Annie

Name: Annie
Age: 8 years
Breed: Part Corgi
Sex: Female (altered per owner, not confirmed)
Location: Marietta, GA

Vet Info: Annie is spayed, up to date on vaccines and heartworm negative per her owner, but this has not been confirmed.  Her owner also wrote that Annie has had a dental.  Annie weighs about 30 pounds.

Owner Info: Annie is a beautiful girl who was adopted from an animal shelter about a month ago.  Her owner is disabled and can no longer take care of her.  She is desperate to find Annie a new home as soon as possible.  Annie should be considered very urgent.

Annie is an indoor dog with run of the house, she is not housebroken, but is leash trained.  She knows the command, sit.  Annie is described as outgoing!  Annie's owner tells us she's very sweet, and is not possessive of toys, treats, or food.  She has never bitten or snapped.  Annie doesn't live with any other animals currently.  Annie's owner says that Annie is blind in both eyes, and is in good health.

Annie's owner is desperately hoping we can help Annie.

Update 10/15/15:  Annie has been to the vet twice.  One time was for her dental and the second time was for a urine test.  Annie's owner notes that Annie does need to pee frequently and usually pees outside, but may pee in the house.  No UTI was found at the test.  The vet's office did not have a record of vaccines or HW testing, and was not able to confirm Annie's spay. Annie's blindness is due to cataracts.

As far as her owner knows, Annie is good with male and female dogs.  She's also good with men and women as well as older children.  Her owner says she's very friendly!  Annie may not be good with young children or cats/small animals, but this is not known for sure.

Update 11/15/15: We now suspect Annie has diabetes and she is extremely urgent! Her owner is not able to care for her.

Peyton - Adopted

Age: DOB 12/3/2014
Location: San Diego, CA area

Vet Info:  Peyton's owner writes that Peyton is current with vaccinations and has given more details about her eye issues:  "she was born with a recessive genetic disease there is no dna test for called optic nerve hypoplasia. Her sire and dam were unknowingly carriers. Her parents have had all their other testing and have eye exams every year. Peyton has also had eye tests and photos of her optic nerves and diagnosed completely blind with the possibility of visual slight shadows although I consider her totally blind."  Peyton is not yet spayed. Currently, she weighs about 8 pounds.

"Peyton is amazing at navigating around the house and yard without bumping into ANYTHING! Maybe she can see just a bit but I think she has just heightened smell and hearing skills as if something (food) drops she will be the 1st to find it. LOL"

If you have any questions or are interested in having Peyton become a member of your family, please email os@blinddogrescue.com.  Please include your full name, location, something about your home and current pets, and anything else you would like Peyton's owner/breeder to know.  Please also include whether you give us permission to forward your email and contact information to Peyton's owner. Missy - In BDRA Foster Care

Name: Missy
Age: Estimated 6-7 years
Breed: Bichon Mix
Sex: Female (not altered)
Location: Philadelphia, PA

Vet Info: As far as we know, Missy is not spayed, is not up to date on vaccines, has not had a recent heartworm test.  Missy's good samaritan writes, "She may have cushings (some hair loss, not confirmed by blood work) and she has tumors that have not been tested for cancer."  Missy weighs 21 pounds.

