Mr Cooper - Adopted

Name: Mr. Cooper
Sex: Male (altered per owner)
Breed: White GSD Mix
Age: 2 1/2 years (DOB 11/09)
Location: Hampton, VA

Vet/Medical Info: Mr. Cooper is confirmed neutered, but was due in April, 2012,  for all vaccines.  Mr. Cooper's owner has an appointment for his vaccines shortly and will update us once he's up to date.  She says he's in overall good health.

Owner Info: Mr. Cooper's owner just had one child and that limited her time with Mr. Cooper significantly. They just found out they are pregnant with #2.  She feels that she is not able to give him the time he deserves and he is a very good dog who deserves more than they can give. He is loving to those he gets to know and just all around kind. She's tried Craig's List and Facebook with no luck, and they love him and want to make sure he goes to a good home, not just ANY home.  Mr. Cooper is an outdoor dog with a fenced yard.  He is not housebroken, but he is leash trained.  He knows sit, stay, and down, if you have a treat!  They tried obedience training with him when he was a pup, but the noises frightened him, so they stopped after three sessions.  Mr. Cooper is a shy dog, and is good with women, and both male and female dogs. His owner says that because of his eye sight issues, he is not a playful, social animal, and he can have issues being around different people that he is not used to.  He is not possessive with toys, treats, or food.  However, because he was scared, his owner notes that he tried to nip at the vet when they put the muzzle on him to take him back for a bath for the first time. He's a timid dog, and will usually run and hide when frightened, but barks fiercely.   She does say he seems to be frightened of most things. Mr. Cooper was born with juvenile cataracts and the vet said he "sees like looking through a kaleidoscope", otherwise he is in good health.  Mr. Cooper's owner believes he'd do best with a couple or single person without kids. He is good with children he has grown with, but not children who come into his environment.

Spot - Staying With Owner

Name: Spot
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Jack Russell Terrier
Age: 6 years
Location: Brewster, MA

Vet/Medical Info: Spot is confirmed neutered and utd on rabies, lyme, and distemper.  He is next due
for those vaccines on 4/26/2013.  They had no record of any recent heartworm
testing.  They will call back if they find any other info... the girl who's been working
with Spot was out to lunch.

Owner Info: Spot's owner currently has a total of 3 rescues in her home. She is
disabled and sorry to say that she cannot provide the one-on-one care that Spot
requires. She pulled him from CL's last April, to save him from a worse situation,
and has invested a lot in having him evaluated with an opthamologist and treating
him with doggie prozac to try to help him with his fear aggression. He is better, but
continues to turn on her other two companions. Her other JRT has suffered a
herniated disc, she is not sure if it was as a result of an altercation with Spot, but it
certainly is a possibility. She loves this little mush, he is so adorable and sweet, and
loves to play and is as gentle as a lump of dough when you handle him. It is only
when a stranger or anyone approaches the fence to come to the property that he
loses it and becomes wild. She cannot continue to struggle with trying to fund his
surgery. Both eyes have cataracts, she got him after his blindness occurred. He is a
candidate for surgery, 90% chance of full recovery of vision. She is maintaining his
chances for surgery with twice daily anti inflammatory drops and hope to hear
someday that he has been lucky and will see again. It breaks her heart that she will
not be the one who gives this to him directly, but he deserves every chance he can
get. Spot is an inside dog with the run of the house, he is housebroken and leash
trained and knows the commands sit, stay and come. He is obedient and compliant,
he loves to please and always tries to do so. He is an outgoing boy, good with
people and children of all ages. Spot would probably do best as an only dog. His fear
aggression is an issue when he is surprised, his owner feels this is completely due to
his blindness. He is totally at ease when he is sure of his environment. He more than
anything tries to make a racket and warn off any interlopers. His demeanor is quite
ferocious, but his need is to be assured that everything is ok. She simply does not
have the energy to cope with his need for one on one care. He accepts new people
easily, he simply needs to know that they are friend, not foe. He is protective of his
home and guardian. However, never has he been aggressive towards vet, or techs.
Spot is lovely, playful and delights in discovery of a toy that he recognizes. He is
wonderful and smart and wants only to please. If his sight were restored, she feels
confident she could keep him. However, he deserves a companion who can provide
either one on one with him as he is, or someone who can afford to give him the
surgery.

Cha Cha - In Memory

Name: Cha Cha
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Chihuahua
Age: 8 years
Location:Rowland Heights, CA

Vet/Medical Info: Cha Cha weighs seven pounds and is spayed.   Cha Cha is next due for her rabies vaccine in June, 2013.

Owner Info: Cha Cha's owner is a full-time student who is no longer able to give Cha Cha the time or attention she deserves.  Cha Cha is an indoor dog with run of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained, and knows "sit".  Cha Cha is good with men, women, and teenagers.  Cha Cha's owner says that she shows aggression towards puppies because as they try to play with her, her disability prevents her from knowing what's going on, which causes her to be defensive.  When Cha Cha's owners leave for an extended period, Cha Cha does very well at their friend's home, with their family and children.  Her owner says that both eyes have been diagnosed with cataracts, however, the right eye seems to be completely blind and the left eye is not as severe, but has showings of it.  Her owner also notes that Cha Cha does have some other medical issues.  Due to a break, she had a plate inserted into her back leg when she was a puppy.  She also has an enlarged heart and a pinched nerve in her back, but this has not bothered her in two years.  Cha Cha has become a bit more timid since the cataracts, but she loves to give lots and lots of kisses! Even after meeting a new person, Cha Cha is well-known for her kisses!

