Bert - In Memory

Name: Bert
Age: Approximately 3 months
Breed: Boxer / Pit Mix
Sex: Male (altered)
Location: Houston, TX (rescue group)

Vet Info: Bert weighs about 10 lbs. He is current on vaccinations. However, he is waiting further evaluation from a veterinarian associated with the rescue group he is staying with.

Owner Info: Bert is a sweet, outgoing, lovable little guy. He was rescued from poor living conditions and is now in the care of a rescue group. Bert was an indoor dog and crated up to this point. He is not yet housebroken or leash trained. The rescue says, “We were able to find a temporary, 4 week foster. He broke our hearts & we want more than anything for him to have the chance to know what it's like to be cared for & loved.” He was evaluated by a veterinarian upon initial rescue and was confirmed to be completely blind; however the veterinarian doesn't feel he has neurological impairment. Bert is still getting used to his current condition and is a little unsteady on his feet as he adjusts to his blindness. The rescue group Bert is with will have him evaluated by another doctor. His current caregiver reports that “Bert is a happy, playful little guy. He eats well & is very sweet. His overall health seems to be good.”

Update: It is with much sadness that we are reporting this update on sweet Bert. Unfortunately, Bert’s health began to decline with no chance of recovery. After consulting with multiple professionals, the difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize Bert. Here is a note from his caregiver:  “Even though Bert was only with us for a short time, he truly brought joy to our lives. All he wanted was to be held and loved. We were able to sit and visit with Bert this morning while letting him enjoy some savory treats. The veterinarians were so kind and let us hold him until the very end.”

She loves to jump up on people and other dogs but she is doing so in play but she is not learning despite any training we can give not to do this. She is good with all people and other dogs but she can hurt smaller kids with the jumping and she also nips (not in aggressive manner just playing) but its best for her to be in a home with no small kids."  Precious is a sweet girl and is not possessive of toys, treats, or food.  She has never bitten or snapped in aggression, and her rescue tells us she's shown no aggression at all.  "She does try to grab your arm when playing, but she is just playing...Everything is a game to her."  They want us to know that she's very sweet and deserves her second chance!  "She is a sweet girl that just deserves a better chance than what we are equipped to give her."

Owner Info: Jake is a gorgeous blind Chow Mix who was rescued from a shelter by a very kind-hearted person the day before he was to be euthanized. She has several dogs of her own and is going through some difficulties personally, but he was so friendly and tugged at her heart, she couldn't let him die in the shelter.  Jake has since tested positive for heartworm and she is doing everything she can, but is desperately hoping for rescue for sweet Jake so he can have a home where he can get "more attention, especially with his special needs."  Jake is an indoor dog with run of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained.  Jake is a very friendly and sweet fellow, and is good with both men and women, male and female dogs, and cats.  He has not been around children.  Jake is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, and has never shown any aggression.  His rescuer writes that he seems to adapt well to new situations, and even when he bumps, he just re-navigates and continues on.  His rescuer gave us more details about Jake's eyesight. Mika - In Memory

Name: Mika (Meeka)
Age: 15 years
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Pekingese
Location: Nashville, TN

Vet Info: Mika is confirmed spayed and had her three-year rabies vaccine on 4/18/14.  She is heartworm negative and her owner uses monthly heartworm and flea preventative.  Mika had both eyes enucleated in February, 2015.  She weighs about 12 pounds.

Owner Info: Mika's owner is heartbroken, but feels Mika would do better in a new home.  Mika is a gorgeous blind senior, and may also be deaf.  Her owner writes, "She is 15 and has been a sweet companion but I have a 3 year old son and after my divorce we moved and mika is not doing well in our current home. I have a longer commute and though I can't find where she is having accidents she is now wetting her bed and sleeping in it. I think if she had someone with more time that could be remedied but leaving her out in a fenced in area isn't for her either as she gets too frightened if left out too long."  Mika is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained, although her owner wrote that her vet thought Mika may be having accidents in her bed because she may be afraid to get out of bed. Mika is a sweet and gentle little girl and good with people of all ages.  She is not possessive of toys, treats, or food.  Mika's owner checked that she is good with female dogs and was raised with other dogs and cats, but doesn't live with any currently.  Mika has only been around one male dog, and her owner writes that they got on very well!  Mika used to warn her owner's son with a growl before she went blind, but has become very quiet since her eyes were removed.  Her owner writes, "now she rarely even growls even if he puts a hat on her".  She also told us, "She had glaucoma we didn't know though she had very regular vet visits. It was too far gone when discovered. They said she had been blind for a while ..... I don't believe she had been blind as the dog I brought home was not the same dog. She had been playing daily with a large bulldog and was no longer able to play or find her way around." When answering if your dog adapts well to new situations despite his/her visual impairment, Mika's owner told us, "Yes, but she had been able to walk herself with a doggie door and now she can't so that has been an adjustment but with more availability to be walked I think she would do well. She finds her way to her two beds, her food and water but not back to the patio when she walks herself. She doesn't do as well on a leash now because she wants to walk in circles to find her way around."

