Elvis - In Foster Care

Name: Elvis
Age: Estimated 4 years
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: Mixed Breed
Location: Raleigh, NC area

Vet Info: Elvis is not neutered, but is up to date on vaccines. His next rabies vaccine is due in August 2016 and his Lepto and Bordetella vaccines are due this February.  His heartworm test from February 2013 was negative. He also had a dental not too long ago. He weighs 35 pounds.

Owner Info: Elvis is a very sweet boy whose owners recently moved.  Previously, they had a fenced yard, but now only have an outdoor kennel and this is where Elvis is kept because her husband won't allow him in the house.  They also had Elvis's sister, but she was able to find a new home for his sister.  Even though she's tried multiple times, she has not been able to find a new home for Elvis, because he is blind.  They have had Elvis since he was a puppy.  She loves Elvis dearly and is desperately hoping for a better life for him.  She writes, "He is a wonderful dog and deserves a good loving home." They are not sure of the cause of his blindness, but she writes that "he can see or sense moving objects when they are close. If the item is not moving he has occasionally ran into them".  Elvis is housebroken and leash trained, and knows the commands sit, stay, and no.  He's good with people of all ages, and with other dogs.  They have never seen him with a cat and so don't know how he would react.  He is also crate trained.  He is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, and has never bitten or snapped.  His owner writes, "he is a loving dog and loves to cuddle. He does well with others but sometimes shys away from a male voice at first. He is in good health with the exception of his eye sight. He is playful and gentle. Last year prior to learning of his vision issues he was hit by a vehicle and broke his front leg. It has since healed while he was under the care of a vet." And she adds, "Thank you for considering him, he is such a wonderful dog!"

Rusty - Adopted

Name: Rusty
Age: 12 years
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Mixed Breed
Location: Philadelphia, PA

Vet Info:
Rusty has just been to the vet and is now up to date with vaccinations. She is confirmed spayed. Rusty weighs approximately 25 lbs.

Owner Info: Rusty’s owner passed away recently and is currently living in a very temporary foster home with her blind companion, Holly.  The late owner’s niece is trying to find a permanent home for both dogs but feels they can be separated if necessary. She told us Rusty was rescued from the PA SPCA and is a sweet senior dog with hip dysplasia. She has a tough time with any more than a few steps. She would be best suited with someone who has a home where she does not have a whole flight of stairs to go out. Rusty is an indoor dog with the run of the house.  She is housebroken and leash trained.  Rusty is listed as being good with all people, children and female dogs.  Rusty is currently in a very temporary foster home.  She needs to find a more permanent situation soon.

Update 2/9/14: We have an urgent update on this sweet pair, please continue to share them with your contacts! Their caregivers also say that if there is interest in them but they need to be held longer, they will of course do so. They want this special pair to have a loving home just as we do.

Here’s some more info on Holly and Rusty from their caregiver:
“Holly is a 10yr old Jack Russell who is recently blind but adjusting well. She is trained, can walk on a leash, is spayed and up to date on shots. She is good with other dogs and people, but she has never had the opportunity to mix with cats or kids. Her sister Rusty is a 13yr small mix breed, who has cataracts but sees well enough. Like Holly she is trained, loves to walk on leash,is also spayed and has a pleasant sweet disposition. She also is good with other dogs and people, but never had opportunity to be with cats or kids. I came by these 2 when my aunt passed away, and currently have a neighbor coming in 3 times a day to feed & let them out, but this is no life for them after having been with my aunt all day all their lives.”

“I am afraid that a shelter would be traumatic for them, and my feeling is shared by several organizations we've contacted who could not foster them. They have never been out of their home or yard, nor put into a situation where they had to fend for themselves , and now that they both have vision problems it would be cruel to subject them to a shelter. They are older and need tender loving homes. Even though it will break our hearts, living with only a neighbor coming 3 times a day and us being with them 2 times a week is not the good life they and certainly not the one they deserve. Therefore If we cannot find a foster or adoption for them by the 1st week of March I will have to have them put to sleep.”

Update 2/18/14: We've received an update from Rusty's and Holly's caregiver that Holly may have found her new home!  She's there for a trial period and we're hoping that everything works out for her!  We will update when we have more information. Rusty is still in need of a new home, and her caregiver notes that she is not used to car travel and would not be able to handle a long journey, so it would be best, if possible, for her to stay somewhat local.

Update 2/27/14: Unfortunately, Holly's adoption didn't work out through no fault of her own, and so she is now back with Rusty.  The local media will be doing a story about them very soon, and we're hopeful that something will work out for this very special pair! Nothing is finalized, and so while there is interest, as of now, they are still in need.

Holly - Adopted

Name: Holly
Age: 10 years
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Jack Russell Terrier
Location: Philadelphia, PA

Vet Info: Holly was taken to the vet in June 2013 as she was not eating.  She was diagnosed as blind.  Vet says Holly is spayed but does not have any previous vet information.  Holly did not have any injections at this vet so can be considered as not up to date. Holly weighs approximately 14 lbs.

