Dallas - Staying With Owner

Name: Dallas
Age: Estimated 3 years
Breed: Black Labrador
Sex: Male (altered)
Location: Syracuse, NY area

Vet Info: Dallas is confirmed neutered and is next due for a rabies vaccine in March, 2016. He was due for distemper and parvo vaccines in March, 2014. Dallas had a 4dx test in May, 2014, and he was negative for everything tested. Dallas is diabetic and weighs about 70 pounds. The vet's office commented on what a sweet boy he is!

Owner Info: Dallas is a very handsome boy who was saved from a "neglectful situation". His caregiver was told he would have a home, but it fell through, and she doesn't feel that she's capable of meeting his needs. She has children and they do a lot of traveling, and she's unable to find someone willing to commit to his insulin injections. She also doesn't have the financial means to continue his care and says that he deserves more attention than they're able to give. She's tried friends, relatives, neighbors, and Facebook, but has had no luck finding Dallas a new home. She has had Dallas for two months. She writes that he's partially blind but since he's been with her, it's gotten worse. Dallas is an indoor dog with run of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained. He's a smart boy and knows the commands - up, down, sit, load up! He is good with people of all ages, both male and female dogs, and cats, and lives with dogs and cats now. Dallas is not possessive of toys, treats, or food and has never bitten or snapped. His caregiver wrote that she thought a good home for Dallas would be with older adults, and gave more details - "he is great with kids but if they get playing he can't really see them so he will start jumping to play but just doesn't really know where things are. He doesn't intentionally hurt them. I also say older adults because they have a tendency to not have as busy lives and Dallas doesn't like to be alone. He rides very well, he just lays on the floor."

Update 8/25/2014: Dallas is not doing well medically so his current owner is going to keep him and take care of him. It is sad news about Dallas, but he is lucky to be able to stay where he is.

Franklin - Adopted

Name: Franklin
Age: 8 years
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Shih Tzu
Location: Near Harrisburg, PA

Vet Info: Franklin is neutered. He is up to date on his rabies and distemper. He is heartworm negative. He has a heart murmur. His lungs are clear. He was last on blood pressure medication in March of 2013. He is blind, with corneal dystrophy, and the pupils are non-responsive.

Owner Info: Franklin is a somewhat hyper and active dog. He's very friendly to adults and older kids. He likes to nip at small children which is why his first owners returned him to the breeder when he was around 6 months old, and then he was adopted by an elderly woman who has had him since. However, she is now in poor health and can no longer care for Franklin, so her daughter-in-law is trying to find a new home for Franklin. He likes to jump up on people. He liked walks and did pretty good on a leash before he went blind. He got used to sleeping in bed with the mother-in-law and watched TV lying next to her on the sofa. He also has gotten a little spoiled when it comes to eating, and likes a mixture of wet and dry dog food in his bowl and got a snack of ice cream every night. The daughter-in-law says that's why he's so chubby! He weighs ten pounds. Franklin can be very aggressive around and toward other dogs. He barks, snarls and growls at them no matter what size they are. The daughter-in-law tried to introduce him to her 4 boxer girls and he tried to attack them through the baby gates she had set up. He has always been like this with other dogs, so needs to be the only dog (he is OK with cats). Franklin is still living in the mother-in-law's house and is being cared for by the daughter-in-law and neighbors. He is housebroken and looking for a new home!

Baby Boy (BB) - Staying With Owner

Name: Baby Boy (BB)
Breed: Pomeranian
Sex: Male (altered)
Age: Over 10 years
Location: Torrance, CA

His caregiver writes that he's very cute and sweet and gets along with other dogs, and only wants to sit in a lap and be loved all day and night. She says, "He is alert, clean, and sweet-natured". He is underweight at almost 8 pounds, but should weigh between 9 and 10 pounds. BB is not housebroken and has not showed any aggression.

Star Fox - Staying With Owner

Name: Star Fox
Age: 4 years
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Shepherd mix
Location: Northern Georgia

Vet Info: Star Fox is confirmed neutered and weighs 45 pounds. He is about 85% blind according to the vet and can see shadows. He had a dental done in 2012 and he is on Fluoxetine (Prozac). He had his vaccinations at another vet’s office and his owner says he is current with vaccinations but this has not yet been confirmed.

