Stella - In Great Dane Rescue of the Midwest Foster Care

Name: Stella
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Great Dane (AKC Registered)
Age: 10 months
Location: Des Plains, IL

Vet/Medical Info: At this time, Stella’s previous medical history has not been verified.

Owner Info: Stella was rescued from a high-kill shelter and taken into rescue.  The rescue does not have any foster openings and they are looking for a more stable place for Stella.  She's in an indoor dog with run of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained.  Stella gets along well with people of all ages, dogs, cats, and other small animals.  She has a detached retina/cataract in one eye, and severe glaucoma in the other.  She will need to have her eye removed and the rescue will have this done.  Stella has also had surgery on her legs, due to an injury probably related to her being crated while growing.  According to the vet, there should be no long-term issues from this.  She is also severely underweight so she was obviously not well cared for by her previous owner.

Age: 8 years approx
Location: Plain City, OH

I always give him a treat (dog biscuit) when he comes inside and he knows this :)  He gets along well with other pets and people.  Loves belly rubs, and getting dried by the hair dryer after bath time.” Also, “It looks like he has cataracts.  His eyes are white and a little filmy.  I cannot afford to take him to the vet because of my job loss and his eye condition.  It is an unfortunate situation.”

Browning - Staying With Owner

Name: Browning
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Labrador Mix
Age: 8 months
Location: Williamston, NC

Vet/Medical Info: Rabies (1 yr) given 12/12/11 so due 12/12/12.  Bordetella booster due 4/23/12.  Spay done 3/15/12.  Browning has not been hw tested, but was started on Heartgard at 5 months.  She did receive a general vision exam, but was referred to a specialist.

Owner Info: Browning was pulled from a high kill shelter in November 2011, she went directly into a foster home and has been there since. Her pupils are non-reactive, our vet stated it fit the requirements for SARDS but that she recommended us going to a specialty vet for a diagnosis. Due to funds, we were unable to take her. She stays in a wireless petsafe fence, and has a pen with a dog house. She was adopted once before and was completely housebroken. Unfortunately, the family found out they were pregnant and thought she had too much energy to stay, and she was returned. She loves going places. Browning is outgoing, can be nervous, but gets along well with adults and children and with other dogs. According to her caregiver, “Browning is a wonderful dog.  She always acts as the mother with any of my foster puppies.  She is very energetic, and very strong.  We have been fostering her since November 2011.  She has never been socialized with cats, so I am unaware of how she would do with them.  She loves my 2 year old, and follows her every where.  She has even learned how to fetch from the sound of it falling.”

Shirley - Adopted

Name: Shirley
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Pekingese
Age: 6 1/2 years
Location: Fernandina Beach, FL

Vet/Medical Info: Shirley is overdue for all vaccines. Spay has been verified.

Owner Info: Shirley’s owner has had her since she was a puppy. Shirley has a degenerative eye condition that caused her to lose her sight at 2 years of age. She is the sweetest thing ever and if she could keep her she would. This is so difficult for them but they have 2 toddlers 3 years and under, one with special needs, and he has been making Shirley's life hell. He chases, hits, kicks, and makes a lot of noises around her. They do their best to separate them but then she's by herself all day - that's no way to live. She may have to take her to a humane shelter soon if nothing pans out. Her special needs son gets out of school on May 30th. Right now he is in school Mon-Thurs till 2pm so Shirley has only her young daughter to contend with during the day. It's going to be really hard once he's out as he is very rough with her and now her daughter is hitting her terrible 2's, she follows what her brother does, no matter how much their mother corrects them. She either has to keep Shirley outside (which it's getting too hot) or in their laundry room and it's very sad for her to be alone. Shirley is an inside dog with the run of the house and is housebroken. She is leash trained and knows sit, twirl, paw, down, "help”.....she'll come running and see if you’re ok. Shirley is outgoing and does well with adults and teenagers,  other dogs and small animals. Shirley would do best in a home without small children. According to her owner “I'd like it if families with kids or plan to have kids under 5 not adopt her. Shirley isn't doing well with it now and I don't want her to go through it again. It's too much the loudness, the wildness of toddlers, and every toddler I've ever met doesn't know how to treat a dog, especially one who is blind.  She does growl at the kids, and has barked (snapped) as a warning to stop.  If she has something in her mouth, no matter who you are, she will growl and fight not to give it back, but offer her a treat and she'll drop it.  Especially paper I don't know why she likes that. Shirley is healthy and happy when not being tortured by toddlers and she loves snuggling.

Murphy's owner states, "Please help me with a foster home for Murphy.  He is a great dog and has a lot of life left in him.  He will make someone a wonderful companion!  I can't put him in a shelter - he would not do well there.  I am praying that there will be an opening for Murphy in one of your foster homes."

Duke - Adopted

Name: Duke
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Chow Chow
Age: 11 years
Location: Naugatuck, CT

Vet/Medical Info: Rabies (3 yr) and Distemper due 3/2013.  Recent HW test not done.  Neuter verified.

Owner Info: Duke is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house.  He is housebroken, leash trained, and knows the sit, be a good boy and go to the bathroom commands.  He has never gone on furniture.  Duke is good with people of all ages, other dogs, cats, and other small animals.  Duke had lived with another dog at one point and they were fine and he has been around cats and bunnies - he was good with them all.  Before he went blind he used to play at the dog park with all different dogs.  Duke had glaucoma and was given drops but they didn't reverse the problem.  He went blind and had one eye removed about 2 years ago.  Soon after, the other eye had to be removed due to pain and pressure.  At this point, we did a new procedure that took the fluid out of the eye and turned it "off."  He was seen by an eye specialist in Norwalk, CT.  He is overall healthy besides his blindness.  He underwent ACL surgery years ago but gets around fine.
