Name: Pikils
Age: 4 1/2 years
Breed: Border Collie
Sex: Female (altered)
Location: Austin, TX
Vet Info: Pikils is
spayed and up to date on vaccines, including
rabies, distemper/parvo, and bordetella. Her owner writes that she
is heartworm negative but this has
not been confirmed. Pikils weighs about
45 pounds. Her owner tells us that
her blindness was sudden and immediate and caused by uveitis and
glaucoma. Other than her blindness, Pikils "is healthy and comfortable, one of her eyes may need
to be removed in the future".
Owner Info: Pikils is a beautiful, sweet and gentle little girl who is afraid to be
alone after becoming blind. Her owner writes that she cries, and when
she's scared, she tends to urinate. He has been bringing her to work, but
will no longer be able to do so, and the neighbors complain when he leaves her
home in the apartment. She's happy as long as she is not alone for long
periods of time. In September he has to go back to work full time and he is
very much hoping "someone can give her a good home way before then".
Her owner writes, "She needs a good home and I am getting to the
point to where I am going to have to make a move with her not matter how
painful or unpleasant it may be. my job and my residence are both in jeopardy.
She desperately needs your help". He has tried to find her a home with
no luck. "I have tried everything I can think of to find her a
good home. no luck. again she is so sweet and loving. she is just scared. a
wonderful temperament and seems to be very happy as long as she is not alone
for long periods of time. I have to leave her for a minimum of 10 hours with
driving time some days back and forth to work. some days only a few hours. the
few hours are ok except for the crying. its the long days that are the most
trouble. so for now I bring her with me on those days." Pikils is an
indoor dog with run of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained.
Her owner writes that she's a very smart girl and knows 50 words! She
knows people's names, the names of her toys, and will fetch on command!
Before she went blind, he tells us that Pikils was an excellent Frisbee dog. Pikils
is not possessive of toys, treats, or food and has never bitten or
snapped. She is frightened of loud men and she'll get nervous and "pee
on the floor". She currently lives with a cat and a min
pin. We've asked for more information on how Pikils is with other dogs,
and we will update as soon as we hear back. He wants us to know that Pikils is
very gentle, loving, and sweet and he is desperately hoping we can help.
Update 5/14/15: "She is great around other dogs and
cats, her best friend is a cat lol .... she is skidish at 1st
around other dogs until the 1st sniff or 2. I think its because she is
blind and just nervous. she was attacked by a pit bull when she was a
year and a half. hurt her pretty bad. but never aggressive. worst
thing she will do is squat and pee when she is scared or nervous. and
that has just started since she went blind this last year. before that
she is very playful around kids and dogs. never shown any signs of
aggression. she has a new habit of giving a bark out when
customers come in but she is just saying hi. and it is just a single
bark. not sure where she came up with that because she isn't a barker
unless the doorbell rings...."