Owner Info: Star Fox is a beautiful shepherd mix whose owner must give him up due to his wife’s recent medical issues. He reports that Star Fox is constantly underfoot and they worry that he will trip her which would worsen her injuries. The owners have had Star Fox since he was one year old after he was abandoned in the neighborhood. The owner feel that he may have been abused as a puppy. He said the vet thinks that he was born with sight but became blind due to abuse. Star Fox is an indoor dog with run of the house; he is housebroken, not leash-trained. He knows the commands go outside and down and he comes when you all him. He is good with men, women, and children, as well as male and female dogs. The owner has three other dogs and a miniature pig. He writes that Star Fox “doesn’t like the pig” and once snapped at him but didn’t break the skin. Star Fox's owner says he is nervous and "likes to be near us." He “will bark at people he doesn’t know” but will adapt to new situations after getting familiar. He is crated when the owners leave and he “has no issues with this.” Star Fox’s owner is very sad to give him up and says he would keep him were it not for his wife’s condition. He writes that “he is healthy, no issues” and “he is very sweet once he gets to know you.”

Chloe - Adopted

Name: Chloe
Age: 3-4 years
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Mixed Breed
Location: Arkansas

Vet Info: The vet has confirmed the spay.

Owner Info: Chloe was originally a foster dog for the eldest member of the local humane society. The member is now 89 years old and is terminally ill due to cancer. He has 3-6 months to live. He does have a caretaker who owns dogs, but she cares nothing about his dogs. Chloe has been moved to a kennel off his property where she is alone and she is becoming depressed after being with other dogs for several years. Chloe is a very sweet girl who loves to get as close as possible to people when they come to see her. She will nuzzle up under their chin. Chloe is partially blind after a bout with blastomycosis. She is blind in her right eye. After developing blastomycosis, she lost a lot of weight, so she is currently underweight. Also her depression is not helping the situation at all. She weighs about 30 pounds. She is not housebroken but does well on a leash without pulling, and is very obedient. She gets along with people of all ages and with dogs. She is so lonely, and very much wants a home and love!

Update 8/25/2014: Chloe has had a bit of a rough time over the past month - she redeveloped blastomycosis but she is getting the medical care she needs and is slowly improving. She needs a loving forever home with someone who can give her the love and attention can care she deserves!

Update 10/3/14: Chloe is doing SO much better and is playful and running now. In two weeks I will be taking her to the vet to see if she might be able to stop taking the medications for the blastomycosis. He told me she may never be able to stop the meds, but I'm keeping my paws crossed. She is still blind in her right eye, but she is loving life now.

Babydoll - Adopted

Name: Babydoll
Age: 2 years
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Beagle Mix
Location: Alabama

Vet Info: Babydoll was spayed on May 20th. The vet said the owner brought in a medical history that showed Babydoll got a one year rabies shot on April 21, 2014. Babydoll has atrophy/scarring of the globe of her left eye (probably from an injury) and has normal vision in her right.

Owner Info: Babydoll became a stray after her owner was incarcerated, and a local rescue took her in, but the rescue is out of room and so Babydoll needs a new home! She weighs 35 pounds. She gets along with all people and cats and dogs. She is housebroken and leash trained. She understands the command: go outside. It seems like Babydoll might have been mistreated in the past, as she shakes and runs whenever someone gets out a broom to sweep. She is a wonderful dog, looking for a wonderful home!

Sugar - Adopted

Name: Sugar
Age: 3 years
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Shih Tzu
Location: Alabama

Vet Info: The vet confirmed that Sugar has a spay scar. Sugar has some vision but "not much." The left eye has atrophy/scarring of the globe, probably due to an injury. She has dry eye in both eyes.

Owner Info: Sugar is a very calm, passive, and loving little dog who was rescued 6 months ago from certain death at the local shelter by a local rescue, but the rescue does not have room to keep her. She weighs 8 pounds. She is housebroken and leash trained. She understands "do you want to go out?" She gets along well with other animals and is also good with people of all ages, including children. Her vision has been improving since the dry eye has been treated (she needs drops daily). Her current owner said she is up to date on her shots. She is precious, and looking for a new home!

