Bert-Adopted

Name: Bert
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Pug
Age: 8 ½ years
Location: Roslindale, MA

Vet/Medical Info:
Bert is a neutered male, DOB 4/1/2003. Bert was given Rabies & DHPP vaccines (both 3 yrs) on 6/25/2011 and he was given 1 yr Lyme shot on 7/11/2007. He has received Iverhart HW preventative and was HW negative at 6/26/2009. On 6/1/2010 Bert was diagnosed with SARDS in both eyes, distichia left upper eyelid. T3 slightly low but T4 normal. He has mild tartar and gingivitis, waxy ear discharge and prominent nasal folds. Prescribed Anipryl, Prednisone and L-Thyroxine, he is now only on L-Thyroxine. He is doing well.

Owner Info: Bert’s owner has a toddler and newborn and is no longer able to take care of him. She got Bert and his brother Ernie when they were 8 weeks old. Her decision to surrender Bert has been an agonizing one, she would like to keep Ernie as he does not need as much time spent with him as Bert. They are very bonded so it will be hard for Bert at first being separated from his brother and family. Bert is a very sweet boy, very friendly, loves people and other animals. He loves to greet people at the door. When Bert is walked off leash he is like a social butterfly with other dogs, on a leash he tends to bark at other dogs but it's just because he want to say hi. He is very gentle with kids but does jump on new people when he first meets them. His favorite activities are snuggling and lounging around with other people. He has have never lived with anyone other than his current family so they don't know how Bert will adjust. He has been very loved their whole lives. Bert's eyes look normal but he is blind, he suffered from SARDS about a year and a half ago. Bert is on L-thyroxin and has just been weaned off the Prednizone. There was a small chance he could regain his sight with these meds, but he didn't. When they tried to wean him from both of them he got very senile and disoriented. This is a very sad and hard decision but she feels it is the best thing for her family.

Kenji - Status Unknown

Name: Kenji
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Hound Mix
Age: 2 years
Location: Pontotoc, MS

Vet/Medical Info: Kenji is neutered, they have no record of HW test or doing any vaccines. He was there in March for sores on his ears, treated for ear mites and put on Cephalexin, back on April 16th, ears still not better. They said he has ongoing ear sores and problems with ears. Asked if he ever exhibited odd behavior or had any other issues, and they said nothing was noted.
Owner Info: Kenji's owner has been looking for someone to give him a home for a couple of months, ever since she knew she had to move. She looked for a place that would allow her to keep him but could not find one. She took him to a rescue recently but they could not keep him for long and he hardly ate, barked all the time and showed some very odd and distressed behavior. She went and got him back and he is currently staying with friends short term. Kenji is a wonderful dog. The shelter said he has a condition called Collie Eye Anomolie and he was probably born blind. He is housebroken and leash trained and is just a good boy. He gets on well with people and other dogs. He does bark a lot when he is around a lot of noise or excitement, she thinks it is because he doesn't know what is going on. When he is inside and it is calm he will lay down and never bothers anything. Kenji would be best suited as an only dog or with just one or two other dogs around. His owner would do anything to be able to keep him, but can't find a new home that allows bigger dogs. Owner has said he is up to date with vaccinations and HW negative but we have been unable to verify this.

Kars - Staying With Owner

Name: Kars
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Dachshund/Rat Terrier Mix
Age: 15 months
Location: Austin, TX

Vet/Medical Info: Kars received all his vaccinations including rabies on 10/23/10. He is due next 10/23/11. He was too young to be tested for heartworm but the owner purchased the preventative meds, neutered 1/6/2011.
Owner Info: Kars's owner found him when he was a puppy, she has become ill and can no longer care for him and her daughter is looking after Kars temporarily, but is unable to keep him because he chases her cats. Kars can be possessive with toys and food. He's nervous with large groups of people, but does well with people he knows. It is unknown if Kars is completely blind, the vet's assessment is that he was born blind but it seems that he is able to see some. Kars is in good health and other than his visual impairment, he doesn't have other special needs. Her family has considered every other option to keep Kars. They thought their mother would recover, but she has long term health problems. He would not like being an outdoor dog, he is very anxious when left outside in backyard.

