Casper - In Foster Care

Name: Casper
Sex: Male (not altered)
Age: Five weeks
Breed: Great Dane
Location: Slightly west of Houston, TX

Vet Info:  Vet believes Casper has micro opthalmia.  His sockets are sunken and he couldn't see Casper's eyeballs.  Casper made no response to loud noises, so vet believes he's also deaf.  Casper has had his first set of puppy shots, and his vet said, "that's really all he needs right now".  Casper weighs 10 pounds.

Owner Info: Casper's owner is a breeder who has to sell most of her own danes due to health issues.  She has been breeding dogs for over 19 years off and on, and this is the first deaf and blind puppy she's had.  She was advised to put Casper down but she doesn't want to do that.  She knew he was deaf but not blind (because he plays so well with siblings, goes to food and water bowls and comes to her when she goes into whelping pen) until she had him examined this week.  She's tried to place him, but has had no luck.  Casper is good with people of all ages, and both dogs and cats. She has taken him to other rooms of the house and he maneuvers around well and doesn't really bump into furniture, which is why she thought he could see. She believes he may see a little.  Casper is a total sweetheart!

Murdock - In Foster Care

Name: Murdock
Sex:  Male (not yet altered, but will be)
Age: 2 years old
Breed: Chihuahua/Shiba Inu mix?
Location: Colorado Springs, CO

Vet Info:   Murdock will be vetted prior to placement.  Murdock weighs 15 pounds.

Owner Info:  Murdock was pulled from a kill shelter by another rescue, right before he was to be euthanized.  He was originally picked up as a stray in Denver and appears to be completely blind.  Unfortunately, they've not been able to find a foster home for him within their rescue as their fosters are always bursting at the seams, and Murdock is having a great deal of difficulty in their kennel.  He is a very sweet dog who is kind and gentle when he isn't so stressed, but the kennel is just too stressful and frightening for him, and he will snap when he is first approached.  If approached slowly, however, he will calm down quickly.  Murdock is kenneled alone.  He is housebroken but not leash trained, and he is good with both men and women.  Notes from the shelter paperwork before he was pulled say that he was very frightened and timid, but would take treats from your hand (he likes cheese and hot dogs the most!), and would allow himself to be picked up.  Once in your arms, he would cling and bury his head in your neck or shoulder.

When asked if he is good with other dogs, this was the answer given:
"The volunteers have been working with Murdock to get him used to a kennel mate. We have divided a kennel in half with an x-pen and put Murdock (blind) on one side and Rachael, a laidback Chihuahua on the other. They spent some time whining today but settled down. Two of our volunteers took both Rachael and Murdock into the socialization area and sat with them on their laps next to each other on the couch. They did well and relaxed and enjoyed to goings-on in the busy area near the socialization area and when put back settled right down in their kennels and were fine. Murdock is getting more comfortable with the daily cleaning routine also."

Heidi - In Foster Care

Name: Heidi
Sex: Female (not altered)
Breed: Australian Shepherd
Age: 9 weeks
Location: Huntington Beach, CA

Owner Info:  Heidi's caregiver's family was at an animal shelter a couple of weeks ago looking for their cat who had gotten outside. As they were waiting for the gates to open, a man came to turn in a white Australian shepherd puppy. He said that he bred the mom and all the puppies came out blind or deaf, but this one was the worst one. The other ones he said he could still sell.  They couldn’t let her be put to sleep which they assumed would be done, so they brought her home. They have tried to find her a home through networking, Craigslist etc., but have had no luck.  Unfortunately, their family just can’t keep her after this week. They will be travelling and cannot board her since she is so young. They are now hoping and praying for a reputable rescue to be able to take her under their wing to find her a home. They say that they will sponsor her care until she finds a forever home. Per her caregivers, Heidi is now about 9 weeks old, had her first vaccination and is in overall good health. They believe that she is completely deaf, but can see shadows. She has no issues whatsoever playing with their other two dogs, their cat (who came back home that next afternoon), and their three kids (range in ages from 1-8), and they feel that Heidi adapts well to new situations and surroundings. They thank you in advance for your kind consideration in this matter.

Koby - In Foster Care

Name: Koby
Sex: Male (altered)
Age: 2 years
Breed: Yorkie
Location: Eastern Virginia

Vet Info: Koby had a three year rabies shot on 10/31/10. He had a one year distemper and bordetella on 12/16/11 and so is due for a booster for each. He was HW negative in March of 2012. He has been neutered. He was last seen at the vet in July and was healthy at that time. The vet records say the owner reports that Koby was born blind.

