urinalysis done on Floyd and everything came back normal. We were then referred to a specialist where he was diagnosed with SARDs. We have a toddler and a baby at home and are very busy. We just don't have the time to care for him properly. He is currently an inside dog, where he has spent the majority of his life. He was outside while are children were infants for about 1 year. Newborns and dog hair just don't mix. He has since been back inside where we can enjoy his company. We want him to go to a wonderful home where someone has time to care for him, take him on walks, and enjoy his companionship. Thank you for all that is involved in caring for our dog. We love our Floyders!!!" Floyd is housetrained and leashtrained. He gets along well with people of all ages and with other dogs, but will be protective of his owner and growl if a strange dog runs up to him. He has not bitten or snapped. He knows some commands, including sit, stay, and lay down. His owner said that he is very well-behaved and gets along well with her young children.

Echo-Adopted

Name: Echo
Age: 9 years (estimated)
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Bichon Frise Mix
Location: Houston, Texas area

Vet Info: Echo is confirmed spayed and up to date on vaccines including influenza. Her next rabies vaccine is due 2/20/14.  They were unable to confirm HW status but she is receiving Heartgard. She is currently boarding at the vet's.

Owner Info: Echo is a beautiful and sweet little girl who was abandoned in a back yard when her owners moved.   A good samaritan brought her to a vet where she was picked up by a rescue volunteer.  The volunteer was told Echo's right eye is completely gone and her left eye has advanced retina degeneration.  The pressure is fine in both eyes and the rest of her health is good.  The rescue has been unable to find a foster home for Echo and they've not had success in the past finding homes for blind dogs, so they are hopeful Echo will be able to be placed with another rescue so that she can have the life she deserves.  When they first got Echo she was very scared and starving.  She had been chased for blocks by a man and so was defensive and did snap, but she has settled down quickly!  They say she "now loves to be handled and gives kisses"!  She is not possessive of toys, treats, or food.  She has been walked with other dogs and is fine, and the vet's office also says she gets along with other dogs.  She even seems like she wants to play with some dogs!  As Echo is boarding at the vet's, they are unsure if she is housebroken, but she is leash trained.  Echo is a very sweet and adorable little girl!

Khen - Urgent

Name: Khen
Age: 11 years
Breed: Lethal White Aussie
Sex: Male (altered)
Location: Young, AZ

Vet info: Khen is confirmed neutered and is up to date on vaccines.  He is heartworm negative.  Khen weighs 78 pounds.

Owner Info: Khen's sanctuary has closed and he is in desperate need of placement.  He is an outdoor dog with a fenced yard, he is not yet housebroken, but is leash trained.  He is a nervous dog, but he is good with both men and women, and he is in good health.   He can be food aggressive and human aggressive, but he is progressing!!  He went from not be able to be petted to now accepting pets with a calm person. He is responding well to walking on a leash now and wasn't a short time ago.  Khen is looking for a very special person to work with him and understand his needs.  His owner writes, "Khen is making good progress w some extra volunteer help. He is walking on a leash and he can be pet!! He can change his behaviors with the right amount of care & love. Please consider helping find a home asap!"

From his original post so you can see the progress Khen has made: Khen is a beautiful Lethal White Aussie, born blind and deaf. Please help!!! Khen is in urgent need of a special Angel either directly or thru a rescue that will take his special needs and temperament into consideration when working with him! He was born blind and deaf. He is quite neurotic. He barks at the ground constantly. He can be human aggressive if one touches around his head. He is food aggressive. Will walk on a leash when one can get the leash on him.
Every dog deserves a chance to belong to a loving family, we want Khen to get that chance! Please help!!!

Update 6/5/2013: Khen is VERY, VERY URGENT! We just heard that he is still at the sanctuary which is closing and he is not making much progress with his behavior because they only have two volunteers - the volunteers don't have the time to work with him.  Khen needs and deserves someone who will help him continue to make progress, and give him love and a forever home!

Update 7/21/13 - Here is another plea for Khen, whose sanctuary is now closing soon!  He really needs a home and someone who will take some time with him, to help him continue to make progress!

Update 11/27/13: Khen is still living outside, still waiting for a forever home!!

Update 4/13/14: Khen has been waiting for a forever home for a year now. Please share his information!!! He is so tired of waiting!

Update 11/19/14: Khen is still living outside & doing ok. Several other dogs have been adopted but unfortunately Khen needs someone with a special heart.  Please see if someone could take him. Another cold winter is upon those still remaining.

