Name: Lily
Age: Five years
Breed: Double Dapple Dachshund
Sex: Female

Location: Charlotte, NC

Sosa - Outcome Unknown

Name: Sosa
Age: 1-2 years old
Breed: Mixed Breed
Sex: Female (altered per rescuer, not yet confirmed)
Location: Nashville, TN area

Vet Info: Sosa is spayed, up to date on vaccines, and heartworm negative per her rescuer, but this has not yet been confirmed.  Sosa weighs about 40 pounds.

Owner Info: Sosa is a beautiful and fun little girl who was saved from an owner who could not care for her properly, and where she had to stay in a crate the vast majority of the time.  Sosa's rescuer had always intended on finding Sosa a new home or rescue, and is very much hoping we'll have placement for her.  She has had Sosa for about two weeks.

Sosa is an indoor dog who is crated.  She is housebroken, but not leash trained.  Sosa is a sweet and friendly girl, and is good with people of all ages, male and female dogs, and cats.  She currently lives with three dogs and one cat.

Sosa is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, but does play bite when playing.  Her rescuer writes, "I have never seen nor heard about Sosa biting or snapping at anyone as an act of aggression, but she play bites when she gets hyper. She is usually very gentle when she does it. The only time it has ever been an issue is when she gets too worked up and won't stop play biting without being pulled away and told "No!" very firmly. I think a little training and a little growing up time will easily fix this issue."

Sosa adjust well to new situations and her rescuer gave us more details:  "Yes, she seems to adapt very quickly. She has moved from home to home a few times, so she is accustomed to being in new environments. It only took her a few hours to start acting comfortable in my home once I brought her here, and within a day or so she had pretty much learned the layout of the house and how to interact with my other dogs."

Sosa is not completely blind, but does see better in well lit areas. Her rescuer also told us more about Sosa's health.  "I do not think Sosa is not completely blind as she definitely does better in well lit areas, however, I do believe that her vision is minimal at best because, even with plenty of light, she still runs into things sometimes. I do not know for certain what caused her visual impairment, but the person with whom she was living previously told me that she thought it may be due to Sosa being hit by a car at some point in her life. Again though, I do not know this for certain....Sosa is very thin, but eats very well and has never (at least not any time recently) been in a situation where she was not being fed. She makes odd sounds when she eats or pants which makes me think she may have some kind of windpipe damage or issue from the past. Luckily, it does not seem to affect her ability to eat, drink, or breathe, or have any impact on her quality of life."

Sosa's rescuer wants us to know she's a very sweet little girl who deserves a loving family and home of her own!  "Sosa is a very sweet girl with lots of love to give. She would make a great family pet, and is not at all difficult to take care of even though she has a visual impairment. This pup has been through a lot in her short life so far, so I am very eager to find the perfect forever home where she can get all the affection and play time she needs and deserves."

Update 5/14/16: Sosa escaped from her yard and they have not been able to find her.

Farkle - Adopted

Name: Farkle
Sex: Male (not altered)
Age: 11 years
Breed: English Springer Spaniel
Location: Madison, WI area

Vet Info: Farkle is not neutered and has not had a recent heartworm test.  He is due for his next rabies vaccine on November 9th.  Farkle weighs 56 pounds.

Owner Info: DOB 11/4/2004. Farkle is a gorgeous English Springer Spaniel whose family is no longer able to take care of him.  They write that he has high anxiety, and requires more attention and time than they can give him.  Farkle was originally adopted from a friend whose other dogs did not like Farkle.

Farkle's owners tell us his eyes are very foggy.  "He is not quite completely blind but I think he is very close", and they gave us more details about his health:  "Farkle has a slow growing tumor in his groin region, almost deaf, and severe anxiety.....As far as we know Farkle has always had anxiety problems. Anxiety medication does help him but he is not currently on it (it's a very cheap drug if a potential adopter asks). Farkle paces a lot and aimlessly walks around, panting, and finds himself in trouble when he thinks he is alone. Trouble including sitting in window sills and trying to get through them as well as eating garbage. He WILL chew through and escape wire kennels."

Farkle is an indoor dog with run of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained.  He is good with both men and women and male and female dogs.  His owners tell us he sometimes lives with another dog.  Farkle is not possessive of toys, treats, or food and has never bitten or snapped.

