Scar - In BDRA Foster Care

Name: Scar
Age: Approximately 2 years
Breed: Hanging Tree Cow Dog
Sex: Male (altered)
Location: Hornell, NY area

Vet Info: Scar is confirmed neutered and up to date on vaccines.  He is next due for the rabies vaccine in March, 2016, and for the distemper vaccine in March of 2014.  He has not been recently heartworm tested.  Scar weighs about 60 pounds.

Owner Info: Scar lives on a working farm and his owner says that it is getting dangerous for him as he still tries to work the cattle.  He also runs into the machinery, and she is afraid he is going to hurt himself.  She has asked everyone she knows, but she's been unable to find a new home for Scar.  Scar is an outdoor dog without restrictions, he is housebroken and leash trained.  He knows "come" and "crate".  Scar is good with women and other dogs, and his owner wrote, "he is good with men just doesn't trust them he listens to my boyfriend but isn't 'friendly' with him", and she says he doesn't seem to mind the cat.   He does chase the cows, pigs, and goat.  Scar has never bitten or snapped and is not possessive of toys, treats, or food.  Scar came from an abusive home and may be slow to warm up.  His owner says, "He adjusts once he trusts someone he came from an abusive home before us so he really needs a person to trust."  He can see movement and may see objects clearly, but his pupils stay dilated and he will run into you if you are standing still.  Scar is missing part of his lip but this doesn't affect him at all.  She just cleans his teeth off for him.  Other than that, she says that he is in great health! His owner adds, "He is a sweetheart. Once he trusts you he wants to be with you and play. He loves my 3 yr old son. He is good in the house but i have not had him in alot. Once he gets used to a situation and a place he is really good. I love him I just dont want to see him get hurt. He needs more time then i can give him."

Update 4/12/14: We heard from Scar's owner today. He is doing very well and still needs a new home. And he loves his owner's four year old! Scar would be a great family dog!

Update 7/21/2014: OS has received this message from Scar's owner today and he is now extremely urgent!  “Has there been any interest in Scar?  If not I am going to have to put him to sleep he killed a piglet today and although he is great w dogs and cats he is getting horrible w the livestock because he can't see them. Thank you.”

Rocky - Adopted

Name: Rocky
Age: 2 years
Breed: Rhodesian Ridgeback Mix
Sex: Male (not altered)
Location: Fort Worth, TX area

Vet Info: His owner says he is up to date on vaccines and that he is completely blind in his right eye, and "his left eye is on the way".  Likely cause is cataracts.  Rocky weighs about 80 pounds.

Owner Info (from email received): I have a facebook friend from my high school that is in a tough situation with her dog, Rocky.  The vet told her he is going blind. He's a two year old Rhodesian Ridgeback mix and has been an outside dog. Good with kids (has been around toddlers) and other pets. Unaltered. His owner is a caregiver to two seriously ill people and is unequipped to manage this as well. She feels her only option is to put him to sleep. She doesn't feel she can help him through his transition, and she has a lot of other pressing human problems on her plate.  She has been unsuccessful in finding a rescue, and plans to have him put down on Friday.

Update 11/7:  Rocky is still in need and there has not been any interest.  He has another week to find a home or rescue.  His owner told us: “There hasn't been a single contact for anyone, much less someone wanting to take him.  I called his vet.  He said it looked like juvenile cataracts. He's only seeing shadows in his right eye.  Would need to get him to an opthamologist to see if there are options.  Rocky has two other dogs with him in the backyard right now.”

Update 11/14: The person who contacted us will be getting Rocky tomorrow, and he'll head to boarding for now.  Please continue to share so he can find rescue or an adoptive home!

Billy - Adopted

Name: Billy
Age: Senior
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Labrador Mix
Location: Cookeville, TN area

Vet Info: Billy is confirmed neutered and up to date on vaccines.  He is heartworm positive and has begun treatment through the vet clinic.   He weighs approximately 50 pounds.

Owner Info: Billy came into a vet clinic as a stray, and they are all working together to find him a home or rescue!   They have been unable to find an owner.  Billy is an indoor dog and is housebroken and leash trained.  He is good with both men and women and is not possessive of toys, treats, or food.  However, he has shown aggression to other dogs, which they feel is a result of his blindness.  They write, "Billy does not seem to like other dogs, but I think it is more of a function of his being blind. All of a sudden he just feels another animal next to him, and since he can't see it, he feels endangered. When we tested Billy with other dogs, he snapped at the other dog. We had both dogs on leashes and were able to pull them away from each other before an altercation occurred."  Billy's blindness may not be 100%, but he is very near that.  The cause of his blindness is not known, but he does not appear to have any eye injuries.  They write, "Despite his eye problems and heartworms, Billy seems to be in overall good health otherwise. He eats well, goes to the bathroom regularly, and is pretty active for a senior dog."  They add that transport help is available.

