Jovie - Adopted

Name: Jovie
Age: 2 years
Breed: Labrador Mix
Sex: Female (altered)
Location: New Castle County, DE

Vet Info: Jovie is confirmed spayed and up to date on vaccines.  She is next due for the rabies vaccine on 7/1/2019.  Jovie has not had a recent heartworm test.  She weighs about 45 pounds.

Owner Info: Jovie is a beautiful girl whose owners are moving across the country shortly and cannot take her with them.  She is currently staying with a friend's mother, but the friend's mother is now saying Jovie is too much for her to handle.  Jovie's owner gave us more information about Jovie's current home:  "Jovie was very relaxed with us slept a lot of the time, every now and again would play with our children, but that doesn’t seem to be what the situation is at her new home. She seems to be anxious and nervous."  There are no children in her current home.

Jovie's owner tells us Jovie is a very friendly girl, about 75% blind and 50% deaf from birth.  She is an indoor dog with run of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained.  She's good with people of all ages, male and female dogs, and cats!  Jovie is not possessive of toys, treats, or food and has never shown any aggression.

Jovie's owner writes that she's had three different homes since she was rescued one year ago, and she's done well adjusting for the most part, although she doesn't do well on long car rides.  She also tells us that Jovie is very healthy other than her sight and hearing.  And she wants us to know that Jovie is a great snuggle partner!

Ricky

Name: Ricky
Age: 4 years
Breed: Pit Bull Mix
Sex: Male (altered)
Location: Fort Wayne, IN

Vet Info: Ricky is confirmed neutered and up to date on vaccines.  He is heartworm negative.  Ricky weighs about 70 pounds.

Owner Info: Ricky is a gorgeous fellow who is looking for a new home. His owners love him very much, but know he will better as an only dog.  Ricky was originally adopted from a shelter, and his owners have had him for 1 1/2 years.  He loves cuddling with people on the couch, laying in the sunshine, napping, and chew toys!  Please read more about this very handsome fellow below.

Ricky is completely blind.  His owners write that his eyes will move towards sound and function like regular eyes, but they just don't see.  They are not sure if he was born blind or became blind at an early age.  "According to the shelter Ricky was seen by a veterinary doctor to assess whether or not he could undergo a procedure to give him back his sight. It was determined that it's not an operable condition."

Ricky is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house.  He is housebroken and leash trained.  He's also a very smart fellow and knows many commands and phrases, such as "sit, down, step (to help him expect a step up or down), by me (used while out walking to reduce injury or pulling). He is crate trained and knows the word "cage" - he will go directly to his cage to lay down upon command."  His owners also tell us he uses his other senses very well in a new situation.  "Once he gets the lay of the land (boundaries, steps, fences, smells, people, etc.) he is comfortable and will set into a routine."

Ricky is good with men, women, older children/teenagers, and cats.  He can be possessive of toys, treats, or food, and can be aggressive towards other dogs when he gets anxious.   Ricky's owners gave us more details about his behavior:   "We believe when things are a little unknown or we get thrown off the routine (timing and perhaps guests are over) Ricky gets anxious. Any dog that ends up in his path at that time is subject to his aggressive reaction."

Ricky's owners have also shared a detailed write-up:

Ricky, a pit bull terrier mix (70lbs), is 4 years old and loves his people. Ricky is blind, but uses his other senses very well. Ricky understands many commands and phrases such as sit, down, step (to help him expect a step up or down), by me (used while out walking to reduce injury or pulling). He also has learned to navigate stairs. Ricky loves chewing on toys and is a strong chewer, so Nyla or Benebones are great. He also enjoys fetch using a ball that makes noise. Ricky has been in a house with 3 other dogs and 2 cats. The cats come and go and he may take a sniff or two, but they don't occupy his time. The majority of the time Ricky engages with his humans rather than other dogs, unless he's cuddling with one. However, Ricky will startle easily if bumped into by another dog which can lead to conflict, so we highly recommend a home for Ricky without other dogs or small children. Ricky thinks he's a lap dog most of the time and will lay with his people on a couch or bed. He loves napping and laying in the sunshine. Ricky can get excited easily and sometimes doesn't know his own strength, but letting him run in a fenced in backyard helps with his bursts of energy. He is crate trained and knows the word "cage" - he will go directly to his cage to lay down upon command. This dog is a phenomenal companion who has been tremendously loved, but is in need of a calm house and owner set on routines to curb Ricky's reactions to unexpected events. He is up to date on all vaccinations.