Owner Info: Missy is a beautiful girl with a sad story.  Her owner went into the hospital and Missy was alone for four days.  Missy was saved by a good samaritan, and she tells us,  "Previous owner is hospitalized and needs to go to a nursing home. I went out with a locksmith when I learned of situation; she had been alone 4 days."  Missy's good samaritan is not able to keep Missy and is desperately hoping for rescue.  Missy was very upset and frightened when she was found, and her good samaritan has brought her to the vet and to be groomed.  She wants to give Missy this chance to find a new home!  Missy appears completely blind, and her good samaritan tells us,  "I'm told she doesn't make tears and that her eyes pigmented over; I'm told that her eye lashes may be growing inward and that surgery may help." Missy is an indoor dog who is crated, she is housebroken and leash trained.  She's a smart little girl, and is learning the commands, Step, Kisses, Go for a walk, Dinner time, Get your leash, and Up (she loves to be held and will jump into your arms or onto your lap!) Missy is described as outgoing, and is not possessive of toys, treats, or food.  Her good samaritan has a large lab, and she gave us more details about how they are together:  "I have a 60 lb yellow lab mix and he is tolerating her; he's cautious of her. She follows him on walks. He is trained without a leash to voice commands and she follows him. She listens for him and likes to follow him....Growled at my dog when she was sitting on my lap once, but now they both can sit almost on top of me, each trying to get closer." Missy is also learning her new routine!  "She was never crate-trained, but I didn't want to give her the run of the house because I don't know her at all. My husband was trying to put her back into the crate and she didn't want to go in and she snapped at him and got his hand. Small nip, one small puncture wound. My husband wasn't fazed. I have been holding her and putting her down inside the crate before she knows what happens so she is fine with me. She doesn't like the crate, but is ok. It's been a week and she is tolerating it....She likes the car and the groomers and the vet. She wags her tail and approaches dogs and people very friendly, loves to be held and petted. She likes walks and listens when I give her warnings or call her back - I have been using an extender leash. she responds to tugs on the leash and seems to understand "Step" She seems to have learned my laundry room and den living area and to navigate steps into the kitchen." Missy's good samaritan wants to share how much progress she's made in only a week!  "As you can see from the photos, she loves being a lap dog and gets comfortable and falls asleep almost immediately in your lap.  She is fine with my dog.  She does the happy dance whenever you talk to her.  She is able to do the steps and walks on the leash ok, but needs guidance....She is a little love, loves the car and has started to give me kisses on demand. It's been a week and she trusts me!"

Max - Adopted

Name: Max
Age: Approximately 1 year
Breed: Yellow Labrador
Sex: Male (confirmed altered)
Location: Todd County, MN

Vet Info: Max had a rabies injection in June 2015 and is confirmed neutered.  He has not had a recent heartworm test.  Max weighs about 80 pounds.

Owner Info: Max is an adorable young fellow who was saved about six months ago.  His owner writes, "We have 2 other dogs in our home and they all got along fine for quite awhile, now we don't know why but Max and our small older dog don't get along and have become aggressive with each other. Max is about 80 pounds and our small dog is about 18 so when this happens Max hurts the other dog. He gets along great with our other dog and cats. We love Max and wish we could keep him but we have tried everything we know to try. At this point we have to keep them separated which is becoming very difficult and unfair to the dogs as they don't get the attention that they deserve."  They are very much hoping for rescue as soon as possible for Max. Max was originally rescued while they were on vacation in Texas.  His original owners were going to shoot him, possibly because Max was born blind.  Max's current owners say it seems he can see shadows when it's very light out. Max is an indoor and outdoor dog with a fenced yard, he is housebroken but not leash trained.  He is described as outgoing, and good with people of all ages.  Max is good with most dogs and cats, and currently lives with two male dogs and three cats.  Max is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, but he and the smaller male dog do not get along, as described above. His owners tell us that Max loves people and he is very sweet!  He's a smart fellow, too, and knows the commands, Sit, Potty, and Kisses.  And they write that Max does well in new situations.  "It is rather impressive how well he gets around!"

Baby Able - URGENT!

Name: Baby Able
Age: 11 weeks
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: Australian Shepherd
Location: Murfreesboro, TN area

Vet Info: Recently been to vet, got a clean bill of health, his first puppy shot and first Heart Guard treatment.

