She also shows signs of anxiety and depression such as excessive salivating, whimpering, and pacing in the crate. Easy’s caregiver says this is due to the stress of having strange people and dogs in the home all the time. Easy has been started on anti-anxiety meds. Hooper - Outcome Unknown

Name: Hooper
Age: 9 years (estimated)
Breed:    Labrador Retriever
Sex: Male (altered)
Location: Atlanta, GA

Vet Info: Hooper is confirmed neutered and up to date on vaccines.  He is heartworm negative and on heartworm preventative.  Hooper weighs about 90 pounds.

Owner Info: Hooper is a very handsome fellow who was rescued from a rural county shelter in July.  His rescuer has Labs and experience with blind dogs, and couldn't leave him at the shelter.  She would keep him, but her Chocolate Lab is afraid of Hooper, and Hooper is now reactive towards him.  Her Lab hides in the bedroom all the time.  She is very much hoping we'll have a place for Hooper.

Hooper is an indoor dog with run of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained.  Hooper is a smart fellow, and his owner tells us, "He has been completely housebroken since the moment he arrived. I have a dog door that has stairs down to the patio and he figured it out and uses it."  Hooper also knows the commands, Sit and Lie Down.

Hooper is described as outgoing, and is good with people of all ages, male and female dogs, and cats.  "He is interested in the cats, and gets a little mouthy but they just move and he can't find them. He doesn't actively hunt them."

Hooper is not possessive with toys, treats or food, and the only aggression he's ever shown is to her Chocolate Lab.  She writes that her Lab "didn't really take to him and would growl and Hooper got reactive. But that's the only situation. I just took in my father and his Chihuahua and Hooper was very interested but wasn't aggressive or anything.   I took Hooper to our local farmer's market and kids came over to pet him and he met some friendly dogs and he was just great."  Hooper has never bitten or snapped.

Hooper's owner tells us he adapts well to new situations.  "He's careful but not super timid. Once he's got the environment he moves confidently."

Hooper is completely blind, and her vet said it was most likely detached retinas.  He is in no pain.  Other than a few little lipomas, as expected for a Lab his age, Hooper is in good health.  His owner writes,  "His hips seem fine. He teeth were in very good shape and he was neutered. This dog was obviously loved, well socialized, and raised indoors."

She wants us to know what a very special fellow Hooper is!  "He is just awesome. Sweet, loves attention, rides well in the car, loves to swim - all the usual Labby stuff."

Muttsey - Adopted

Name: Muttsey
Age: 14 years
Breed: Poodle
Sex: Female (altered)
Location: Charlotte, NC

Vet Info: Muttsey is confirmed spayed and up to date on vaccines.  She is next due for the rabies vaccine in July, 2018.  She is heartworm negative.  Muttsey weighs about 9 pounds.  Her owner tells us that her health is excellent.

Owner Info: Muttsey is an adorable little girl whose owner has a new home and new wife, and is no longer able to care for her.  Muttsey belonged to his first wife who died seven years ago.  Muttsey has cataracts in both eyes and "loss of hearing".   Her owner writes that he believes she has no vision in one eye and limited vision in the other.  "Sees better far away than up close."  He also tells us that she is a picky eater, and sleeps in her kennel.

Her owner had found a new home for her, but she was returned because her new owner "did not know how to "adapt" to a needy pet."  He has also tried asking his dog sitters and poodle rescues, with no luck.

Muttsey is an indoor dog who is crated and is housebroken.  She can walk on a leash, but is not trained to follow commands.  Muttsey is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, and has not shown any aggression.  She is good with both men and women.   She doesn't live with any other pets, so we asked her owner if he knew how she was with other dogs.  He wrote, "Muttsey has stayed with 2 local dog sitters over the years.  One sits 2 or 3 dogs (small) at the same time so Ms. M has learned to socialize with other dogs in that setting.  The other sitter has 2 yorkies who Ms. M trained (when they were pups) to be good or bad depending on your viewpoint!!!!  The owner’s children have dogs (large) so she has been around them as well.  After the usual “hello” she ignores them and let’s them know she is the queen and leave her alone.  They usually do.  There have never been any “fights”.   When I walk her, she will say hi to another walking dog if the dog doesn’t bark at her.  But basically is content to be with me.  She has been around cats and typically ignores them unless cat approaches and wants to “smell” – then she might smell back."