Master Chief - In Memory

Name: Master Chief
Age: 2 years
Breed: Pure Blue Heeler
Sex: Male (altered)
Location: St. Louis, MO area

Vet Info: Master Chief's owner writes that he's neutered and up to date on his rabies vaccine, but this has not yet been confirmed.  He has not had a recent heartworm test.  He weighs about 36 pounds.

Owner Info: DOB 8/9/14. Master Chief is a very handsome fellow who has had difficulty since becoming blind a few months ago.  His owner writes that he's become skittish, and the other dog in the home bullies him.  He's also had a few seizures since going blind, and she is unable to pay for a neuro consult.  His owner doesn't feel she can give him the support or home necessary for his issues as she works 10 hours a day.  She is desperately hoping we can help Master Chief. She has tried family and friends with no luck.

She gave us more detailed information about Master Chief's issues:  "Master Chief has difficulty since going blind. He has become skittish to touch. He can't play with his sister (his litter mate) because she tends to bully him now. Unfortunately his sister likes to "trap" Chief in the bathroom. Chief has also seemed to become afraid of going outside therefore he is using to bathroom inside the house most of the time. We have had a doggy door since we got our pups and potty accidents were unheard of until he went blind. I do not know the cause of his blindness. He has had a few seizures since he has gone blind. Unfortunately I do not have the income for a neuro consult. Chief does have some very playful moments and will try to run in his memorized path in the house....I have accidentally been in his way during one of his runs and almost been knocked down. He has also become very "mouthy" since his vision loss...I understand this is normal in dogs. He has always been an extremely loving pup but he seems to have lost his ability to accept cuddles or love without freaking out when touched unless he is very tired. He will cuddle when he wants but it has to be on his terms and you can't try to cuddle him back or he will move away. I just don't feel like I can give him the support or home necessary for his issues.I work 10 hr days and dread coming home at times because it is normally coming home to a mess. He doesn't do well in a kennel. I have tried to put him in the bathroom while I go to work but he still poops in the bathroom and then rolls/spreads it all over the bathroom. Chief needs more direct care and more one on one time."

Master Chief is an indoor dog with run out the house.  He is not currently housebroken or leash trained.  He's a smart fellow and knows the commands, Sit, No, Lay Down, Go To Your Room, and Up (get on the couch)!

Chief is good with men, women, and older children.  He is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, and has never bitten or snapped.  His owner gave us more details about how he is with other dogs:  "Chief does not have issues with other dogs. He loves other animals. He just doesn't know how to act because he frightens so easily. He doesn't bite when he scares.....he just leaps and backs up into whatever he can."

Chief has gone blind in both eyes over the past few months, and his owner is not sure of the cause.  She writes, "He has not had any official eye exam however the vet also agreed that he is blind in both eyes now."

Chief will likely need some adjustment time in a new environment. "...we haven't tried to take him anywhere other than the vet since he lost his vision. He's afraid to go anywhere now."

Chief is a very sweet fellow and has so much love to give!  "He was a very energetic and outgoing pup until he lost his eyesight. He sleeps with his "daddy" every night...he does not like to sleep alone. His daddy has been sleeping on the couch for a few months because Chief is scared of going up stairs. He needs love...good and patient and educated love."