Owner Info: My husband and I rescued a blind-deaf Aussie puppy from an irresponsible breeder on Craigslist.  We have had him about two weeks and had him vet checked.  We didn't expect to keep this puppy but we agreed we had to get him away from this person and get him into the right hands!  He is a typical puppy (just 11 weeks old) and a typical Aussie... He nips and jumps and being blind and deaf, he needs a qualified person to train him to be a safe family member.  I am 51 and have difficult diabetes as well as Multiple Sclerosis.  I have very bad balance and difficulty walking.  Baby "Able" is very much a trip / fall hazard for me so we must get him into rescue ASAP.   I MUST get rest and remove added stressors.  This baby boy has definitely been a source of stress and worry the past two weeks. We knew it would be difficult but we were determined to help him!  I literally cannot take even one safe step because of him constantly at my feet nipping or jumping on or in front of me.  Bless his heart, he just wants to play and communicate....he's very smart, he learned immediately to "sit" for a treat with a gentle tap on his back end! We are desperate to get him moved to a rescue ASAP as my health is a major concern. I'm the only one who has been home with him during the day and I'm supposed to be resting now. Thank you so much for your help!

Autumn - In Foster Care

Name: Autumn
Breed:  Hound/Beagle Mix
Sex: Female (unknown if altered)
Age: Estimated 10-12 years
Location: Johnson City, TN area

Vet Info: She has just been to the vet, she is approximately 10-12 years old.  She weighs 38 lbs and is about 10-15 lbs underweight. No parasites evident, she does have an ear infection which they will be treating.  No HW test was performed.

Owner Info: One of our volunteers was notified by her vet about this dog.  A woman found her as a stray wandering in traffic. The woman stopped and picked her up and brought her to the vet to see if she was microchipped (and she is not). She is blind - estimate between 8 - 10 years old....maybe a hound/beagle mix?  The woman's guess on weight was about 40 lbs...but the dog is very skinny. Very skinny, no collar.  The woman is going to take her to her vet and will keep the dog for a little bit, so the dog is safe for now. The woman has 6 dogs of her own with 3 small kids.  Our volunteer asked if she could keep the dog separate from her dogs / kids and provide a quiet / safe area for her to regain her strength which she can and will. She's doing well - she's eating, drinking, sleeping and just wants to be loved.

They can only keep her until Tuesday, October 6 as they are leaving to go out of town. Any foster homes available?

Update 10/3/15:  She is good with both men and women, but is startled by her good samaritan's small children and likely needs quiet time to recover and feel safe. Her good samaritan tells us she's very friendly!  "She seems to be adapting well. She is very friendly. As long as you let her know you are there, she wags her tail and begs for a belly rub."

The cause of her blindness is unknown, and her good samaritan tells us she appears completely blind.  She also shared more details about her vet visit.  "She appears to be completely blind, but the vet was not sure what caused her blindness. She has cataracts, but they aren't bad enough to be causing the blindness.... She is 10 - 15 pounds underweight. The vet believes she just hasn't been able to find food. Blood work would need to be done to rule out other issues. She has an ear infection - meds received from vet to start treating. Since bringing her into our home she has been eating, drinking, voiding and having normal bowel movements. No parasites were found in her stool sample. Unknown as to whether or not she has been spayed. No visible scars noted to indicate surgery."

Update 10/16/15:  This beautiful girl now has a beautiful name... .Autumn!  One of our foster homes had a chance to spend several days with Autumn while her good samaritan was away.

“I've had Autumn from Saturday to Thursday am.  The person who found Autumn went on vacation and returned Wednesday night.  I gave Autumn back to her Thursday at 10:00. but wanted to give an update on her.  She does not want to take Autumn to the shelter as she would be put down.  Autumn definitely belonged to someone, she is very comfortable in the house, knows how to walk on leash and loves all people.

She is wonderful - a total love.  Will flip over for belly rubs almost as soon as you start petting her.  She ate well and definitely is gaining some weight.  Her ears seem to be clearing up but still has goop coming out when I put the meds in (2x / day).

I've kept her separate from my guys - however, I did want to test her with this aggression because it doesn't seem to fit her personality.