Farkle's owners also want us to know that he's a real sweetheart, and loves to snuggle!  He'll make a great lap warmer!  "Farkle is an extremely happy go-lucky guy. In his last few years of life he will need a home in which someone can be with him most-all of the time due to his anxiety. He is a great snuggler! He prefers women but gets along with men as well. He doesn't mind other animals, but sometimes they don't like him."

Bama

Name: Bama
Age: Unknown
Breed: Poodle
Sex: Male (not altered)
Location: Montgomery, AL area

Vet Info: Bama is not neutered, but is scheduled for a neuter at the end of October.  He received a one-year rabies vaccine on October 3, 2015.  He had bloodwork done shortly after that, and all looks good!  Bama is heartworm negative. Bama weighs about 11 pounds.
Owner Info: Bama is an adorable and sweet fellow who was taken off the road by a good samaritan before he was hit by cars.  She tells us he appeared to not have been taken care of within the last eight to twelve months, and an owner was not found.  His good samaritan has taken him to the vet and cleaned him up, and is now contacting rescues to try to find him a wonderful home!

Bama is an indoor dog with run of the house, he is housebroken and they gave us more details:  "He is kept indoors and crated at night or when we are gone from the house for more than 5 hrs."  Bama is not leash trained.   He appears completely blind.

Bama is good with men, women, and children, and other dogs and cats.  He currently lives with three other dogs and three cats.  His good samaritan told us that he can be possessive of food, but only when he thinks someone around him is trying to get his food.  "Tends to be possessive with food but only when he thinks someone is around him trying to get his food, yes has growled/jumped up at my two big dogs like he was startled. Skin was not broken I believe he was startled has happened twice almost like he was sleeping relaxed and my other two like to play a lot and I think they startled him."

Bama has made progress with his good samaritan and is now eating well.  "Was unable to eat dry food when we brought him home but we have mixed it in with the can food and he is eating better with having it mixed and now he gets more dry mixed in with can is doing much better."

His good samaritan writes that he has adapted well, but they have an active house, and it may be too much for him.  "I think he has adapted well but with such an active household of 6 other pets and two children we may be too much for him and that is why we are reaching out....We only want the best for him and if our home wasn't so active we would probably keep him but it is evident that he is struggling with all the activity that we have."

Romeo - Outcome Unknown

Name: Romeo
Age: 6 years
Breed: Mini Schnauzer
Sex: Male (neuter not yet confirmed)
Location: Fort Worth, TX

Vet Info: Romeo is neutered per his owner, but this has not yet been confirmed.  Romeo is also up to date on vaccines and heartworm negative per his owner.  Romeo weighs about 15 or 17 pounds.

Owner Info: Romeo is a very handsome and friendly mini Schnauzer who needs to be rehomed very quickly.  Romeo's owner has moved in with family for health and mobility reasons and her home has been placed on the market.  The closing is in two weeks, and they are all in a panic because after that, Romeo will have nowhere to go.

Romeo is an outdoor dog with a fenced yard, he is housebroken but not leash trained.  Romeo is a very friendly boy and is good with people of all ages, other dogs, and cats.  He is not possessive of toys, treats, or food and has never bitten or snapped.

Romeo's owner's daughter in law has reached out to us for help.  Please read her heartfelt plea below:

"I am emailing on behalf of my mother in law.  She rescued a mini schnauzer about 6 years ago and he is blind.  The vet felt that after looking at his eyes he could have possibly been poisoned in his first year of life.

Romeo (is almost 7) and LOVES to be outside.  His one bad habit is marking while outside. I feel he does this more as a like a bread-crumb trail so that he knows how to get back to the porch.  There is currently a bigger lab mix that is his sidekick. Romeo uses him as his eyes and follows him a lot, though he is completely fine to wander on his own (as the marking in the yard I guess makes him feel more secure with walking off without the other dog).

He has always had a doggie door and goes in and out. We find it odd that he only marks outside (95% of the time).

There was a neighbor dog that had Hook Worms so immediately an appt was made to have him checked out and a full blood panel was done and thankfully nothing came back.

I am sorry for rambling, the reason I am emailing is that we know Romeo’s fate if he is surrendered to an animal shelter and I cannot bear the thought of doing anything like that. We are desperately looking for a rescue group that would welcome Romeo’s sweet face and allow him to live his life."