Owner Info: Holly’s owner passed away in December 2013 and the owner’s niece is trying to find a permanent home for Holly and her sighted companion dog, Rusty.  Holly is an indoor dog with the run of the house.  She is housebroken but not leash trained.  Holly is listed as being good with all people, children and female dogs. Holly is currently in a very temporary foster home.  She needs to find a more permanent situation soon. The late owner’s niece stated in the surrender form that “Holly was not eating back in June of this year.  That is when she was taken to Bree's Animal Hosp and diagnosed with blindness.  She is much better and eats and has adapted to her condition. Aside from her blindness she is a healthy sweet dog with no issues.  Since she belonged to my late aunt I do not know her full medical background.  Holly just lost her owner and I'm afraid that her companion dog will be separated from her as well.  I really hope that someone can give her a chance to be in a loving home for the remainder of her life.”

Update 2/9/14: We have an urgent update on this sweet pair, please continue to share them with your contacts! Their caregivers also say that if there is interest in them but they need to be held longer, they will of course do so. They want this special pair to have a loving home just as we do.

Cosette (formerly Newbie) - Adopted

Name: Cosette (formerly Newbie)
Age: 5 years (estimated)
Breed: Cocker Spaniel
Sex: Female (altered)
Location: Jacksonville, FL

Vet InfoCosette has been spayed and is up to date on her rabies vaccine.  She has been diagnosed with extremely dry eye and bilateral cherry eye. She weighs about 23 pounds.

Owner Info: Newbie is an adorable little girl who was found in a park on 12/8 in Jacksonville, Florida.  A Good Samaritan saw her struggling in the sand, panting and not able to stand. She is unable to keep Newbie and is hoping for rescue or adoption for this sweetheart.  She has had Newbie for about a week.  She took Newbie right to the vet where it was determined Newbie was blind.  She was also covered with mats and burrs and totally flea ridden.  They shaved about 11 pounds of mats and hair off of her!  Newbie is an indoor dog with run of the house, she is housebroken and walks wonderfully on the leash.  She's good with women (she has not yet been around men), children and female dogs (she's not been around any male dogs), and lives with a female Catahoula.  She is not possessive of treats or toys, but does not like when the Catahoula tries to eat her food.  The Good Samaritan says that Newbie sleeps beautifully through the night, doesn't chew on anything she's not supposed to, and loves to go for car rides!  She loves to sleep curled up in a chair and doesn't wake up until she is woken up.  She's very sweet and gentle and loving and is not at all demanding.  The Good Samaritan writes, "She is very loving and great around small children.  She needs to be with someone stable so she can find the way around the surroundings and be comfortable.  She loves tummy rubs and gentle dog that needs love."

Popeye - In Memory

Name: Popeye
Age: 3-4 years
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier
Location: Central North Carolina area

Vet Info: Popeye had a rabies shot on 11/3/13 but has not had any others yet. He has been neutered. He is heartworm positive and being treated using the slow kill method. One eye has been removed and the other has little sight, if any. He has gained weight - from 43 pounds to 54.2 pounds. The vet clinic said that Popeye "is really sweet and has the best demeanor."

Owner info: The owner wrote: We found Popeye in the middle of the road with one eye popping out of his head, starving, covered in fleas. He was a horrible sight, so we took him to the emergency vet. The vet informed us that he was most likely used as a bait dog in dog fighting. His eye was removed and the damage to his remaining eye has left him completely blind. He has put on some weight and is healthy now, so we feel it is now time to find him a permanent home." The owner found the dog in late October/early November 2013. Popeye is an indoor dog who is housetrained and leash trained. He follows the commands to "come" and "step." He is good with people of all ages, good with cats, and good with female dogs. He does not get along well with larger, male dogs who have not been neutered - he will growl and bark. Popeye has never bitten or snapped. Once Popeye gains some more weight, he will proceed further with the HW treatment plus get the distemper vaccine and be neutered. Popeye has a FB page: https://www.facebook.com/#!/PopeyeNeedsLove The FB page says that the owners are in the final months of their current lease, so need to rehome Popeye soon!

Update 6/15/14: We just got an update on sweet Popeye, who still is in need of a forever home. Here is the update: Popeye is still doing great! Due to the neurological damage this poor boy has suffered along with his heartworms, neutering this boy has been a challenge. Luckily, we don't have any un-spayed females here, but we are hoping that with his neutering he might calm down a bit. Even with everything this boy has endured, he is still such a sweetheart that just loves to be cuddled.

Update 7/23/14: Popeye has been neutered and is ready to be crossposted far and wide!

Update 11/19/14: Popeye does well with the other dogs and cats in his home but his owner said he would really benefit from more one on one attention than she can give him.  Please continue to share his information!!

Update 2/10/15: We've heard from Popeye's caregivers and he's still looking for his forever home!  Popeye has had some setbacks with Obsessive Compulsive activities like circling for a long time and can be destructive if left alone, but his caregivers wrote that he's still a sweet boy!

He really deserves a sweet loving home! I have been trying for months on my own but need help because a lot of people get bad vibes about the Chow breed. I however, have never met such a sweet and gentle dog!!!”