"Please help find him a home"

Dioji

Name: Dioji (pronounced D.O.G.)
Age: 1 ½ years
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: Australian Shepherd
Location: Cullman County, AL

Vet Info: Dioji is not neutered and has not been heartworm tested.  He received a one-year rabies vaccine on 6/4/16.  Dioji weighs between 20 and 30 pounds.  His good samaritan writes, "He is smaller than most Australian Shepherds I've seen. His brother is bigger than him."

Owner Info: DOB 3/17/15. Dioji is a gorgeous half blind and deaf Australian Shepherd who was saved by a good samaritan because his owners were going to kill him.  His good samaritan has had several animals with disabilities, but she's never had a blind and deaf animal.  She knows Dioji needs more training and vetting than she's able to give.  She writes, "Circumstances beyond my control have rested on me and it has been hard to give him the time he deserves.... He deserves better than I can do."  She has had Dioji for 16 months, since he was a puppy.

Dioji is an outdoor dog in a pen.  His good samaritan gave us more details about how he's doing:  "He has been in a pen. I fixed my basement driveway into a pen. It is 26x40. It is concrete. They had two dog houses but he chewed them up. His toys didn't last long either. I try to keep him with something to chew.  He has been in and out of the house (only had two pee accidents) but I have not trained him. I know he is smart enough to learn. He has been on a leash a few times. He rolls at first but then calms down and will walk with you. He has always been around another dog, they help to guide him even though he can see a little. He loves the companionship."

Dioji is a very sweet fellow and has never showed any aggression.  He is not possessive of toys, treats, or food.  Dioji is good with people of all ages, male dogs, and cats.  We asked how he was with female dogs, and his good samaritan wrote, "I don't know about female dogs because he hasn't been around any.  We have two male dogs. They run with him when we let them out."

Dioji's good samaritan tells us he is healthy and eats well, and gave us more information about his blindness.  "He can see out of one eye (tunnel vision) he has tried to herd the cat. He can't hear, we have a bell on him so we can hear where he is at.... I was told one eye has tunnel vision. The other eye is blind. He is deaf, although when my daughter is near he will come to her every time she calls him. She can do a high pitched voice that he must be able to hear."

Dioji's good samaritan wants us to know what a sweet boy he is and how she is hoping we can find him a loving family.  "He is a good and loving dog. I have had several blind animals but never one that is deaf also. He needs someone that has the time and commitment to love him and train him. I don't know how to help him. He deserves better and so does his dog brother. I used to be able to afford the vet, I am embarrassed to say I can't afford that now. He was the runt, so he is smaller. He stands a little above my knee which is 16-17 inches. He loves to run. l hope you can find the best family for him, he deserves it."

Luna - In Memory

Location: North Potomac, MD

Her owner writes, "My husband and I separated, and while she stayed in the home she lived her whole life, she is by herself all day. It wasn't a problem in the past, but now that she is blind, I believe she's become very depressed. She would do much better in a home with more dogs, kids and people around her constantly." She also shares that, "We have shared custody of the dog and we take her from one house to the other when one of us travels for work. Lately, she's been doing better in closed off areas like the kitchen when she's home alone, just because of her impairment." Owner Info: Joey is an adorable little fellow whose owner has suffered a hardship and can no longer afford to care for him.  Joey will need a quiet and patient home with no children who can work with him on his issues, and they're desperately hoping we can help!

Homer

Name: Homer
Age: Approximately 6 years
Sex: Male (not yet altered)
Breed: Shepard Mix
Location: Jasper, AL

Vet Info: Homer is not yet neutered. According to his good Samaritan, he is up to date on vaccines and is heartworm positive. Homer weighs around 65 pounds.  Homer's foster mom writes that Homer is completely blind, according to the Vet he was seen by. They plan on neutering him within the next few weeks and then starting him on HW medication.

Owner Info: Homer was picked up by a rescue group after he was found wandering the streets and is currently being fostered by one of their volunteers. They are hoping to find another foster for him and eventually a forever home.