Update 5/4/2016: Not much has changed except we need Khen to finally go somewhere! We can no longer keep any of dogs there. We can offer some support for whoever takes him. Please help us because he isn't mean or aggressive, just will startle when touched around the face unexpectedly. But he can be walked on leash. He is unpredictable which I'd understandable given his condition. Really needs a special place. Thanks for any assistance.

Gunner - In Foster Care

Name: Gunner
Breed: Australian Shepherd
Age: 3 1/2 months (DOB 12/25/12)
Sex: Male (not altered)
Location: About an hour northwest of Columbus, Ohio

Vet Info: Gunner is due for his third puppy booster vaccines and rabies vaccine on 4/27/13, so he is currently up to date on his vaccines.  Gunner is not neutered and no hw test has been done.  Gunner weighs 20 pounds.

Tula - Staying With Owner

Name: Tulita (Tula)
Age: Estimated 1 1/2 years
Breed: Labrador / Husky Mix
Sex: Female (altered)
Location: Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada

Vet Info: Tula is confirmed spayed.  She was due for rabies and 5 in 1 vaccines on 2/22/13.  They have no record of heartworm testing.  Tula takes Prednisone regularly.  Tula weighs 45 pounds.

Owner Info: Tula is a rescued dog who was found almost frozen to death in -25 degree temperatures. As a result, she suffered damage to her peripheral vision. Her vision straight ahead appears fine; however, the vet tested her peripheral vision and found she did not respond at all to the tests. Tula's owner says that Tula is a sweetheart and they love her to bits; however, she is not a suitable match for their home, which has four children, and they are afraid of what might happen. Because of Tula's impaired peripheral vision, sudden movements at the side of her head startle her.  This is likely why she startles at things she does not see approaching her from the sides. Tula is an indoor dog with run of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained.  Tula knows the commands "sit", "stay" and "come" - sometimes!  She is good with both men and women.  She has played aggressively with their other dog, and her owner writes, "Tula is nervous when meeting new dogs. After the initial meeting (a couple minutes), she generally ignores other dogs; however, she defensively snaps at them when they come into her "space" when she first meets them. She has also snapped at people on a few occasions, when they have surprised her from the side (where she cannot see well). Two of her "snaps" have broken skin. Both were defensive, not aggressive."  They add that "she is generally happy and excited about most things/new experiences. She loves the outdoors and being active.Tula is very healthy and full of energy. She would make someone a wonderful running, biking or skijoring partner. I do not think she is suitable for our family, which includes small children. She loves people! Though, sometimes she is a bit shy, when first meeting men. Tula will be an AWESOME dog for someone. She just is not suitable for our family; however, we have had a wonderful year with her."

Update 5/25/2013: Due to personal circumstances, Tula's owner is unable to keep her for much longer.  Tula's owner is willing to pay for Tula's flight to a legitimate 501c3 rescue, so please don't let distance be a factor!

Ernie - Adopted

Name: Ernie (also known as Stevie Wonder)
Age: Unknown
Breed: Chihuahua
Sex: Male (confirmed altered)
Location: Los Angeles, CA

Vet info: Ernie is confirmed neutered and was given bordetella and dhlpp vaccines on 3/23/13.  He is microchipped.  Ernie has not yet had a rabies vaccine because he was on amoxicillin, but will shortly.  His owner will update once he receives it.   Ernie weighs 8 pounds.

Owner info: Ernie is a very sweet chihuahua with no eyes.  It is believed he has a genetic condition in which his eyes never developed.  He was pulled from a Los Angeles shelter before he was euthanized, and his rescuer is unable to keep him.  She is hoping Ernie can find rescue so that he can have the life he deserves!  Ernie is not yet housebroken, but he is leash trained, and his owner is working on housebreaking him.  She says that he seems to understand the command, "stay"!  Ernie is good with people of all ages and both male and female dogs.  He has not been around cats.  Ernie has never shown any aggression and is not possessive of toys, treats, or food.  His owner writes, "He is very, very sweet. I imagine what he went through over the past few weeks (being dumped at the shelter)was very traumatizing and stressful for a blind dog. Despite this he has been taking everything in stride and has not been the least bit aggressive."  He was even very well-behaved at the vet's office where he had a dental and had many teeth removed.  Ernie is still learning her home and does bump once in a while and step in the water bowl, but now knows where his bed is.  His owner says, "I'm really impressed with how well behaved this dog is. He's gentle and adaptive and just wants a lot of love. He doesn't bark; he's really very quiet, occasionally he whines a little for attention. The only challenge with him is that he isn't housebroken. I'm thinking he may have spent a lot of time outside."

