Cody - Adopted

Name: Cody
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Thought to be Pekenese/Cocker Spaniel Mix
Age: 5 years
Location: Lakeland, FL

Vet/Medical Info: Cody is neutered. He received a one year rabies vaccination on 10/27/2011. He also had a heartworm test that was negative. No other vaccinations were given. He received a double dose for rabies because he had one in August and it was entered incorrectly in vets computer and not noticed until today after he had been given it.

Owner Info: Cody's owner is 89 years old. In the last year she was diagnosed with a mass in her lower abdomen and has refused to have tests or treatment. Her daughter is a Hospice Nurse and got her into the home Hospice services. She is now very frail. During this time Cody has developed cataracts. She only gets a low social security income and can only stand for 2 or 3 minutes at a time, a couple times a day. They live alone in an apartment and she has stopped taking Cody outside, he has to go on pads she puts on the floor. Everyone takes turns going over there to clean up as Cody often misses the pads. They have tried to get her into an ALF or now Nursing Home, because of her low income and her not wanting to move, every time there's an opening it is just really proving impossible. Since Cody lost his sight he gets scared more easily by the sounds of other people and animals. He's a real sweet dog and is very attached to his owner, she told one of the nurse's that she couldn't leave the house unless Cody died first. They don't think she really believes that's possible but that she would risk her own health for his is a testament to how much she loves him and how horrible it would be for him to have to go to the pound or SPCA. They don't want to have Cody put down, he's family, but they have two large dogs that's he's afraid of, if they could get her to agree to come live with them. Cody is an indoor dog with the run of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained. He is good with people of all ages, female dogs, cats and other small animals. They are really at their wits end and would so appreciate help.

Bones - Adopted

Name: Bones
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Lab Mix
Age: 12 years
Location: Dover Plains, NY

Vet/Medical Info: Bones had all of her vaccinations 7/29/11. The distemper and rabies were for 3 years. She is spayed and was tested on 7/29 for heartworm and was negative. She is on Insulin.

Owner Info: Bones's current owner would love to keep her as she is a total sweetheart, but she can't financially due to other pets with health conditions. Bones is blind and diabetic. Her owner found her in horrific condition, her eyes were swollen shut, she was starved (about 30 pounds underweight), filthy, missing fur and couldn't even stand on her own four feet. After several weeks of R&R, lots of treats and love, she is improving impressively. Their vet gave them a generous discount to have her checked out to see how bad she was. Everything they were concerned about came back negative, however she was extremely and dangerously diabetic. She has started on insulin shots, they have increased the amount numerous times and think they have finally found the right dosage for her. Despite all of this, her tail continues to wag and all she wants to do is rest her head in your lap and be loved. Bones is approximately 12 years old though her teeth are in good shape. She is blind (due to the untreated diabetes) and can only decipher light and dark and sometimes a shadow. Her coat is coming back shiny and smooth though she does have her gray hair to give away her age. She is great with cats and dogs, is extremely intelligent and is already learning commands to help her navigate while on walks. You say "step" and she lifts her paw to feel for the step. She loves walks now and immediately comes when you whistle for her and knows other commands such as "right" "left" "step up" "step down" "sit" "come". She is still having accidents in the house due to the diabetes but is completely trained to go on weewee pads. They have contacted Rescue organizations, SPCA and placed a Petfinder ad. Bones is an inside dog with the run of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained. She is great with people of all ages, dogs, cats and other small animals (she currently lives with dogs, a cat and a snake). Please open your heart and home to this old gal so she can live out the remainder of her life in a loving home being spoiled and cuddled. Bones is truly a sweetheart just wanting to see what her life should have been like all along, before she was a stray. She is a true fighter! She was near death and in just 3 months has gained weight, grown her fur back and can run and play!

Teno (pronounced Tah-no) - Adopted

Name: Teno
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Miniature Schnauzer
Age: 8 years
Location: Summerville, SC

Vet/Medical Info: Teno received a heartworm test 5/4/10. It was negative. He was due for all of his vaccinations 5/4/11. He is neutered and was on Thyrozine but client hasn't picked up any lately.

Owner Info: Teno's (pronounced Tah-no) owner is on disability and tries to work part-time to make ends meet. She does not feel she is capable of giving Teno the attention and care he needs at this time as her health prevents her. She has posted Teno on Facebook and Craigslist and has also talked to P.A.W.S. and a Schnauzer rescue program. He has been housebroken all his life, but recently has started having more accidents. She thinks this is due to her lack of a consistent schedule with him. Teno adapted well when they moved a few months ago, adapted to the new floor plan and furniture lay-out very quickly. He is careful in new places and doesn't seem to mind or get frightened. Teno was diagnosed with SARDS and he also has a thyroid condition that sometimes requires daily medication, Thyrozine 0.3 MG (this is very inexpensive). Because of this condition he also eats only weight control food. Teno is a very loving, calm, sweet dog. "Teno" is short for his Cherokee Indian name meaning "Little Scout". She adopted him when he was 1.5 years old and he has been a joy in her life. He hardly barks, loves to snuggle and needs lots of love. He is used to living in apartments, but loves the outdoors too. He is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house, Teno is housebroken and leash trained. He is good with people of all ages, other dogs, cats and small animals (he currently lives with 4 birds). Most people are marvelled when they find out he's blind because he does so well. He likes to play and is well behaved around strangers and visitors. He is used to being an "only child", however, he does well with other pets. He has a cute personality and loves attention but doesn't need it all the time. She hates to admit it, but time is of the essence. She can't keep him much longer and needs relief as soon as possible.