Update 11/20: SUPER URGENT!!! WILL BE PTS 11/22!!! This sweet boy is Billy Bones. He is looking for someone with a great big heart to take him in!! Unfortunately, this fella is older, blind, and is heartworm positive. If you could open up your home and your heart to let Billy live comfortably in someone's loving arms, it would be the most rewarding experience of your life! Older dogs don't have any less love to give...they just have to cram all their love into a shorter time, which means your heart will be absolutely full of love and joy when you take him home! If you cannot adopt, please just consider fostering Billy so he doesn't have to spend his golden years in a cage! Billy is FREE to the perfect home, so please consider this wonderful baby!

Mickey - In Memory

Name: Mickey
Age: Approximately 1 year
Sex: Male (altered)

Owner Info: Mickey was found tied to a pole in a parking lot in New Jersey on a very hot day in July, with no food or water around. He was taken in by a small rescue and they discovered that Mickey has neurological problems, including hydrocephalus, and he is blind. He is an indoor dog who is not yet housetrained but he is good on a leash. He is good with people, except for very small children, and also good with other dogs. Sex: Female (altered)
Location: Little Rock, AR area

Vet Info: Poochie is confirmed spayed and up to date on vaccines.  Her next rabies vaccine is due 10/7/14.  She is heartworm negative.  Poochie weighs about 30 pounds.

Update 4/15/14: Poochie is now called Patty by her rescue, and Patty still needs a home!! She also needs some training, like most dogs do, but she is a great dog with her whole life ahead of her! Please help Patty get a new home!

Oscar - Adopted

Name: Oscar
Age: 7 years
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Shih Tzu
Location: East of Baltimore, MD

Vet Info: Oscar is neutered. He had a three year rabies shot in September 2013. He was found to be HW negative in November of 2012.

Owner Info: Oscar's owner has had him for about a year. He is an outdoor dog in a fenced yard. He is 14-17 pounds. He is not housetrained or leash-trained. He is good with people of all ages and with other dogs. If a dog bothers him, he will run and hide. He will snap at people if he is scared/when he is in a new place, but his owner said that he adjusted to her quickly and responds well to love and attention. His current owner is not able to give him the time and attention he needs, plus she does not have the money to care for him as she would like, so is hoping he can find a new home. He loves to run around the yard and loves to have his ears scratched. If his owner is sitting on the floor, he loves to crawl on her lap!

Misty - Adopted

Name: Misty
Breed: Yorkie
Age: Estimated 6 or 7 years
Sex: Female (altered)
Location: Katy, TX area

Vet Info: Misty is confirmed spayed and up to date on vaccines.  She is next due for her rabies vaccine on 7/15/14 and is up to date on bordetella and DHPPV.  She is heartworm negative and microchipped.  Misty weighs about 5 pounds.

Owner Info: Misty's owners found this little girl near their home in July.  She was extremely matted and very skinny.  She had a collar on, but only "Misty" was on the tag.  She is not micro chipped.  They have been unable to find her owners.  Misty is an indoor dog with run of the house, she is housebroken but not leash trained.   She is very sweet and loving! Her owner writes, " At the time, we decided to make Misty part of our family, which we have, we love her very much.  With a heavy heart I am writing because we are unable to continue keeping her in our home.  She has started to become aggressive to our yorkie that we had before Misty.  Our 1st yorkie is smaller than Misty, not sure if this has anything to do with it. Misty gets along fine with our lab.  She is also fine with our 2 year old son.  Here is some updated information on Misty since we have had her...The vet guesses she is 6-7 years old.  She is negative for diabetes, her blindness is caused by cataracts, but the vet says it is genetic since she is young and doesn't have diabetes.  She is also negative for heartworms (she has been on prevention meds since she has been with us).  Her skin was itchy and her hair was falling out when we got her, so the vet tested form mange, but that was negative as well.  We treated the itchy skin and she is better now, her hair growing normally.  She is up to date on her shots now and has been microchipped.  Her blindness doesn't hinder her much, she has learned to navigate our home and gets around really well.  She is housebroken but does have accidents if you aren't frequent about putting her outside."
