Sophie - Staying With Owner

Name: Sophie
Age: 7 years
Breed: Brittany/Beagle
Sex: Female (altered)
Location: Southern Indiana

Vet Info: Sophie received one year rabies and distemper/parvo vaccines on 6/24/13, so is next due 6/24/14.  She is heartworm negative and confirmed spayed.  Sophie weighs 55 pounds.

Owner Info: Sophie is a very sweet Brittany/Beagle mix with SARDS. He writes, ʺIt's not fair to her when she still has a lot of energy and wants to play all the time.ʺ Sophie is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained. She knows sit, stay, and come! Sophie gets along with people of all ages, but has snapped at her owner's german shepherd when he tries to ʺhump her and she doesnt like it!!!ʺ We asked her owner if he thought she'd get along with other dogs, and he wrote, ʺSince her blindness I have not exposed her to many other dogs she gets nervous sometimes but not always so I don't really know how she would react to other dogs with her blindness.ʺ He also writes, ʺShe needs a good home !!! Very loving dog with a great heart !!!ʺ

Billy - In Foster Care

Name: Billy
Age: Estimated 8 years
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Fox Terrier Mix
Location: Augusta, GA area

Vet Info: Billy is neutered per the shelter.  He is up to date on vaccines and heartworm negative.  His rabies vaccine is next due 2/13/14.  Billy weighs 25 pounds.

Owner Info: Billy was pulled from the shelter by a very kind-hearted person to save his life.  She is now hoping for rescue as she has too many dogs for her community and is unable to keep him.  Billy was in the shelter for five months, and has only been out of the shelter for a week.  Poor Billy was quite frightened in the shelter, and would actually shake in his pen while he was sleeping.  Even getting a bath was too much for him.  Billy has since had a bath, but is still frightened and will let out a warning growl if something is too much for him, although this is getting better.  He has never bitten.  His caregiver writes, "since coming out of the shelter he will growl and let you know he is upset. He has also tried to snap, but he stops doing this once he gets to know you. This is getting better every day. "  Billy is an outdoor dog with a fenced in yard, he is housebroken and leash trained.  He is good with other dogs and cats and is not possessive of toys, treats, or food.  Billy's caregiver is unsure of the reason for his blindness and says he does not have cataracts or blurry eyes.  She also writes, "It is a miracle Billy is still here. He was in a high kill shelter shaking on the floor when I saw him. He has been in there for 4 months and the workers said his time was up. I was never planning on keeping him, but rather waiting until the correct rescue came along. He is very good at trying to go to the bathroom outside and he loves to walk and lay in the back yard. He is actually very easy. He also enjoys the bath, however, he does not enjoy being picked up".

From Billy's shelter post: An owner turned him in and told us he was 6yrs old but honestly he seems older and I would guess he was at least 7-8yrs old. He loves toys and plays like a puppy with a squeaky plush toy. He startles very easily and new things frighten him, but he does respond to floor vibrations and sound. We have tried to bathe him but it is much too scary for him, so we have not pushed the issue. This is not b/c we don't care if he is dirty, it is b/c if he bites someone he will no longer be a candidate for adoption. He would be euthanized; therefore his present state is due to our life saving measures. Billy needs someone familiar with blind and fearful dogs. That someone will have to have a lot of patience. He is so worth it!  "We think he is pretty special!"

Keller - Adopted

Name: Keller
Age: Estimated 4-6 years
Breed: Mixed Breed, possibly Labrador Mix
Sex: Male (altered)
Location: Southeast Ohio

Vet Info: Keller is confirmed neutered.  He is heartworm negative and up to date on vaccines.  His next rabies vaccine is due 11/12/15, and his DPC vaccine is due in November of 2012.  Keller weighs about 45 pounds.

Owner Info: Keller's owner rescued him 2 years ago from the local shelter. He had been picked up by the humane officer running loose out in the county. He was completely blind when they found him and also has a couple of broken teeth.  He has come a long way since then!  Keller's owner is a single mother who has had some medical conditions come up in the last year that leave her unable to keep up with and care for her two dogs.  She writes, "It has been beyond a painful decision for us", and she is heartbroken. She has reached out to friends and family with no luck.  Keller is an indoor dog with run of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained.  Keller knows "come" and "lay down"!  He is good with people of all ages and both male and female dogs.  Keller's owner has no cats and has never seen him with a cat, so she is unsure of how he would be with them.   Keller is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, and has never bitten or snapped.  Keller's owner writes, "Keller immediately took to us, has been able to manoeuvre through our house up & down the stairs inside & up & down the steps that lead to the fenced yard. He is loving to anyone that enters the home and is very snuggly and loving.  He is just a sweetheart who has already endured so much that I don't want him to end up in a bad place or euthanized. He has much love and joy to offer to someone who can see past his blindness!"

