Dudley - Adopted

Name: Dudley
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Cocker Spaniel
Age: 10 years
Location: Carthage, IL

Vet/Medical Info: Dudley is neutered and UTD on vaccines including kennel cough, distemper, parvo and rabies. Dudley had been treated for heartworm in June 2005, and they have not sold any heartworm preventative recently, so they could NOT say he's heartworm negative. Owner may have bought HeartGuard or other preventative somewhere else. Dudley has NOT been tested for heartworm by them. Dudley has been blind since birth, only other medical information was he's been on antibiotics occasionally, for skin condition.

Owner Info: Dudley's owner has to move to Chicago to live with and become caregiver for her 90 year old mother who has alzheimers and has recently suffered two strokes. Her Mom has always been deathly afraid of dogs and her current condition makes her fear of dogs worse and there is no reasoning with her anymore. Dudley's owner has contacted several different rescue organizations and through their efforts, networked with many people who have in turn been contacting their resources. Many emails have been sent and received and many phone calls made. She has put the word out with all her friends, neighbors, church members and acquaintances. Dudley was rescued 6 years ago from a Hearts of Hancock (which no longer exists), they rescued him from being euthanized, removed the collar that had grown into the back of his neck, groomed him, had him neutered and they adopted him from them. His first 4 years of life appear to have been miserable, he was evidently neglected and mistreated, found wandering around with no tags, matted, and obviously having had to fend for himself for quite a while. Dudley is very mild mannered, he does not have any interest in toys. He is an indoor dog with the run of the house, is housebroken but not leash trained. He is good with all people, other dogs and cats. He adapts very well, has been boarded and traveled. Uses his nose like a blind person would use their cane to "feel" his way around and to judge how high he needs to jump up into the car etc. He is very "laid back" and friendly, loves visitors and going out to visit friends. Dudley was diagnosed 6 years ago with impaired optic plates but was still able to see some movement and distinguish light/dark. Developed cataracts 2 years ago and now is totally blind, he relies on his acute sense of smell and hearing.  He has been well cared for and had a wonderful life and received much love and everything he could possibly want or need since then. It's very painful for his owner to have to give him up since she just lost her husband to cancer 1 year ago. It breaks her heart to have to consider having him PTS because she can't find a home for him.