Braxton - In Private Foster Care In Winston, Salem

Name: Braxton
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Rat Terrier/Jack Russell Mix
Age: 9 years
Location: Denver, NC

Vet/Medical Info: Braxton is UTD with all of his vaccinations and his next rabies is not due until 2/14. He is Heartworm negative, tested 8/11 and he is neutered. He has a grade 2 heart murmur.
Owner Info: DOB 11/15/2002. Braxton's owners have an 11 month old baby and Braxton can be snappy and aggressive at times. Most of the time, he is fine and is not bothered when the baby touches him or slaps at him, but sometimes he is startled and snaps. They know that as their son gets older, he will be rougher with the dog even if they teach him not to be. There will be times he will not listen and as he gets older, he will be faster and better able to catch Braxton. Right now, Braxton can usually get away from the baby easily, but as the baby begins to walk, they think things will change. They do not want to risk anything happening. Also, they have less time for Braxton now and would like to find someone who could give him more time. They have asked friends and family as well as their vet to see if there is anyone who would take him. Because he can be aggressive and is blind, most people do not want him. They would prefer a person they do not know to take him because this decision is very difficult and would be hard on Braxton and them if they saw him on a regular basis. Braxton has also snapped at three of their friends and bitten them. All three of these instances were more than two years ago. One was because of food, and the others were when the people were leaving their house. Before Braxton went blind, he would jump up and down at the door when anyone would leave. He would try to bite your hand as if to try to get you to stay. Since he has been blind, he has calmed down a lot and does not do that anymore. He has only shown aggression to other dogs when he was eating and another dog tried to get into his food bowl. There have been no other issues with other dogs. These days even when he is startled, he doesn't snap unless it's rough. They would not recommend Braxton for a home with children, but he's fine with all other people because they understand not to do those things.

Mia - In Mid Atlantic Pug Rescue Foster Care

Age: 7 ½ years
Location: Wethersfield, CT

Vet/Medical Info: Mia is spayed, but not UTD on vaccines. She was due for rabies 6/11/11 (she had previous rabies 6/11/08). She is not current on any meds, she needs all vaccines. Last heartworm test was done in 2008 and was negative, she was due for heartworm test in 2009. Other than Mia not being current on any vaccines, they had no other relevant medical information.
Owner Info: DOB 1/19/2004. Mia's owner has a 5 yr old, a 20 month old and is due to have another in Dec. Mia was diagnosed with SARDS one month ago. It happened overnight, she never knew a young dog could go blind. She hasn't been able to give her the love and care she needs due to the kids schedule, and come Dec it's going to get worse. She wishes she had help but her husband works crazy hours and in winter it’s worse. She loves Mia and will not give her to a kennel which is why she has been trying to find a loving home for her, she was and is her first baby and only want what's best for her. Mia is an inside dog confined to one area of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained, good with people and children of all ages, other dogs and cats.

Savannah Renee - Adopted

Name: Savannah Renee
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Cocker Spaniel
Age: 6 years
Location: Westville, IL

Vet/Medical Info: The vet Savannah Renee normally sees (Dr Wronke) has had a stroke so we are unable to get her latest medical records. The vet she saw prior to Dr Wronke was last seen in 2008, she was brought in for an abortion shot. All vaccinations and Heartworm tests were overdue. According to their records the dog was not spayed.
Owner Info: DOB 8/25/2005. Savannah Renee's owners have lost their home to foreclosure. They could not find a home to rent that would allow dogs. Savannah Renee can be a bit nervous at times but is good with people of all ages and male dogs. When they take her to get her groomed she does quite well. Unfortunately, ever since she has been blind she has a lot of potty accidents on the floor. Her owner thinks her eye condition may be genetic (she was bought from a pet store), she has only been blind the last 9-12 months. They haven't had the money to take her to the vet. Savannah has a real tough time in the heat, more than the other dogs they have. It takes her a while to stop panting when she comes in from the heat, so they are always sure to bring her in right after she has gone potty. Savannah is a very happy dog. The only place they have to take her at this time would be the pound, they are so worried if that happens they would end up putting her down. They have to be out of house by Monday 8/22/2011.