Annie

Name: Annie
Age: 8 years
Breed: Part Corgi
Sex: Female (altered per owner, not confirmed)
Location: Marietta, GA

Vet Info: Annie is spayed, up to date on vaccines and heartworm negative per her owner, but this has not been confirmed.  Her owner also wrote that Annie has had a dental.  Annie weighs about 30 pounds.

Owner Info: Annie is a beautiful girl who was adopted from an animal shelter about a month ago.  Her owner is disabled and can no longer take care of her.  She is desperate to find Annie a new home as soon as possible.  Annie should be considered very urgent.

Annie is an indoor dog with run of the house, she is not housebroken, but is leash trained.  She knows the command, sit.  Annie is described as outgoing!  Annie's owner tells us she's very sweet, and is not possessive of toys, treats, or food.  She has never bitten or snapped.  Annie doesn't live with any other animals currently.  Annie's owner says that Annie is blind in both eyes, and is in good health.

Annie's owner is desperately hoping we can help Annie.

Update 10/15/15:  Annie has been to the vet twice.  One time was for her dental and the second time was for a urine test.  Annie's owner notes that Annie does need to pee frequently and usually pees outside, but may pee in the house.  No UTI was found at the test.  The vet's office did not have a record of vaccines or HW testing, and was not able to confirm Annie's spay. Annie's blindness is due to cataracts.

As far as her owner knows, Annie is good with male and female dogs.  She's also good with men and women as well as older children.  Her owner says she's very friendly!  Annie may not be good with young children or cats/small animals, but this is not known for sure.

Missy - In BDRA Foster Care

Name: Missy
Age: Estimated 6-7 years
Breed: Bichon Mix
Sex: Female (not altered)
Location: Philadelphia, PA

Vet Info: As far as we know, Missy is not spayed, is not up to date on vaccines, has not had a recent heartworm test.  Missy's good samaritan writes, "She may have cushings (some hair loss, not confirmed by blood work) and she has tumors that have not been tested for cancer."  Missy weighs 21 pounds.

Owner Info: Missy is a beautiful girl with a sad story.  Her owner went into the hospital and Missy was alone for four days.  Missy was saved by a good samaritan, and she tells us,  "Previous owner is hospitalized and needs to go to a nursing home. I went out with a locksmith when I learned of situation; she had been alone 4 days."  Missy's good samaritan is not able to keep Missy and is desperately hoping for rescue.  Missy was very upset and frightened when she was found, and her good samaritan has brought her to the vet and to be groomed.  She wants to give Missy this chance to find a new home!  Missy appears completely blind, and her good samaritan tells us,  "I'm told she doesn't make tears and that her eyes pigmented over; I'm told that her eye lashes may be growing inward and that surgery may help." Missy is an indoor dog who is crated, she is housebroken and leash trained.  She's a smart little girl, and is learning the commands, Step, Kisses, Go for a walk, Dinner time, Get your leash, and Up (she loves to be held and will jump into your arms or onto your lap!) Missy is described as outgoing, and is not possessive of toys, treats, or food.  Her good samaritan has a large lab, and she gave us more details about how they are together:  "I have a 60 lb yellow lab mix and he is tolerating her; he's cautious of her. She follows him on walks. He is trained without a leash to voice commands and she follows him. She listens for him and likes to follow him....Growled at my dog when she was sitting on my lap once, but now they both can sit almost on top of me, each trying to get closer." Missy is also learning her new routine!  "She was never crate-trained, but I didn't want to give her the run of the house because I don't know her at all. My husband was trying to put her back into the crate and she didn't want to go in and she snapped at him and got his hand. Small nip, one small puncture wound. My husband wasn't fazed. I have been holding her and putting her down inside the crate before she knows what happens so she is fine with me. She doesn't like the crate, but is ok. It's been a week and she is tolerating it....She likes the car and the groomers and the vet. She wags her tail and approaches dogs and people very friendly, loves to be held and petted. She likes walks and listens when I give her warnings or call her back - I have been using an extender leash. she responds to tugs on the leash and seems to understand "Step" She seems to have learned my laundry room and den living area and to navigate steps into the kitchen." Missy's good samaritan wants to share how much progress she's made in only a week!  "As you can see from the photos, she loves being a lap dog and gets comfortable and falls asleep almost immediately in your lap.  She is fine with my dog.  She does the happy dance whenever you talk to her.  She is able to do the steps and walks on the leash ok, but needs guidance....She is a little love, loves the car and has started to give me kisses on demand. It's been a week and she trusts me!"