Mika's owner is heartbroken because she doesn't feel she can provide the best home for Mika any longer and is desperately hoping she can be saved.  "My mika was my first baby. She was and has been babied, well treated and we'll taken care of, she is in excellent health except for her blindness and possible hearing loss. If I was stay at home I could probably take care of her and maybe that would work better but it's just not possible....This is a Hail Mary to see if there is another option for her."

Foxy - In Foster Care

Name: Foxy
Sex: Female (not altered)
Age: 6-9 months
Breed: Terrier
Location: Northeast Arkansas

Vet Info: Foxy is not spayed and is not up to date on vaccines.  Her good samaritan said she is heartworm negative, but this has not been confirmed.  Her vet says that Foxy has a bit of a facial deformity and a head bobble that seems to be congenital.  Foxy weighs about 7 pounds.

Owner Info: Foxy is an adorable little puppy who was abandoned at someone's house in rural Arkansas.  They were going to bring her to the local shelter, but surrendered her to a good samaritan.  The good samaritan paid for her to see a vet, but is unable to keep her as she has several other dogs including fosters, and "has no one with the expertise to keep her and make sure she has a full loving life".  Foxy is visually impaired (she cannot see out of one eye and has limited vision in the other) and likely completely deaf.  Foxy will be boarding at a vet clinic beginning 6/3/15, and it is not clear how long she will be able to board.  Foxy is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house.  She is not housebroken or leash trained.  Foxy is good with both men and women and male and female dogs, but children may be too rough for her.  Foxy is not possessive of toys, treats, or food and has never bitten or snapped.  Foxy's good samaritan tells us that in addition to her head bobble, Foxy barks a lot and sometimes goes in circles.  Her vet does not believe she'll get any worse, and commented on what a sweet girl she is!  Foxy loves people and enjoys being held and cuddled.  Foxy's good samaritan is desperately hoping for rescue for sweet Foxy.  She writes, "Please help find Foxy a great place where she can learn all that she needs to be a wonderful dog!"

Mandy - In Memory

Name: Mandy
Age: 8+ years
Breed: Shih Tzu
Sex: Female (altered per rescuer, not yet confirmed)
Location: Philadelphia area

Vet Info: Mandy is spayed, up to date on vaccines, and heartworm negative per her rescuer.  She weighs about 11 pounds.  Mandy's rescuer also tells us Mandy has just had a dental and seems to be in good health.  Mandy is blind due to cataracts.

Owner Info: Mandy is a beautiful little girl looking for rescue or an adoptive home of her very own.  She is currently with an independent rescuer/adoption center. Mandy was saved from a hoarder who had several small-breed dogs who received no veterinary care. She and her sister went into a temporary foster home where they were groomed, learned to walk on leashes, and introduced to the outdoors.  They are now hoping for our help to place sweet little Mandy!  Mandy is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house.  She is leash trained but not housebroken.  "She needs an owner that is patient with her potty habits she was potty pad trained so it takes her a while to know where she is supposed to go. She will go potty outside but not consistently." Her rescuer also writes, "Mandy is blind but gets around great! She has learned to navigate steps and seems like a sweet mellow dog".   Mandy is good with people of all ages, male and female dogs, and cats!  She is a gentle little girl, and is not possessive of toys, treats, or food.  She has never bitten or snapped.

Mandy's rescuer gave us more details about Mandy from her previous foster home:
Mandy will wander around everywhere. Being blind doesn’t really slow her down. That’s good and bad. Sure wouldn’t want her around a pool – she would definitely fall in it or a high wall or something as she will walk off of it…. She goes up and down steps just fine.
•Will come to your voice or clapping of your hand.
•Has no problem finding the food and water – in any room.
•Totally fine with dogs and cats.
•Never seen any aggression about anything – has never snipped and never acted like she would even snip.
•Was fine being groomed and during bath.
•Just talk to her to let her know you are there .. so as not to startle her (as with any blind dog).
•She’s totally fine being picked up.
•Not sure I’ve ever heard her bark ….
•When she starts going “in circles” then, watch out, she’s going to go potty!
•She loves a soft dog bed!
•Outside, she will go off the deck into the grass and end up back at the door waiting to come in…! All on her own…!

Mandy loves to be cuddled.  Her rescuer tells us Mandy is very laid back!   "She is a very sweet girl who had a really awful life. Hopefully her remaining retirement years can be better."