Shelby - In BDRA Foster Care

Name: Shelby
Sex: Female (not altered)
Breed: Border Collie
Age: 6 years approximately
Location: Winterville, NC

Vet/Medical Info: Shelby has only been to this vet a few times, but they were able
to say she's up to date with vaccines, although could not give info as to when they're
next due, as the vaccines were given elsewhere. Shelby is not spayed. She is
heartworm negative confirmed by a heartworm test given 6/19/12.  Shelby is
diabetic.  They had no other relevant medical information.

Owner Info: Shelby was found on the side of the road, she is now being cared for  by the daughterof the people that found her. Her husband doesn't want a pet and
she cannot continue to take care of her financially, especially with her being diabetic.
Shelby hascataracts, she bumps into walls. They believe she has limited peripheral
vision and think the diabetes may be the cause of blindness. She has a wonderful
temperament.  They have contacted local animal shelters and they are all full, they
have asked church folks, neighbors, etc. if they would be willing to take her in, but
with her being blind and diabetic they have been unwilling to consider. Shelby is an
indoor dog confined to one area of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained.
Shelby knows commands such as sit and come. She is extremely well behaved,
rarely barks and never in the house. She is good with people and children of all
ages, good with other dogs, cats and small animals. Shelby recently moved from a
very large pen at her current carers parent's home where she stayed outdoors, to
inside her current home. She has adapted very well, was nervous with steps going into
the house at first, but isn't anymore. She does not go upstairs though. She is a
very sweet dog. She's great with kids, and one would hardly know she is in the
house. Perfect for one who doesn't want a dog to take over their home.

Hercules - Adopted

Name: Hercules
Sex: Male (altered - per owner)
Breed: Pit Bull Heeler mix
Age: 2 1/2 years
Location: Cedar Park, TX

Vet/Medical Info: Hercules is neutered, up to date on vaccines, and heartworm negative, per his owner.  Hercules weighs 50 pounds.
Owner Info:  Hercules's owner needs to find him a new home for two reasons. First, her landlord is set on not allowing him to stay in her home because he is a pit mix. Secondly, she cannot afford to take him to a vet and he needs help. Every day one of his eyes fully dilates while the other one doesn't. If not, they seem puffy and swollen. She knows it affects his sight because he seems more scared at night and will bark more at noises.  During the day he sometimes seems startled to realize someone was beside him and may growl.  He will also snap when it's night time and he is sleeping and you wake him up.  He has bitten her when he is startled, but has never torn skin.  She believes it's more like a warning.  She has held on to him as long as she can, trying to find him help, but now her landlord said if he doesn't go then they have to move. She is a single mom with 6 kids, one of her boys is quite ill, and she can't afford to move.  She has tried several local rescues with no luck.   Hercules is an indoor dog with run of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained.  When he is walked, he loves to have people give him attention!  He knows "sit", "down", and even tries to give his paw sometimes!  According to his owner, he is good with men, women, and children, and both male and female dogs, but has been more easily startled lately.   His owner says that he is an awesome dog.   Her children have even painted his toenails!  He can be a bit hyper at times, but he loves being around people. What ever the kids do he is usually in the middle of it too, although recently if the kids play and get too loud, he seems scared and will get in the middle and growl.  Currently, he is not allowed to sleep in anyone's room, be on the couch, and he gets put up in the kennel when kids are playing in the house. His owner knows he feels the difference, and says he seems sad and confused and unsure if it's OK to be by you anymore when he approaches.  She thinks that he would do best in a home with another dog for companionship, otherwise he would have a hard time being left alone.  His owner says that if she were able, she would rather move than rehome him.

Ellie - In Therapets, Indiana Rescue

Name: Ellie
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Cairn Terrier
Age: 10 years
Location: Aurora, CO

Vet/Medical Info: Ellie is spayed.  She is up to date on bordatella (next due 12/19/2012) and distemper (next due 6/23/14), but is just now overdue for her rabies vaccine (due 7/2/12).  She is diabetic and is currently under-regulated, so she is going through a series of glucose curves to help regulate her insulin.  She is heartworm negative and is due for her next heartworm test in May, 2013.  Ellie weighs 22 pounds.

Owner Info: DOB 7/25/2002. Ellie recently lost her sight and is having great difficulty getting around her owners' house because it's full of stairs.  Both of them work and so she's left home alone most of the day. She needs more companionship/taking care of now that she's blind.  They describe her as substantially blind, with milky colored dark eyes. They've contacted numerous local no-kill shelters, with no luck.  Ellie is an indoor dog with run of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained.  Ellie knows "sit", "come", "stay," and "outside".  Ellie is good with men, women, and children, and both male and female dogs.  She is not possessive of treats, toys, or food, and has never shown any aggression.  Ellie has diabetes that went undiagnosed for a few months, which they think led to her eventual blindness.  Her diabetes has been controlled with twice daily insulin (11 units) and a weight control diet.  She is otherwise healthy.  Ellie's owners are hoping for a situation where somebody needs and wants a good, loving companion that happens to be blind. Ellie is still friendly and finds her away around by feel, smell and sound, of course. Their schedule and house set up just aren't conducive.
