Lily - In BDRA Foster Care

Name: Lily
Sex: Female (not altered)
Breed: Black Labrador Mix
Age: 6 weeks
Location: Paw Paw, MI

Vet/Medical Info: Lily has had her first shot.  She is too young to be spayed and to have a heartworm test.
The vet noted in the records that Lily appears to be blind.  No other health information was provided,
although the vet office noted that Pam is a good owner’.

Owner Info: DOB 4/8/2012. I rescued a female black lab from the pound. She had 8 puppies – 4 choc males, 3 black males and one choc female. The pups just turned 6 weeks old, and the little female was diagnosed with retinal dysplasia. The vet said she has very little vision and could very well go blind. Lily is very sweet, and it made me sick
when my friend said we should just put her to sleep. I  just want her to have a wonderful home
where someone loves and appreciates her. Lily was placed with
a young man who didn't feel he could be there enough for her with her situation. Lily is living
indoors, confined to one area of the house. She has learnt that if she is quiet and sits, she gets
lots of loving. She is an outgoing girl and is sweet, sweet sweet,
and very cuddly. Lily seems to be very happy, she is able to find her food, and water but
because of her smaller size, she does get picked on by the other pups. I so seriously do not
want to see this sweet chocolate puppy euthanized. I have too many rescues and personal dogs
right now, or I would take her on as my personal mission.

Kota - Staying With Owner

Name: Kota
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: Border Collie
Age: 6 months
Location: Owensboro, KY

Vet/Medical Info: The vet's office said everything's been done for this puppy.  He has had his rabies and distemper and they are due again in June 2013.  He has not yet been neutered or tested for heartworm because of his age, but his owner just bought a 6 month supply of HW preventitive.  His health is
within normal limits with the exception that the right eye is permanently malformed and both eyes are very small.  The vet's records state that the owner says he is blind”.  No testing has been done on the eyes.

Owner Info: Kota is a foster dog that needs a permanent foster/rescue. His breeder sold him as a puppy to someone without telling them he was blind; they were going to get a refund on him but his current caregivers took him instead. They felt previous owner or breeder were not an option due to
irresponsibility. Kota is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house, he is not yet housebroken but is leash trained. He knows the commands sit, down and stay. His caregiver is a dog trainer and also took him through a puppy class for socialization and to overcome fear of different
floor/ground textures. Kota is an outgoing boy, he is good with people of all ages including children and good with other dogs and cats. At ten weeks of age Kota was food aggressive but he quickly overcame this and he no longer shows any signs of food aggression toward people or animals.
He takes some time to adjust to new surroundings but adapts well.  Vet believes he was born blind and it was a congenital condition, he has not seen a specialist for any other diagnosis. Aside from his blindness, Kota seems to be in perfect health.

Sissy - In Memory

Name: Delta Duchess (Sissy)
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Pit Bull Terrier
Age: 8 years
Location: Cottondale, FL

Vet/Medical Info: Sissy is spayed and utd on vaccines. She’s next due 8/14/2012 for rabies, and the distemper, lepto, parvo combine vaccine. They have no record of heartworm testing. Other than glaucoma, she is in good health. They had no other relevant medical information.

Owner Info: Sissy is an indoor dog who is crated, she is not housebroken.  She is outgoing and gets along well with men, women, teenagers, and male dogs. She’s a very smart girl and knows  the come, stay, sit, down, relax and release commands. According to the vet she has glaucoma, left eye worse than right. She is able to see somewhat out of her left eye, although the degree is unknown. Her right eye vision is good. Other than the glaucoma, her general health is good. Due to life circumstances, Sissy’s owner can no longer afford her medication. Strange sounds or load noises scare her momentarily, but as long as she knows everything is alright she will do fine. Her tail wags constantly and she loves to kiss, kiss, kiss. One of her nicnames is kissy sissy. Sissy is a digger, so she needs close supervision. Sissy’s owner would like her to go to a loving home where she's kept indoors, with an outside fenced area, and who has the time and resources to work with her.

Vet/Medical Info: History is unknown so we are unable to verify medical info.