Owner Info: Koby is a beautiful Yorkie who is two years old and weighs ten pounds. His owner wants him to have a new home because Koby does not get along with her chihuahua. He is an indoor dog who is crated. He is housebroken and leash-trained and knows the command to "sit." He is an outgoing dog who is good with people of all ages and also gets along well with the yorkypoo who lives in his house - just not the chihuahua. The owner is not sure how Koby would do with other dogs or with cats. The owner also said Koby is "a little snuggle bunny."

Glacie - Staying With Owner

Name: Glacie
Sex: Female (altered)
Age: 6 years old
Breed: Akita
Location: Hamilton, Ontario

Vet Info: Glacie is up to date on her rabies and distemper (due again in September of 2015). Her last heartworm test was in 2009. She is spayed. The vet believes that Glacie's blindness is caused by pannus. Overall, except for her vision, she is in good health and the vet said that Glacie's owner has "taken good care of her."

Owner Info: Glacie is a beautiful 98 pound Akita. Her owner wrote: "I am a recently separated single mother of two young children with no help. I have taken Glacie to the vet to find she has pannus. I cannot afford her medication and don't have the time for her as I work full-time and then take care of my children." Glacie is an indoor dog with the run of the house. She is housebroken and leash-trained. She graduated from a Petsmart dog training class. She is a little nervous but is good with people of all ages and also good with dogs, cats and other small animals. Glacie currently lives with two cats, a shih tzu, and a rabbit. While Glacie is not possessive of her food or toys, she may growl at small children when she does not want to be hugged - but she has never bitten or even snapped.

Kali - Adopted

Name: Kali
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Schnauzer
Age: 6 years
Location: North Central Utah

Vet Info: Kali is confirmed spayed.  She is up to date on her vaccines and is next due for Rabies, Bordetella, and Distemper vaccines on 4/9/2013.  They had no record of heartworm testing and no information to add about her eyes.  Kali weighs 13 pounds.

Owner Info: Kali's owner is not home enough to give her the training she needs now that she is blind. Kali has always had issues with pooping all over the place when she is upset, and they have been able to handle that before, but now that she is blind, they can't seem to train her. Her owner notes that it is such a problem that her quality of life has decreased because Kali constantly needs to be in her kennel. She has tried contacting coworkers, posting on websites, talking with the Humane Society, and many other rescues, but has had no luck.  Kali is an indoor dog confined to one area of the home, and she is leash trained.  She is good with men and women and other dogs.  Kali knows "sit", "stay", and "go".  She is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, and has never shown any aggression.  Kali's owner says, "She is blind due to an eye infection she got. The doctor tested her for diabetes or for problems with her blood sugar, and she was fine", and adds that unless she eats Iams, she'll get diarrhea or will vomit.  She wants us to know Kali is a very sweet little girl!!!

Rosie - In Foster Care

Name: Rosie
Breed: Australian Shepherd Mix?
Age: 10 years (estimated)
Sex: Female (altered)
Location: Michigan

Vet info: Rosie is confirmed spayed via a spay scar. She is up to date on her vaccines and next due for Bordatella, Rabies and DHLPP 12/20/2013. Fecal and heartworm testing were both negative. Rosie weighs about 30 pounds.

Owner Info: Rosie's caregivers found her just a week ago wandering in their neighborhood and rescued her. Rosie was covered in fleas and had a lot of hair loss as a result, and may have been dumped by her owner.  They have contacted several rescues, placed "found dog" ads in their local paper and local radio station, but have had no luck.  She does not have a microchip.  She does not appear to be housebroken, but is leash trained.    Rosie is currently living at the kennel at their vet's office and is doing very well there, however when they first picked her up and put her in their yard, she was clearly on a mission to continue on her journey to somewhere, as she kept trying to walk through their chain link fence. They have seen her with dogs, cats, men, women and teens and she did great with all of them!  Rosie seems very quiet, trusting, and did not show any surprise or aggression when she was found. She couldn't hear her current caregiver's approach and had her back to her, and when she was touched, Rosie turned slowly and wagged her tail!!  Rosie has cataracts on both eyes, one is very mature, but she probably sees some light and shadow with the other. She appears to be almost totally deaf as well. They also note that she is a bit stiff in her legs, so probably has some arthritis. She is a sweet, quiet girl with a beautiful white coat now that she has been bathed and they're hoping she can find a forever home to live out her senior years in comfort.   She is definitely worth the effort, sweet girl that she is!!!