Buffalo - No Longer In Need

Name: Buffalo
Age: 8 weeks
Breed: Golden Doodle
Sex: Male (not altered)
Location: Southwest Colorado

Vet Info: Buffalo has had his first set of puppy boosters and will be due for distemper and parvo vaccines on August 12th. The vet's office commented that he is the sweetest thing!! Buffalo weighs 6.6 pounds.

Owner Info: DOB 5/26/14. Buffalo is an adorable and very sweet puppy whose owner wants him to have a loving home with someone who has the resources to care for him. Buffalo was born at his owner's home. She wrote, "His mom injured him when he was two weeks old--a head injury, and now we notice that Buffalo has limited vision. His nose is so compensatory that we didn't notice any disability for a long time. Often, he'll just sit and watch my husband at work at his desk, following his movements, but there are depth-perception issues, and both eyes (that look quite normal) are affected to some extent." Other than his blindness, Buffalo is a healthy puppy, and he lives with three other dogs. His owner feels he will adapt well to new situations because "Buffalo loves everybody!" He's just a happy and playful little fellow who doesn't know that he has any vision problem!

Update 9/14/2014: Buffalo’s owner has been working with a neurologist and feels Buffalo is now ready for rescue! Briefly, a recent MRI showed a lot of fluid in the brain ventricles, but they feel no surgery is necessary, and Buffalo is on medication that will hopefully remove the excess fluid, and may also help his vision. He has had seizures in the past and is somewhat uncoordinated, but this is improving. His owner writes, "Today, we were all outside with little smart phone cameras trying to take some video of Buffalo running around full tilt. Zip, Zip…Big figure 8s and sailing jumps through the air--and not smacking into anything--just showing off. It's not just that he's blind and cute and all, but what he can DO while being blind. All we got were a lot of blurs and trees and grass; funny video, but no Buffalo in it."

Update 10/10/14: Buffalo is a mini-Goldendoodle; he weighs about 16 pounds at this time, and he's a slim dog. We take him out on a schedule (schedules are best for Buffalo), and if we stick to schedule, we don't have accidents. If we don't stick to his schedule, we do. Buffalo is doing better--makes me happy--My husband says that he doesn't "know if it's the meds or that he's getting more mature. He does still guard his food bowl. The vet said that he needed more doggie exposure, and we've companioned him with a very small, busy Cocker puppy. Mostly, they enjoy bark-fests for five min per day in the mornings. Later in the day, they are just there as a presence for the other, until Miss Cocker goes home in the evening. But he didn't guard his food before this pup came to keep him company. He does eat alone; she can't snatch his food."

Update 10/20/2014: "Buffalo has not had seizures in a long time. And you are right, it would take another MRI to see if he still had too much spinal fluid in the ventricles of his brain. So, I guess the meds are working the way they are supposed to (but I cannot say that his sight is any better). He LOVES to be outside, playing and playing. Sometimes when we take him in he fusses and cries, but then we put him down by his water dish or food dish and he focuses on water/food. When I say that he "fusses," he makes a lot of noise, and then he cries, and then he stops. He's never wanted to bite any of us; my husband says he "throws a tantrum." I'd say wanting to stay out and play forever and ever and guarding his food dish are his ONLY "issues" other than his sight problem. I did give him a complete bath once--and I think he should be sedated for a bath. He loves to play in water outside--sprinkler system or his water dish--but a soap bath all over is frightening to him. He has in-the-sink with sprayer underbelly, feet, legs, and butt baths--doesn't like them, but endures them. Buffalo is such a loving puppy--cuddly and he loves to be petted, have his tummy scratched, and his ears scratched especially. He's as cute as can be and loves to show off leaping and bouncing--he almost turns cartwheels. I am pretty sure that everything unfamiliar is still a problem for him, so he has to get used to "things" being where they are, but he loves all people. He has learned, "No," and "Buffalo come," and "careful!" or "easy, Buffalo!"--meaning that there is something he cannot see and he might consider changing direction--bushes or an incline or step or something. While he turns flips outside, he has to relearn walking on slick surfaces every time he encounters them--floors, tiles, newspapers even. When I look at what I've written, I realize what a special person it would take to keep Buffalo moving in an optimum direction and to commit to his care and who wouldn't be afraid to receive his love in return. I've talked with my vet about this; we have a goal of Buffalo being a loving pet for someone--someone who will be firm with him when he cannot have his way--and who will be loving and affectionate, too. You can actually fall into those big, pretty brown eyes. His soul is so easy to touch; it's like falling in love…."