Alfie - In Memory

Name: Alfie
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Affenpinscher
Age: 11 years
Location: Las Vegas, NV
Vet/Medical Info: Alfie is utd on vaccines, due for rabies 12/22/14 and distempter on 12/22/12. They have no record of any heartworm testing done. He is neutered, and diabetes appears to be well controlled with three units every 12 hours (from 12/11 - insulin dosage could have increased since then).  Alfie weighs about 15 pounds.

Owner Information: Alfie's owner is relocating to Boston on Tuesday 6/19, and his new apartment does not accept pets.  He needs to find placement THIS WEEK and is EXTREMELY URGENT. Alfie’s owner is willing to pay for air transport for Alfie, and has already done research into what this will entail. He's a loving and sweet boy and his owner is desperately hoping he can be placed this week. Alfie is an indoor dog with the run of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained. He does wear a belly band because if he finds himself cornered in the house he may get nervous and mark. Alfie has cataracts as a result of diabetes, but he can have surgery to remove the cataracts. Alfie is shy at first but loves people. Has been spoiled since being with his owner, but never takes anything for granted. He's low key, quiet temper, sleeps, eats, and loves!!!   Alfie is fine with other dogs that he meets. Being blind he gets anxious if they are overly aggressive with him and will give a snap, but this is all he does.

Poppy - Staying With Owner

Name: Poppy
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Puggle
Age: 6 years
Location: Pasadena, CA

Vet/Medical Info: Poppy is spayed and was found heartworm negative in April of 2011. She has been on preventative at least through April 2012 according to the vet’s records. She is overdue for a HW test. She is up to date on her shots; her rabies is due in 2014, and distemper and bordatella are due again this August. Poppy had her left eye removed and the retina has detached in her right eye. She is in good health as far as the vet’s office can tell from the records, and Poppy’s owner has brought her in regularly for care.

Owner Info: Our dog Poppy is fully blind from a trauma. In late July 2010, this dog (whom I'd never seen before) jumped in between the front and rear wheels of the car driving in front of me. The car didn’t run her over, it hit the brakes. Her head was caught between the left rear tire and the pavement. She scuttled away essentially uninjured (some scratches to foot and chin that have left no impairment) but her eyes were popping out of her head. I called the Pasadena Humane Society, who quickly took her to their shelter where a veterinarian removed her left eye. The right eye is in its socket, but the veterinary ophthalmologist confirmed no vision in the right eye through electro- neurologic testing and ultrasound of the eye globe, which revealed a complete retinal detachment. Her eye pressures have always been normal. We put a steroid drip in her eye each day for about a year, then alternated daily between a steroid drop and a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drop (Diclofenac) for about 6 months, and finally we now just put Diclofenac in her eye Monday through Friday. My wife and I recently had our first baby (8 weeks ago). We are concerned our dog may accidentally jump on furniture where the baby is or when the baby starts crawling or walking and bumps into or steps on the dog or pulls its tail playfully, Poppy may nip at the baby. Our experienced and well connected dog trainer/babysitter/boarder has reached out to local persons and organizations and was unable to find someone to rehome Poppy. My wife’s aunt was interested in adopting Poppy, but her home is undergoing extensive remodeling after a flood from a burst water pipe. It is important to rehome Poppy before our son is able to crawl and accidentally bumps into the dog in some manner that startles her. Poppy in an indoor dog with the run of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained. She is mircochipped. She knows commands such as Come, Go, Stay, Stop, Easy (slow down), Up, Down, Sit and Shake. Poppy is good with adults and other dogs. Poppy barks at some people (not all, we can't figure out the pattern). She barks at other dogs, almost entirely only when meeting them one on one. Does great with male and female dogs at the dog park and the more populated doggy day care we often send her to. That is to say, when she's around many other dogs, she does very well. Twice, recently, at a less crowded doggy day care, she nipped at another dog there. This has never happened at the more populated doggy day care. Poppy has amazing senses of smell and hearing and an excellent memory. She is very smart. Within two days of adopting her from the shelter to our home, she was climbing up and down stairs, she knew where the furniture was. She navigates so well people are shocked to hear she's blind. When we move furniture around, she navigates right around it, although its a new configuration.
When she meets a new person (e.g., many guests at a party), she often barks a few minutes but then calms down.