He is currently an outdoor dog with a fenced dog. He is housebroken and leash trained. The foster mom reports that he is an outgoing guy who is good with men, women, teenagers and younger children. However, he doesn't care for other dogs as much. "He gets really nervous when other dogs come up to him and gets defensive and starts to growl. When I tried to introduce him to my dogs, when they began to come up to him and sniff he got extremely nervous and tucked his tail. After a few seconds he began to growl and snapped at them to get them away."

His foster mom also says that he adjusts fairly well to new situations. "When I'm at work he either stays in a 10x10 kennel in my yard or on my porch which is closed in as well. He seems to feel very comfortable in either place right from the beginning when I got him. I also let him come inside my house very often. He doesn't try to walk around very much after he bumps into a few things and seems to be a little nervous when walking on the hardwood floors. However after he got used to a particular comforter he began sleeping on, I can now move it from room to room and that is his safe spot where he likes to lay. I feel as long as he has some type of bed he can get familiar with that he is comfortable wherever he is placed."

His foster Mom has many good things to say about sweet Homer. She said that "Homer is an extremely loving, sweet dog. He would be perfect for anyone looking for a calm, easy going companion. He loves being petted and going on walks with his leash. It is amazing to see how much a leash can make his confidence grow when he knows your guiding him, he wants to go fast and smell everything. Overall one of the kindest and definitely low maintenance dogs I've ever had."

Rocky

Name: Rocky
Age: Approximately 3 years
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: Labrador/Pit Bull Mix
Location: Central Florida

Vet Info: Rocky is not neutered. He is current with vaccinations. He is heartworm negative. One of the vets that Rocky was taken to felt that Rocky had some kind of trauma to his head which was the cause of his blindness. Rocky weighs 45 pounds.
Owner Info: Rocky is a young lab/pit mix who is currently being fostered by a rescue but he needs someone knowledgeable about blind dogs who can help him adjust. He has been with the rescue about two and a half years and has been in two different foster homes but neither has been a good fit. Rocky was rescued from the county animal control and they found him wandering the streets.
Rocky is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house. He is micro-chipped. He is house-broken and leash-trained. He has not had formal training but he knows the commands, sit and shake hands. He is outgoing and good with men, women, and teenagers. Rocky is not possessive of toys, treats, or food and has never shown aggression towards people. The rescue also says that Rocky has adapted well to new surroundings when he has been moved.

Wonder - Staying With Owner

Name: Wonder
Age: 1-2 years
Breed: Black Labrador
Sex: Male (not altered)
Location: Monroe, NC

Vet Info: Wonder is not neutered.  His finder writes that she has given him a vaccine.  He has not yet been heartworm tested.  Wonder weighs about 65 pounds.

Owner Info: Wonder is a very handsome and very sweet fellow who was found running on the highway in not very good condition.  His finders have cleaned him up and treated his wounds, gave him a vaccine, wormed him, and started him on flea and tick preventative.  They are very much hoping to find a place for him to go!  They are unable to keep him because of their other dogs.

They have tried to find his owner, but they write, "I do not feel like the owners will even try to find him with the condition he was in when we found him."

Wonder appears completely blind, and his finders tell us his eyes don't seem to bother him.  They are unsure of the cause of his blindness.  Other than his blindness, they tell us that he's in great health.

Wonder is not yet housebroken or leash trained.  "He is outside in a crate during the night and inside on lead during the day. He doesn't walk around the house because he doesn't want to. I am teaching him to sit and give paw. He is learning to use me as his eyes."

Wonder is a very friendly and sweet fellow, and good with people of all ages!  He's also good with male and female dogs, and lives with several other dogs.  He is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, and has never shown any aggression.  His finders tell us, "We have had him in many situations to test his temperament and he has handled every situation very well with no biting, no fear, no attempt to growl or show discomfort. He has been around goats, small dogs, medium sized dogs and large dogs. He has also been around children ages 8 months to 9 years. He has handled everything perfectly."

His finders also write that he's a real sweetheart!  "He is very loving and happy....He is a good boy. It seems like his life has been rough but his spirits are high. You will fall in love. It's hard not to."