Update 11/10/2014: We've received this update from Buffalo's owners and they're getting worried as winter is approaching. They're elderly and do not believe they'll be able to physically handle Buffalo through the winter. Her husband is already having difficulty caring for Buffalo due to his own health.
"Buffalo keeps on improving. Although a "mini," he's about 30 pounds (and could get up to 35 or 40) and beyond my ability to lift him any more. He's a loving boy. No seizures or anything like that. STILL protective of his food dish if he thinks anyone else around might be hungry. STILL wants to have his own way--like any kid. Still exploring and memorizing the property here. Today, we are snow-free; tomorrow, there will be snow. We enjoy day-by-day, but the time really is critical."

Tye - Staying With Owner

Name: Tye
Age: 8 years
Breed: Yorkshire Terrier
Sex: Male (altered)
Location: Altoona, PA area

Vet Info: Tye is confirmed neutered and current on vaccines. He is next due for bordetella, rabies, and distemper vaccines in September, 2014. He is heartworm negative and on preventative, and has been a client at this vet since 2009. Tye has been prescribed 1/2 to 1 Prozac daily for anxiety. He weighs about 18 pounds.

Owner Info: DOB 4/4/2006. Tye is an adorable Yorkshire Terrier who has recently been diagnosed with SARDS. He is completely blind. He's also started having more accidents inside. They've tried everything, but his owners don't feel they're able to give Tye the time and patience he needs and deserves and are very much hoping for rescue. They believe his blindness was the start of his accidents. Tye was originally purchased from a breeder and they've had him for seven years. He's an indoor dog confined to one area of the house, he is housebroken (but has been having accidents) and leash trained. Tye is good with people of all ages, cats and other small animals, and female dogs. He did once show aggression to a male Bernese Mountain Dog who was getting excited around him, and "Tye didn't like it" so nipped at him. Tye is not possessive of toys, treats, or food. His owners say that he doesn't like to be left alone in his crate and will get anxious and bark. Other than the SARDS, his owners write that "Tye is an overall healthy dog. There are no other illnesses that we are aware of." They want us to know that Tye is a real sweetheart! They write, "Tye is a very sweet dog and gets along with everyone. We really hate to see him put down for this but this is our last option."

Chewy - In Memory

Name: Chewy
Age: 11 years
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Basenji
Location: Charlotte, NC

Vet Info: Chewy is confirmed neutered and weighs 32 pounds. He is completely blind and partially deaf. He is heartworm negative. He is current with all vaccinations and microchipped. He is on Soloxine for his thyroid.

Owner Info: Chewy is an adorable Basenji whose owners have decided to re-home him because they can no longer meet his needs. Chewy suffers from hypothyroidism and needs constant access to water and the outdoors so he can relieve himself. Chewy’s owner works very long hours and is not able to take him outside every couple of hours. They feel that Chewy needs a home with a fenced yard due to his urinary incontinence so he can have freedom to exercise and play outdoors. Chewy has been with his owners almost his whole life. He is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house; he is housebroken and leash-trained. Chewy’s owner described him as good with men, women, and teenagers, as well as cats and female dogs. He said since losing his eyesight within the past two months, he has been very confused. He has nipped at a friend once when the friend pushed him out of his corner of the couch but it was “nothing major.” Chewy's owner also says that Chewy has extreme anxiety issues and doesn't do well in a crate. Chewy’s owner says, “This will be one of the hardest things that I have had to do in my life , my wife and I love him so much but because of love we feel that finding a good home for him is the best and unselfish thing to do.”

Basil - In BDRA Foster Care

Name: Basil
Age: Estimated 6 years
Breed: Mixed Breed
Sex: Female (not altered)
Location: Knoxville/Johnson City, TN area

Vet Info: Basil has not been vetted. She weighs approximately 45 pounds.