Max - Adopted

Name: Max
Age: Approximately 1 year
Breed: Yellow Labrador
Sex: Male (confirmed altered)
Location: Todd County, MN

Vet Info: Max had a rabies injection in June 2015 and is confirmed neutered.  He has not had a recent heartworm test.  Max weighs about 80 pounds.

Owner Info: Max is an adorable young fellow who was saved about six months ago.  His owner writes, "We have 2 other dogs in our home and they all got along fine for quite awhile, now we don't know why but Max and our small older dog don't get along and have become aggressive with each other. Max is about 80 pounds and our small dog is about 18 so when this happens Max hurts the other dog. He gets along great with our other dog and cats. We love Max and wish we could keep him but we have tried everything we know to try. At this point we have to keep them separated which is becoming very difficult and unfair to the dogs as they don't get the attention that they deserve."  They are very much hoping for rescue as soon as possible for Max. Max was originally rescued while they were on vacation in Texas.  His original owners were going to shoot him, possibly because Max was born blind.  Max's current owners say it seems he can see shadows when it's very light out. Max is an indoor and outdoor dog with a fenced yard, he is housebroken but not leash trained.  He is described as outgoing, and good with people of all ages.  Max is good with most dogs and cats, and currently lives with two male dogs and three cats.  Max is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, but he and the smaller male dog do not get along, as described above. His owners tell us that Max loves people and he is very sweet!  He's a smart fellow, too, and knows the commands, Sit, Potty, and Kisses.  And they write that Max does well in new situations.  "It is rather impressive how well he gets around!"

Baby Able - URGENT!

Name: Baby Able
Age: 11 weeks
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: Australian Shepherd
Location: Murfreesboro, TN area

Vet Info: Recently been to vet, got a clean bill of health, his first puppy shot and first Heart Guard treatment.

Owner Info: My husband and I rescued a blind-deaf Aussie puppy from an irresponsible breeder on Craigslist.  We have had him about two weeks and had him vet checked.  We didn't expect to keep this puppy but we agreed we had to get him away from this person and get him into the right hands!  He is a typical puppy (just 11 weeks old) and a typical Aussie... He nips and jumps and being blind and deaf, he needs a qualified person to train him to be a safe family member.  I am 51 and have difficult diabetes as well as Multiple Sclerosis.  I have very bad balance and difficulty walking.  Baby "Able" is very much a trip / fall hazard for me so we must get him into rescue ASAP.   I MUST get rest and remove added stressors.  This baby boy has definitely been a source of stress and worry the past two weeks. We knew it would be difficult but we were determined to help him!  I literally cannot take even one safe step because of him constantly at my feet nipping or jumping on or in front of me.  Bless his heart, he just wants to play and communicate....he's very smart, he learned immediately to "sit" for a treat with a gentle tap on his back end! We are desperate to get him moved to a rescue ASAP as my health is a major concern. I'm the only one who has been home with him during the day and I'm supposed to be resting now. Thank you so much for your help!

Autumn - In Foster Care

Name: Autumn
Breed:  Hound/Beagle Mix
Sex: Female (unknown if altered)
Age: Estimated 10-12 years
Location: Johnson City, TN area

Vet Info: She has just been to the vet, she is approximately 10-12 years old.  She weighs 38 lbs and is about 10-15 lbs underweight. No parasites evident, she does have an ear infection which they will be treating.  No HW test was performed.

Owner Info: One of our volunteers was notified by her vet about this dog.  A woman found her as a stray wandering in traffic. The woman stopped and picked her up and brought her to the vet to see if she was microchipped (and she is not). She is blind - estimate between 8 - 10 years old....maybe a hound/beagle mix?  The woman's guess on weight was about 40 lbs...but the dog is very skinny. Very skinny, no collar.  The woman is going to take her to her vet and will keep the dog for a little bit, so the dog is safe for now. The woman has 6 dogs of her own with 3 small kids.  Our volunteer asked if she could keep the dog separate from her dogs / kids and provide a quiet / safe area for her to regain her strength which she can and will. She's doing well - she's eating, drinking, sleeping and just wants to be loved.

They can only keep her until Tuesday, October 6 as they are leaving to go out of town. Any foster homes available?

