Name: Mika (Meeka)
Age: 15 years
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Pekingese
Location: Nashville, TN
Vet Info: Mika is
confirmed spayed and had her three-year rabies vaccine on 4/18/14. She is
heartworm negative and her owner uses monthly heartworm and flea
preventative. Mika had both eyes enucleated in February, 2015. She
weighs about 12 pounds.
Owner Info: Mika's owner is
heartbroken, but feels Mika would do better in a new home. Mika is a
gorgeous blind senior, and may also be deaf. Her owner writes, "She
is 15 and has been a sweet companion but I have a 3 year old son and after my
divorce we moved and mika is not doing well in our current home. I have a
longer commute and though I can't find where she is having accidents she is now
wetting her bed and sleeping in it. I think if she had someone with more time
that could be remedied but leaving her out in a fenced in area isn't for her
either as she gets too frightened if left out too long." Mika is
an indoor dog confined to one area of the house, she is housebroken and leash
trained, although her owner wrote that her vet thought Mika may be having accidents
in her bed because she may be afraid to get out of bed. Mika is a sweet and
gentle little girl and good with people of all ages. She is not
possessive of toys, treats, or food. Mika's owner checked that she is
good with female dogs and was raised with other dogs and cats, but doesn't live
with any currently. Mika has only been around one male dog, and her owner
writes that they got on very well! Mika used to warn her owner's son with
a growl before she went blind, but has become very quiet since her eyes were
removed. Her owner writes, "now she rarely even growls even if he
puts a hat on her". She also told us, "She had glaucoma
we didn't know though she had very regular vet visits. It was too far gone when
discovered. They said she had been blind for a while ..... I don't believe she
had been blind as the dog I brought home was not the same dog. She had been
playing daily with a large bulldog and was no longer able to play or find her
way around." When answering if your dog adapts well to new situations
despite his/her visual impairment, Mika's owner told us, "Yes, but she
had been able to walk herself with a doggie door and now she can't so that has
been an adjustment but with more availability to be walked I think she would do
well. She finds her way to her two beds, her food and water but not back to the
patio when she walks herself. She doesn't do as well on a leash now because she
wants to walk in circles to find her way around."