On Saturday, my boxer, Bear and Sunny (my Aussie) were in the screened in porch (we have rails up also so no one can go through the screen).  We have a deck next to the porch so Autumn and I walked up to the screen.  She was definitely aggressive but it seemed more like a defensive aggression.  So I removed her from the deck.

On Sunday, we tried again and she walked up to the screen and nothing....her tail was wagging, she was smelling the air, but absolutely no aggression.

Monday and Tuesday, I did it again - each time, no aggression.  Tail wagging and head high smelling the air.

On Wednesday and Thursday, I brought the crate into the living room and put her in it, then brought Bear into the room.  Bear walked up to the crate and Autumn was wagging her tail with no sign of aggression again.  She wasn't happy being in the crate, but no aggression towards Bear. I put Bear on the other side of the gate, which blocks the living room from the rest of the house.  Bear was with Sunny on the opposite side of the gate.  I let Autumn out of the crate, put her on leash and walked her up to the gate.  Again, tail was wagging and no sign of aggression. I kept her with me in the living room all day on Wednesday and Hero, Sunny and Bear have come up to the gate to see her and she hasn't paid any mind to any of them.  She's been walking around the room and goes past the gate often - will stop and smell, then continues on her way.  I put her back in the expen in the living room and let the other dogs wander around her and still no reaction.

My thoughts on this:  I think she is newly blind, out on her own for God knows how long, and she's been scared.  I don't think she would be dog aggressive given the proper slow introductions.  The foster home would just have to take it slow with her.  The vet that saw her thinks she has a lesion somewhere between her eyes and brain, no significant cataracts.  I'm not sure if the lesion will heal and she'll regain some or all of her sight or if she would need some other type of treatment.

She loves squeeky toys!

If anyone can foster this sweet old girl, please send an email to the foster team.”

Update 10/22/15: Autumn continues to do well!  Please read her update below, and check out her beautiful new photo!  Autumn is still waiting to find rescue or a new home.

"Autumn is doing very well!! She continues to eat well so she has some meat on her bones now :)  She LOVES her belly rubs!! She's a big lap dog who really needs someone who has more time for her. With 3 little boys and 6 dogs of our own we feel bad that we don't have more time for her. We are really hoping we can find the perfect forever home for her - she is super sweet and deserves the best!!  We really appreciate all your help."

Update 11/12/15: Peggy has heard from Autumn's good samaritans, and they're not able to keep her much longer.  Autumn is becoming urgent!  Peggy writes, "The people that found her can't keep her much longer and she'll be turned into the shelter here.  The shelter won't keep her long as she is blind, so I'd say she's now coming close to critical."

Tobin - In Memory

Name:  Tobin
Age: 5 1/2 years
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Pointer/Hound Mix
Location: Near Ft. Worth, TX

Vet Info: Tobin is neutered and heartworm negative per his owner, but this has not yet been confirmed.  He is not up to date on vaccines. Tobin weighs 147 pounds.

Owner Info: Tobin is a loving, sweet boy who was adopted by his current owners from a shelter 5 1/2 years ago.  About a year ago, Tobin lost his sight. He is also on medication for Hypothyroidism. Tobin is having some trouble adapting to his condition and his owners feel that he would do better with someone who has the time and ability to work him so he can become more comfortable in getting around. His owners say "Tobin is sweet and handsome.dog..he is big but doesn't have a mean bone in body..we love him and are hopeful to find him a safe Haven with folks who can provide love and care..I am fearful he will injure himself at our home when we are gone." Tobin is good with children, cats and dogs. He isn't possessive over food or toys. He is a bit anxious but due to not really understanding what has happened to him. He is housebroken and leash trained and knows some commands like "sit." He just needs someone that can take the time to help him adapt to his new life. His owners also said, "He used to chase squirrels and I used to complain about how hard it was to walk him because of squirrels.  Oh how I wish he could be that dog again.  I know he does too…. Tobin is a beautiful dog. He was crazy fun and hyper before losing his vision and now just walks around in a daze and sleeps mostly.  He seems terribly depressed and it’s tearing us up."