Owner Info: Basil is a beautiful and very sweet girl who was found under a shed behind an apartment complex. Her caregiver is moving July 31st to an apartment that doesn't allow pets, and is not able to take Basil. Basil needs rescue before then! Her caregiver has posted flyers and has been using social media, but has had no luck in finding a new home for Basil. She has had Basil for two months and is very much hoping for a loving and caring new home for Basil. Basil is an outdoor dog without restrictions, she is housebroken and leashed trained. She is good with people of all ages (she prefers women to men but is fine with men!) and both male and female dogs. She's a smart girl, and has already learned sit and come, and is working on stay! Basil has never shown aggression and will cower on occasion when others approach. She has never bitten or snapped and is "literally the calmest dog I've ever met". She's made a lot of progress with her caregiver, who writes, "She was leash trained in three days. House broken in two weeks. When I found her as a stray, it took a month before she ate from our hands. Another week before I could get her into my apartment, which I had to trick using chicken. Starting absolutely afraid of me, after a week of living with me she won't leave my side. She's learned that our door is home so instead of walking her, as I get ready I let her out the door and she comes back in through the window within ten minutes. The second week I tried to take her to dinner and she was afraid and hiding from everyone we passed. Within a few more weeks we were celebrating the 4 of July in World's Fair Park with thousands of people and fireworks, without a leash, and had zero problems."  Basil may have some health issues and her caregiver can not afford to take her to a vet, although she may be able to split the cost. Her caregiver says that Basil eats and drinks double the amount of any other dog she's had, and she's not sure, but Basil may have respiratory problems. When she runs, she squeaks but not like asthma. She makes thick sounds constantly while breathing. It sounds as if her lungs are punctured or her windpipe damaged in some way."  Basil's caregiver is not 100% sure she's visually impaired, but thinks she may be. She writes, "She doesn't respond to much and she sniffs everywhere she goes. If you move in front of her she doesn't react either. Also she always likes to have her back against something (a wall, a chair, my leg, etc.). I'm not sure that she is, but it's a possibility". Her caregiver wants us to know, "She seems to have had a rough life so far and I would really really like to see her go to a great and loving home. I think she would be wonderful for small children, the elderly, or mentally handicapped. She is so patient and calm. After a few weeks I started testing her before putting up any posts or taking her into public so I lightly ran into her, flicked her, pushed her in certain places, bit her, etc. and she only reacted with whimpers in places I assume are already damaged. There was never violent responses. I had a friend pretend to break in to see how protective she is: she isn't."

Dawkins - Adopted

Name: Dawkins
Age: 5 years
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Beagle
Location: Atlantic City, NJ area

Vet Info: Dawkins is confirmed neutered. He is next due for his rabies vaccine on 7/19/16, and for his distemper vaccine on 8/19/15. He is heartworm negative. Dawkins weighs about 30 pounds.

Owner Info: Dawkins' current owners got him from his previous owners who was had posted Dawkins for. Unfortunately, they are also unable to keep him because they now realize that "having a blind dog that was never obedience trained when he could see was beyond our capabilities. We just want to place him where he can get the best care possible." They add that they've only had him for a month, and "he's just too much for us to handle due to his condition." They do note that he can see shadows during the day only. Dawkins is currently staying at a friend's house because she has a yard. Dawkins is an indoor dog with run of the house, and he is housebroken. His current owners tell us he is not leash trained. He is good with men and women and both male and female dogs. Other than his blindness and being overweight, Dawkins appears to be healthy and has no problems with his coat, ears, teeth, or digestive system. Dawkins can be possessive of food around her friend's other dog (a mastiff), but the dogs have no problems at any other time. When asked if the dog has ever bitten or snapped, they write, "The other day the two dogs got into a small quarrell over food and my friend's dog bit him on the face. My friend attempted to calm him and clean his wound and he growled and bit her." His current owners also wrote that he's been very affectionate with their friend and fiance. We asked for more details about why Dawkins is too much for them, and they say, "He's been getting into the toilet and trash but mostly its his food aggression with the other dog who is also being aggressive first when it comes to food. They otherwise get along and he is usually well behaved. He does sometimes go to the bathroom in the house after he was walked."

Lucy - Staying With Owner

Name: Lucy
Age:10 years
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Great Dane
Location: Near Columbus, Ohio

Vet Info: Lucy is up to date on her shots. She is spayed and heartworm negative. She is healthy and blind (the vet is not sure of the reason for her blindness). She can't see well so is snappy but is mostly a "typical Great Dane."