Update 10/3/15:  She is good with both men and women, but is startled by her good samaritan's small children and likely needs quiet time to recover and feel safe. Her good samaritan tells us she's very friendly!  "She seems to be adapting well. She is very friendly. As long as you let her know you are there, she wags her tail and begs for a belly rub."

The cause of her blindness is unknown, and her good samaritan tells us she appears completely blind.  She also shared more details about her vet visit.  "She appears to be completely blind, but the vet was not sure what caused her blindness. She has cataracts, but they aren't bad enough to be causing the blindness.... She is 10 - 15 pounds underweight. The vet believes she just hasn't been able to find food. Blood work would need to be done to rule out other issues. She has an ear infection - meds received from vet to start treating. Since bringing her into our home she has been eating, drinking, voiding and having normal bowel movements. No parasites were found in her stool sample. Unknown as to whether or not she has been spayed. No visible scars noted to indicate surgery."

Update 10/16/15:  This beautiful girl now has a beautiful name... .Autumn!  One of our foster homes had a chance to spend several days with Autumn while her good samaritan was away.

“I've had Autumn from Saturday to Thursday am.  The person who found Autumn went on vacation and returned Wednesday night.  I gave Autumn back to her Thursday at 10:00. but wanted to give an update on her.  She does not want to take Autumn to the shelter as she would be put down.  Autumn definitely belonged to someone, she is very comfortable in the house, knows how to walk on leash and loves all people.

She is wonderful - a total love.  Will flip over for belly rubs almost as soon as you start petting her.  She ate well and definitely is gaining some weight.  Her ears seem to be clearing up but still has goop coming out when I put the meds in (2x / day).

I've kept her separate from my guys - however, I did want to test her with this aggression because it doesn't seem to fit her personality.

On Saturday, my boxer, Bear and Sunny (my Aussie) were in the screened in porch (we have rails up also so no one can go through the screen).  We have a deck next to the porch so Autumn and I walked up to the screen.  She was definitely aggressive but it seemed more like a defensive aggression.  So I removed her from the deck.

On Sunday, we tried again and she walked up to the screen and nothing....her tail was wagging, she was smelling the air, but absolutely no aggression.

Monday and Tuesday, I did it again - each time, no aggression.  Tail wagging and head high smelling the air.

On Wednesday and Thursday, I brought the crate into the living room and put her in it, then brought Bear into the room.  Bear walked up to the crate and Autumn was wagging her tail with no sign of aggression again.  She wasn't happy being in the crate, but no aggression towards Bear. I put Bear on the other side of the gate, which blocks the living room from the rest of the house.  Bear was with Sunny on the opposite side of the gate.  I let Autumn out of the crate, put her on leash and walked her up to the gate.  Again, tail was wagging and no sign of aggression. I kept her with me in the living room all day on Wednesday and Hero, Sunny and Bear have come up to the gate to see her and she hasn't paid any mind to any of them.  She's been walking around the room and goes past the gate often - will stop and smell, then continues on her way.  I put her back in the expen in the living room and let the other dogs wander around her and still no reaction.

My thoughts on this:  I think she is newly blind, out on her own for God knows how long, and she's been scared.  I don't think she would be dog aggressive given the proper slow introductions.  The foster home would just have to take it slow with her.  The vet that saw her thinks she has a lesion somewhere between her eyes and brain, no significant cataracts.  I'm not sure if the lesion will heal and she'll regain some or all of her sight or if she would need some other type of treatment.

She loves squeeky toys!

If anyone can foster this sweet old girl, please send an email to the foster team.”

Update 10/22/15: Autumn continues to do well!  Please read her update below, and check out her beautiful new photo!  Autumn is still waiting to find rescue or a new home.

"Autumn is doing very well!! She continues to eat well so she has some meat on her bones now :)  She LOVES her belly rubs!! She's a big lap dog who really needs someone who has more time for her. With 3 little boys and 6 dogs of our own we feel bad that we don't have more time for her. We are really hoping we can find the perfect forever home for her - she is super sweet and deserves the best!!  We really appreciate all your help."

Update 11/12/15: Peggy has heard from Autumn's good samaritans, and they're not able to keep her much longer.  Autumn is becoming urgent!  Peggy writes, "The people that found her can't keep her much longer and she'll be turned into the shelter here.  The shelter won't keep her long as she is blind, so I'd say she's now coming close to critical."