Scruffy-Adopted

Name: Scruffy
Sex: Male  (neutered)
Breed: Poodle
Age: 8 or 9 years old
Location: Greensboro, NC

Vet/Medical Info: Scruffy received all of his vaccinations on 10/13/11. The rabies was a three year vaccination.  Heartworm test given on the same date was negative. Scruffy is neutered.

Owner Info: Scruffy is an adorable poodle who as found as a stray. The good samaritans who found him are unable to keep him because of the pets they already have. They checked all lost dog postings and Pet Amber Alert, but have been unable to locate his owners. Scruffy weighs about 8 pounds. Scruffy is an indoor dog with free run of the house, but he is not housebroken or leash trained. They believe he may have been an outdoor dog due to his coat condition when found, and because he is not housebroken or leash trained. He may also have some hearing loss. Scruffy is good with cats (they have two cats), but has not been tested around other dogs. Scruffy is not possessive with treats, toys, or food, but he does snap when you put your hands close to his mouth or face - - they believe this is due to pain from a mouth infection. However, he is getting better about being handled and is getting more relaxed as he has been treated for the infection and seems to be recovering.  Scruffy has cataracts in both eyes - he can distinguish light/dark; squints when in sunlight; can see close to his face, but they are not sure about extent of his vision loss. When they first found him, he seemed lethargic and sick, but is becoming more active and is now eating and drinking normally.  He has been treated with antibiotics, lots of rest, and TLC. He was found on a parking lot on Oct. 13 and was taken to the vet that day for evaluation, grooming, and vaccinations. He is adorable, and is learning to walk on a leash; he is more tolerant of being handled as he gets more accustomed to being petted and held.
The picture is of Scruffy after he was groomed.  Owner is willing to help with transportation.

Tucker - Staying With Owner

Name: Tucker
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Mixed Breed, maybe some Lab?
Age: Approximately 12 - 18 months
Location: Hamlin, WV

Vet/Medical Info: Vaccinations UTD including rabies until 10/17/12.  Never tested for heartworm. Tucker was neutered in November 2011 and has had a repair for an umbilical hernia.
Owner Info: Tucker is a very loving dog!  He came to his current owner as a stray. He just appeared in her yard one day. Because they already have three dogs and they both work long hours, they are unable to keep him. He weighs 40 pounds. He is an outdoor dog and is not housebroken or leash trained. Tucker is good with other dogs, but can be possessive of his food. He has never bitten or snapped at anyone.Tucker has been diagnosed with Progressive Retinal Atrophy and he is totally blind. Tucker appears healthy other than the PRA, has a good appetite and is very playful. The vet is not sure how long he has been blind and might have just recently lost all vision. He became very anxious at the vet's office recently and showed some aggression there, however, he did not bite anyone. Owner believes that if she had been allowed to be with him when they were administering his vaccinations there would probably not have been any problems, but he did react when someone strange approached from behind. He calmed down once he was brought back to her. They have seen no signs of agression with them, their neighbors or extended family members. He is not shy, but he does become nervous with loud noises (gunshots). They have not observed him with small or younger children. They have cats but he has not seen them. He really is a happy go lucky dog who just wants a family to love him!

Optimus Prime-In Tiny Dog Rescue/Blind Dog Haven Foster Care, WA

Name: Optimus Prime
Sex: Female (not altered)
Breed: Chihuahua
Age: 5-6 weeks
Location: Houston, TX

Vet/Medical Info: At time of visit the vet estimates pup is about five weeks old, approximate dob 9/13/2011. Pup is obviously not spayed, hasn't had hw testing and has had no vaccines. Pup has bigger head than normal and has soft spot on side of head - not top. Pup has vision problems and had no reaction to any vision testing done. They believe pup will have issues, possibly genetic, but could not say exactly what. Exam was very brief because they did not want to charge for it.

Owner Info: This sweet 5-6 week old puppy was dumped at a local Petsmart in Katy, Texas. She is blind and cannot eat on her own. A GS has taken her in and has been feeding her via syringe every few hours and also giving her puppy milk to help build her bones in her back legs. Her hind legs have a lack of strength, therefore she does not stand too well and wobbles a lot. The vet said that she MAY have some sort of brain damage and/or water on her brain due to the shape of her head. She did not respond to simple vision tests performed by vet (i.e: cottonball test, near tap test) and does not look in any direction to respond to sounds. Her current owner (the GS) has contacted many, if not, almost all of the local rescues in Texas (non-breed specific) in order to find someone who would take her in, but with no success. The little girl has yet to really explore where she is and what is around her. Every time her owners other dogs or cats come up to sniff her, she does not respond in any way. She keeps her head down and continues her rest. She has very little to no activity throughout the day, although they have attempted to get her to move around but she just lays right down where ever they put her. She is not too badly under weight. She eats when the food is fed through syringe and drinks also without having any bad reactions to it. She is a lover. She will be the BEST lap dog. She loves to be cuddled into your shirt whether it be when you're driving or simply laying on the couch. She does give small kisses and she knows the voice of a kind human and stops shaking when she hears it. She loves to be in her little pink crate and sleeps most of the night (wakes up around 2 am for a small feeding or a drink) but does not bark much (unless she feels lost) and is very sweet in nature.