Owner Info: The owners got Lucy three years ago from their granddaughter. The granddaughter rescued Lucy and kept her for a while, but has moved to a place that does not allow dogs. The current owners are an older couple and now are not able to care for such a large dog. Lucy weighs 110 pounds and is ten years old. Lucy is an indoor dog who is housebroken and leash trained. She knows the following commands: rest, sit, stay and here. She is nervous and has nipped at one of the owners who reached down to pet her. She also bit one of the owners when she was trying to get a harness on her. The owner wrote the following about Lucy: "She needs to be with someone kind and patient. She was very dependent on my granddaughter and it took her a bit to transfer to me. She mainly follows me around, sort of like having a two year old in the house except when she is asleep (which is a lot of the time). When I take her outside she just sticks by me. The only time she has been off our property was when she was tracking me (I had left her in the house and gone to a neighbor's, and then my husband let her out). Sometimes I feel like I have to stay around so that she eats or pees or whatever as she gets anxious when she doesn't know where I am. Her favorite thing is riding in the car, and she likes to be brushed. Her annoying habits are chewing (her dog bed cover and the dog hammock in the car) and barking when she hears something like a horn or knocking on the TV. Our other dogs don't like her. I guess they are afraid because she is so big. She is not at all aggressive with them, but they growl at her. But she has a fine time playing with my sister's small corgi who is feisty and keeps on teasing her. My daughter kept her with her cat and I think Lucy never figured out that there was a cat around. Squirrels run right in front of her and she doesn't see them. So I think she could be with other animals." Lucy would be best in a home with no small children.

Update 8/23/2014: Lucy's owner said that Lucy recently spent time with her daughter, and Lucy got along great with the kittens that were there! Also, she said the vet thinks Lucy is younger than 9 or 10 years old.

Quincy - Staying With Owner

Name: Quincy
Age: 10-11 years
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Chihuahua
Location: Queens, NY

Vet Info: Quincy is confirmed neutered and we are waiting for info about his vaccines.  Quincy has not been heartworm tested.  He weighs about 9 pounds.

Owner Info: Quincy is a poor fellow in a heartbreaking situation.  Quincy is blind and paralyzed (he cannot move his back legs), and his owner has to start working long hours in order to support himself.   His owner doesn't want Quincy to be starving or thirsty for most of the day.  He has really struggled and has tried very hard to keep Quincy, but unfortunately, he cannot.  He has made the very difficult decision to euthanize Quincy if a new home or rescue cannot be found before September.  As long as Quincy has eaten and had a drink, his owner feels he can go five or six hours alone.  Quincy loves to be in someone's lap or in his pouch, and will adapt very well as long has he has his pouch, a lap, and his wheelchair!  Quincy is paralyzed due to unsuccessful disc surgery, and had one eye removed due to injury.  He has a cataract in his remaining eye.  His owner notes that he doesn't want to walk now that he is blind, and has recently gone completely blind.  Quincy does not like to be in his wheelchair for long periods, but his owner does put him in his wheelchair to relieve himself and to stretch.  If not in his wheelchair, he can crawl dragging his back legs, but not far.  His owner has had Quincy for 9 years.  Quincy currently lives in the garage that has been transformed into a "huge dog palace", with the owner's other dogs.  He's a typical chihuahua, and is "rebellious by nature" and may growl, especially when he feels his food his threatened (he loves food!) and the other dogs get too close.  Since he's had Quincy, his owner says that Quincy has become "more mellow".  He is not housebroken, but can poop on his own.  He can urinate on his own, and may urinate in his pouch or wheelchair, but may also need to be expressed.  His owner says that he drinks a lot.  His owner wants us to know that Quincy is a special and happy fellow!  "All I can say is that my little dog has suffered more than his share and still doesn't show any sorrow or sadness. a huge fighter."  His owner also tells us that Quincy is the smartest dog he's ever had!   Quincy is a very special boy and a typical chihuahua - a little dog with a big personality!

Cooper is an indoor dog with run of the house and he is leash trained.  He is good with people of all ages, both male and female dogs, and cats!  He is not possessive of toys, treats, or food and has never shown any aggression.  She writes that he is a loving giant!  He is absolutely adorable!