Dobbie - In Tri-State Rescue Foster Care, Ohio

Name: Dobbie
Age: Estimated 5 or 6 years
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: Standard Collie
Location: Grand Rapids, MI area

Vet Info: Unable to be verified.

Owner Info: I have a Standard Collie I helped rescue. He has no center vision, so he looks like he is looking at you from the side, but his eyes are clear and bright and he gets around as well as any dog. He just sees different. The vet said it is most likely from trauma to the head. He was abused, but it does not show at all. He is very loving and fun to play with. Gorgeous sable and white coat. Asking $25.00 . Please give this guy a chance. He was an inside dog, but not here. My female is in and he marks. Thank you.

Additional information from his owner: He is not blind. He sees different and gets around just fine in and out of his kennel. He runs around trees, in and out of the barn, everywhere. His name is Dobbie (from Harry Potter), as he was abused. (Pronounced like Bobby). He is about five. He is not in a desperate need to be moved quickly. I have just gathered too many animals and then none of them get enough attention and that is not fair. He is not neutered. He gets along with other dogs. Him and my male got into it a little when my female went into heat, but nothing serious. The lady who originally rescued him had him in the house with four other dogs. He had been starved and beaten. The vet believes his odd vision was caused by head trauma. He sees more through peripheral from long distance and can with his center vision up close.

Bo - In Memory

Name: Bo
Age: 4 months
Breed: Coonhound / Boxer Mix
Sex:  Male (not altered)
Location: North Carolina

Vet Info: Bo is up to date on his shots, including rabies.  He is not neutered.  The vet does not believe he is blind and thinks instead that Bo may have a neurological problem that will resolve, and he should follow up at the vet within a few weeks.

Owner Info: Bo was initially pulled by a rescue from a shelter but now no longer wants him because of his bad eyesight and digestive issues.  He weighs 18 pounds. He is an indoor dog who is not yet housetrained or  leashtrained.  He is good with people of all ages but can be nervous and shy. He is good with other animals too.  He is not possessive of treats or toys, and is friendly. He has never bitten or snapped.  He is on Pancreaved for his digestive issues.

Update: Unfortunately, Bo had gotten much worse neurologically. The neurologist thought that it was from the distemper virus, and Bo was euthanized.  Bo is free to run now and I am sure he is! He was such a fighter and never gave up, even in the end!

Stevie - Adopted

Name: Stevie
Age: Approximately 8 years
Breed: Yellow Labrador
Sex: Male (altered)
Location: Virginia Beach, VA

Vet Info: Stevie is confirmed neutered.  He is up to date on his vaccines and his next rabies vaccine is due 7/11/14.  Stevie is heartworm negative and weighs about 80 pounds.

Owner Info: Stevie a wonderful and very happy blind yellow lab who is looking for a new place to call home. Unfortunately, Stevie's dad is ill and has made the extremely difficult decision to find Stevie a new home.  Stevie's dad writes, "I desperately want to see him find a forever home and feel awful that I'm not able to any longer provide the safe loving home that he deserves. He has a lot of love to give. He has energy to go on long walks and loves chasing after a ball where he can run free a bit. He also likes to go to bed between 8-8:30 and sleeps well all through the night." Stevie came from a Virginia shelter and was pulled by rescue.  Stevie's dad was his foster, and he knew right away that he couldn't let Stevie go!   And so Stevie became a permanent member of the family. Stevie is good with men, women, and children, and both male and female dogs.  Stevie is housebroken and leash trained, but does occasionally pull a bit on the leash.  Stevie will be happy being the only dog or in a home with other dogs!  Stevie is not possessive of toys, treats or food, and may show "fear aggression" when he first meets another dog.  He is frightened of noises like fireworks and certain loud machines. Stevie's dad asks that his new family be patient.  He writes, "it's gonna take some time and patience for him to adapt.  My son got a Westie puppy last year and though they would walk on leashes fine together we waited about three months to let them play together. Now they are best friends who tug at toys together and bite on each others throats in the most playful and gentle manner".   Stevie did get into fights with one dog at the rescue, but this has not happened since.

Baby - In Cocker Pals Foster Care

Name: Baby
Age: 7 years
Breed: Toy Poodle