Muttsey's owner also shared a story written from her perspective that we've posted below, with names removed:

My original parents died of old age when I was but 2 years young.  I am only 14 now.  B (wife) and B (husband) adopted me all the way from Canada. I was very lucky and happy even though my favorite was B (wife) - you could say I was her dog and B (husband) put up with me.   I have to admit I was spoiled and had the run of the house even though I was kennel trained.  I had fenced in backyard but didn’t like to use the doggy door so they had to let me in and out when I needed to use the back yard.   Once night I even got to chase a deer through my neighborhood – that was fun but he jumped a creek and I wouldn’t get me feet wet so I stopped. Then B (wife) died suddenly when I was 8 and I was left alone with B (husband).  But he stepped up to the plate and has taken very good care of me even though I do cause him to find a baby sitter when he travels - I do not like to be left in a kennel because I am spoiled.  So he found three homes who would keep me when he was on the road.  I could say I have four homes but B is the best and the other three cannot keep me on a full time basis.  Thanks to the dog sitters, I have learned to be around other dogs and occasional cat.  B takes me to the vet two times every year.  I do not like it but he has made sure I am a healthy dog.  Regardless I have developed cataracts in both eyes and have lost most of my hearing.  But I still have lots of energy and love to go on walks and can run and twirl with happiness when B returns home even after just a few hours at work.  I am a picky eater and know I can be a bother when I demand attention and want to be petted but that is why I exist!    Sometime B takes me on long trips and I ride patiently and get to walk at rest halts where there are PLENTY of new smells for me to explore and then off we go again.  Weather permitting B even takes me on short trips when he goes to the store.   But alas B has new work and a new life in a new house which I do not like and he knows it.  So he is looking for a new home for me where I can be a good companion to my new parent(s).   I have not been around kids - I just "kind-of" tolerate them even though they love me to death.  I have never snapped at anyone and love B showing me off to people.   I enjoy traipsing through the airport when we have to pick up visitors.  Even though I can be demanding I am a good and loving and appreciative companion.  I will miss B but please adopt me.

Simon - Outcome Unknown

Name: Simon
Age: Unknown
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: Cocker Spaniel/Poodle Mix
Location: Dallas, TX

Vet Info: Simon is not neutered and has not been vetted.  His good samaritan writes, "He is considerably old; teeth are ok but desperately need to be cleaned. He has a skin irritation on his left cheek that has healed; waiting for the scab to fall off. Has skin tags but nothing that seems to impair mobility or need immediate removal. Excellent temperament. He does not bark but does whine when he needs to use the restroom. Urinates frequently (every 2 hours) and noticeable volume. For the most part, he is house broken. Very confident when he walks even though sight is impaired...I believe the dog is completely blind in both eyes. His right is slightly larger than his left eye and seems to have a film over it. Both eyes are white but the right eye seems to be more noticeable."

Owner Info: Simon is about 30 lbs and is a stray that the good samaritan brought in. They cannot keep him due to pet restrictions at the apartment complex and also because the other dog in the house does not get along with Simon. He appears to be both blind and deaf. He has a good disposition and according to the good samaritan, he adjusts well. He responds to touch for redirection. "He initially stayed in the garage because he had been treated for fleas. He learned the layout of the garage quickly. Once the fleas died, he was moved into the house in a 10X10 room. He navigates the room very well and has learned the route to get from his room to the patio door to go outside for pottie breaks."

Simon's good samaritan wants us to know what a special and loving boy he is!  He does well with people of all ages and will make someone a wonderful cuddle partner!   She writes, "Incredibly smart dog. Very lovable and friendly. Thinks he is a big baby because he will crawl in your lap to be held".

Sinatra - Adopted

Name: Sinatra
Age: Estimated 2+ years

His right eye is unobstructed, but does have signs of cataracts. His left eye is partially obstructed by the inner eye lid. Because his eyes are so small, he cannot push them out far enough to have the inner eye lid fall.” He is also partially deaf. Sinatra weighs 30 pounds.

Owner Info: Sinatra is at his fourth home in his young life. His current owners rescued him after he was abandoned by his previous owner at a doggie day care about a year ago. Sinatra is an indoor dog with run of the house. He is housebroken and leash-trained. He knows commands, sit, come, and stay. Sinatra is described as nervous and good with men, women, teenagers and kids, as well as cats. Sinatra lives in a house with two other dogs. He has never shown aggression toward anyone but his owner says, “it takes him a while to warm up o others, based on his lack of sight and hearing.” In response to our question about adapting to new environments and situations, Sinatra’s owner said, “We feel he does, it just takes him a few hours to gain awareness of his surroundings. He loves to cuddle under a blanket so if you have one of those, he will be happy as a clam.”

Sinatra’s owners also say he is an absolute sweetheart! “He loves to cuddle, play tug, and throw socks in the air. He lives to be under the blankets, it's his favorite thing. Cayenne - In Foster Care

Name: Cayenne
Age: 3 years
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Golden Retriever
Location: Quebec, Canada

Vet InfoCayenne is confirmed spayed and is next due for the rabies vaccine in September, 2016. Cayenne's owner reports that she had a negative snap test on 11/6. Cayenne weighs about 55 pounds.

Owner Info: DOB 7/15/2012. Cayenne is a gorgeous dark red Golden Retriever.  Her breeder did her CERF before breeding Cayenne, and she is affected with PRA.  Further DNA testing was not able to determine the cause of Cayenne's PRA.  Cayenne was not bred.