Oliver - Staying With Owner

Name: Oliver
Age: 6 years
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Yellow Labrador
Location: Northeastern Rhode Island

Vet InfoOliver is confirmed neutered.   He is behind on all shots and they had no HW test on record there. He had very unregulated diabetes but now is on a good diet, getting his glucose checked and is getting insulin shots. The vet's office said he is so easy-going, walks well on a leash, loves belly rubs, no growling ever. They also said he is an "awesome dog!"   Oliver weighs approximately 50 pounds.

Owner Info: Oliver's owner has been unable to physically and financially care for Oliver for some time, and his owner is now hospitalized. Her family is also unable to care for Oliver.  If Oliver is unable to find rescue or adoption, his owner's family writes, "We are unfortunately going to have to put Oliver to sleep this weekend if we can't find a place for him".   They have also tried friends and other rescues, but have not had any luck in finding a new home for Oliver. Oliver has become so obese the last few years that he weighed 120 lbs. Because of this, poor Oliver developed diabetes and then lost all this weight and now needs to gain weight. He has to receive insulin everyday and has now become blind due to the diabetes. Oliver has been at the vet since Monday because they have no place for him to go.  Oliver is an indoor dog with run of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained.  He is good with men, women, children, and other dogs, but they did not check that he is good with cats.  He is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, and has never shown any aggression.  His owner's family writes, "This is absolutely heartbreaking to me. Oliver is such a sweet dog....good with all people and other dogs. He just wants to love you. Just the thought of having to put him down pains me so much...but we are out of options. Your rescue is our last hope and I'm hoping you can help us. He is the sweetest boy and has not received the best care the last few years and deserves to live the rest of his life with proper care and love. PLEASE help us save Oliver. Thank you".

Sex:  Male (not altered yet)
Breed:  American Pit Bull Terrier
Location: Louisiana

Gracie - Adopted

Name: Gracie
Age: 3-4 years
Breed: Border Collie
Sex: Female (altered)
Location: Cincinnati, OH area

Vet Info: Gracie is confirmed spayed.  She is up to date on vaccines, and next due for rabies, bordetella and distemper on 5/25/14.  She is due for her parvo vaccine on 11/23/13.   Gracie weighs 28 pounds.

Owner Info: A good samaritan witnessed a dog get run over by a van.  The good samaritan stopped to check on her, and while injured, the dog had a pulse, so the good samaritan rushed her to the closest vet. They said she wouldn't make it. Two weeks later they called and gave her a stray dog and a huge bill!  Even though she already had three dogs and three small children, the good samaritan took Gracie (the dog that was hit) into her home.   Gracie is healed now but blind in one eye.  Unfortunately, one of her caregiver's other dogs is very dominant and attacks Gracie.  Gracie usually tries to hide, but "at some point she has to defend herself", and then her caregiver is in the middle.    She is doing her best to keep them separated but it is very difficult and she is not sure how long she can keep it up.  Gracie is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house.  She is housebroken and leash trained.  She gets along well with her caregiver's other dogs and her three small children, but her caregiver says she will need some training on "no jump".   She is also nervous around men, but does fine with women.  When asked if Gracie has shown aggression or broken skin, her caregiver writes, "She only shows aggression when attack by my bulldog.....She did break skin but no vet visit was needed for either dog.... It's so sad she tries to hide and get away while I'm trying to pick up my bulldog to get her to stop. Gracie deserves better. She is not people aggressive, our Ferret got out once and she didn't eat her, and she has never seen other small animals. She does not like other dogs around her while she eats. She prefers a place of her own but also loves attention from her owner."  Her caregiver also says, "She's very healthy, really healthier then my other dogs. Her only issue is that she hates getting her nails trimmed".  And she adds, "I am desperate to find her a forever home where she can get the love and attention she deserves. My heart breaks that I can't keep her but I just can't handle another dog on top of my current 3 and 3 children. Please help."

Sammy - Adopted

Owner Info:  Sammy is a very handsome and very happy terrier mix with diabetes and cataracts.  He has one ear up and one ear down!  His owner has recently passed away, and a very good friend of his owner's is trying to find him (and the other dogs and cats), new homes.  Sammy is diabetic and requires two insulin shots daily.  He is housebroken and leash trained and good with both other dogs and cats.  He is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, and has never shown any aggression.  He has never bitten or snapped.   His caregiver writes, "He runs and plays like a puppy!   He is extremely friendly and happy just needs a good home with a little extra attention".  Besides the diabetes and cataracts, she notes that he seems to be in good health.  Sammy is still living in the owner's home, and his caregiver goes there several times a day to check on him.  She says, "Sammy can only stay in his current home until it is sold for estate purposes. July/August", and she adds, "He's extremely lovable/playful and energetic."