Her breeder writes that so far, Cayenne has only lost her night vision, and she is hoping to find placement for Cayenne as soon as she can, before her vision gets worse.

Cayenne's breeder is heartbroken, and she writes, "I worked with her in agility for a year, as I didn't know her eyes problems and we were in intermediate/advanced classes. She is from a very active bloodline. I am trying to find her an active person who would maybe like to train her with odors as she will lose sight long term. No young kids, as she has lived with teenagers and adults only.....The reason why I want to place her is because she has less tolerance with my other dogs (2 other), probably because she sees less. She has always been good with other dogs before. I want the best for her and as she still sees, I think she would adapt more easily."

Her owner gave us more details about Cayenne's vision:  "She has only lost her night vision. She sees like if she would look through a swiss cheese slice, and the ophtalmologist told me that she sees like this since she is young, so he says it doesn't bother her."  Other than her eyes, her owner writes that Cayenne is a healthy girl.

Cayenne is an indoor dog with run of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained.  She is a very smart girl and knows many commands including Sit, Down, Come, Look, and all of the agility commands.  Cayenne is described as outgoing, and good with men, women, teenagers, male and female dogs, and cats, although her owner notes that she has had some issues with her sister.  She gave us more details:  "She has bitten her sister. That happened lately, I think it has something to do with the incomfort of her sight. She has a good tolerance with other dogs,(in agility her best friend was a corgi.) other than her sister and with puppies too."  Cayenne is not possessive of toys, treats, or food.

Cayenne's owner tells us Cayenne adapts well to new situations, and is very people oriented.  She'll be a wonderful companion for someone!  Her owner writes, "Cayenne is young and healthy. As all the dark red golden's she can be a fantastic companion for someone who has time to give to her. The opthalmologist told me she could still continue agility. A retired or half retired person that takes long walks, and that needs lots of love as she is very very much people oriented."

Lily - In BDRA Foster Care

Name: Lily
Age: Five years
Breed: Double Dapple Dachshund
Sex: Female

Location: Charlotte, NC

Monday, October 26, 2015

Sosa - Outcome Unknown

Name: Sosa
Age: 1-2 years old
Breed: Mixed Breed
Sex: Female (altered per rescuer, not yet confirmed)
Location: Nashville, TN area

Vet Info: Sosa is spayed, up to date on vaccines, and heartworm negative per her rescuer, but this has not yet been confirmed.  Sosa weighs about 40 pounds.

Owner Info: Sosa is a beautiful and fun little girl who was saved from an owner who could not care for her properly, and where she had to stay in a crate the vast majority of the time.  Sosa's rescuer had always intended on finding Sosa a new home or rescue, and is very much hoping we'll have placement for her.  She has had Sosa for about two weeks.

Sosa is an indoor dog who is crated.  She is housebroken, but not leash trained.  Sosa is a sweet and friendly girl, and is good with people of all ages, male and female dogs, and cats.  She currently lives with three dogs and one cat.

Sosa is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, but does play bite when playing.  Her rescuer writes, "I have never seen nor heard about Sosa biting or snapping at anyone as an act of aggression, but she play bites when she gets hyper. She is usually very gentle when she does it. The only time it has ever been an issue is when she gets too worked up and won't stop play biting without being pulled away and told "No!" very firmly. I think a little training and a little growing up time will easily fix this issue."

Sosa adjust well to new situations and her rescuer gave us more details:  "Yes, she seems to adapt very quickly. She has moved from home to home a few times, so she is accustomed to being in new environments. It only took her a few hours to start acting comfortable in my home once I brought her here, and within a day or so she had pretty much learned the layout of the house and how to interact with my other dogs."

Sosa is not completely blind, but does see better in well lit areas. Her rescuer also told us more about Sosa's health.  "I do not think Sosa is not completely blind as she definitely does better in well lit areas, however, I do believe that her vision is minimal at best because, even with plenty of light, she still runs into things sometimes. I do not know for certain what caused her visual impairment, but the person with whom she was living previously told me that she thought it may be due to Sosa being hit by a car at some point in her life. Again though, I do not know this for certain....Sosa is very thin, but eats very well and has never (at least not any time recently) been in a situation where she was not being fed. She makes odd sounds when she eats or pants which makes me think she may have some kind of windpipe damage or issue from the past. Luckily, it does not seem to affect her ability to eat, drink, or breathe, or have any impact on her quality of life."

Sosa's rescuer wants us to know she's a very sweet little girl who deserves a loving family and home of her own!  "Sosa is a very sweet girl with lots of love to give. She would make a great family pet, and is not at all difficult to take care of even though she has a visual impairment. This pup has been through a lot in her short life so far, so I am very eager to find the perfect forever home where she can get all the affection and play time she needs and deserves."

Update 5/14/16: Sosa escaped from her yard and they have not been able to find her.
