Delilah - In BDRA Foster Care

Name: Delilah
Age: 2 1/2 years
Breed: Labrador/Pit Mix
Sex: Female (not altered)
Location: Houston, TX area

Vet Info: Delilah is not spayed, is not up to date on vaccines and has not been heartworm tested. She weighs about 55 - 60 pounds.

Owner Info: From Delilah's owner: "I lost my jobs months back and have had no luck finding new employment yet and now I am being evicted from my home and have to move out this Saturday. I am unable to take either of my pups with me where i will be staying for now and i have already found a temporary home for my puppy. and my family is uanble to temporarily home them either. My sister is at the limit with her landlord and my mother cannot have another dog where she is renting. We have reached out on Facebook as well as my sister's coworkers, etc. and we are now in urgent need of placing Delilah, as she is blind and we know if she is forced to take her to a shelter she will be euthanized due to her disability.

Details and pics:
Delilah is a 2 ½ year old female lab/pit mix, born April 2012, weighs roughly 55/60 lbs. She was born with sunk in blind eyes. She has been raised with my eleven year old and two year old daughters. She is crate trained and well behaved. (No known bad habits, as chewing on stuff etc. as she is never left unattended when loose inside and has never had any potty accidents. When they are not home she is crated. She is extremely loving and is awesome with the kids.) She has never shown any aggressive behavior even with my daughter’s friends being over for the first time and not knowing who they are. She warms up instantly to new people. She has never had any health issues, but is not current on her shots. We are in search of a happy home that can give her the care and love that she needs with her disability and to keep her from being euthanized. I would love to be able to take Delilah back once I am able to get on my feet and back in my own home if someone is at least willing to take her only temporarily, or as sad as it is for me I am also willing to give her up permanently if that is what needs to happen under the circumsstances I am grasping for options to keep us from having to take her to a shellter and her automatically be euthanized due to her disability with her blindness. "Delilah is an indoor dog who is crated, she is housebroken but not leash trained. She is good with people of all ages and both male and female dogs. She is not possessive of toys, treats or food and has never shown any aggression. Her owner writes, "she is very loving and does well with all new people of all ages that come into our home."

Rocky - In Memory

Name: Rocky
Age: 8 years
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: Chihuahua
Location: Connecticut

Vet Info: Rocky has no vet, and the owner does not have the financial means to take Rocky to a vet.

Owner Info: Rocky was in the streets and then found by his current owner about five months ago. They really love Rocky but they cannot afford any vet bills so want him to have a new home. Rocky is about 8 years old and weighs about 15 pounds. He is not housetrained or leashtrained. He is not current with vaccinations and has not been neutered. They wrote on 10/27/14: "Rocky has been good with the people that have been around him, stranger or well known. He hasn't been around any male dogs or cats in the 5 months we've had him (so they know he is good around female dogs, because they have one, but no sure about male dogs and cats). He's been around children, teens & adults and what he does is ignore everyone cause he can't hear them. He's calm, not friendly, but not snappy either. When we first rescued him, we noticed that he couldn't hear, he was blind (although he does jump when he sees movement, so perhaps does see some) and that his hips weren't functioning correctly. He can't walk up or down the stairs, and he always falls to his left side, like he has no control over how he sits. His backside has gotten very bad within the last week, he keeps on chewing away, we're very worried. I am buying a cone today so he can resist the chewing/pulling. We checked for fleas before we let him inside our house. To my knowledge he has none. He paces in circles all day. He eats and drinks very well! When it comes to house training, we tried to get him familiar with newspaper, but it hasn't really worked. Plus he's deaf so I don't think we're doing a good job training a dog that can't hear us. It's very hard. Please help!"

Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Akita
Location: Western New York

Vet Info: Denali is confirmed neutered and is current with vaccinations. Denali weighs 80 lbs. He is mostly blind (about 10% vision) from birth.

Owner Info: Denali is a young Akita whose owner 's circumstances have changed and she can no longer give him the time and space she had wanted to. Denali was adopted as a puppy and his owner is having trouble finding a new home for him. The breeder did not want him back when they found out he was blind. He is an outdoor dog with a tie-out but he is also house-broken and leash-trained. He goes to doggie daycare three times a week and they work on basic commands there; he knows stay, sit, lay down and he's working on come! His owner says he is shy and very“people-picky” but once he gets to know them by smell, he is fine. He has never been around small kids. His owner says she is nervous to allow them around him. He is currently living in a house with three shih-tsus who Denali does not get along with. There have been fights with the smaller dogs but no incidents with broken skin. His owner says that Denali is a really good boy who loves to play and have his belly rubbed. He just needs the right person to handle him.

Maddie and Mandy (bonded pair) - Adopted

Names: Maddie and Mandy (sisters)
Ages: 9 years
Breed: Double Merle Australian Shepherds
Sex: Female (altered as per rescue)
Location: Southeastern New Hampshire

Vet Info: Maddie and Mandy are spayed and up to date on vaccines per their rescue. They are heartworm negative. Each weighs about 35 pounds.

Owner Info: Maddie and Mandy are beautiful Double Merle sisters rescued from a high kill shelter in West Virginia. When they were pulled, they were filthy, matted, covered in their own feces, and had to be shaved down. They were temp-fostered until transport to New Hampshire to be long-term fostered, but unfortunately, the long-term foster reported that one of them bit her personal dog. The rescue does not have any other available foster homes, and the girls are currently in boarding. Their rescue is desperately hoping they can get out of boarding and into another foster or adoptive home as soon as possible! They are a bonded pair and have been together for 9 years. Mandy is blind and Maddie is deaf and blind. Maddie and Mandy are indoor dogs who are crated, they are housebroken but not leash trained. They are described as nervous and shy for obvious reasons. They are great with men, women, and children and are very loving and affectionate. Their rescue writes, "The boarding facility manager said they are very adapted to their kennel and play area. It does not take them long at all to be acclimated. The manager is in love and spends time with them every day. She said if she didn't already have two, she would adopt them in a moment!" Maddie and Mandy are nervous around animals they don't know. In boarding and at their short-term foster home, however, they did not have any issues and the short-term foster reported they were great with her other dogs. They are not possessive of toys, treats, or food. Their rescue writes, "All who meet them say they are the sweetest girls!" and they want us to know they're lovable and playful! And very affectionate!

Edward (Patch has been adopted)

Names: Edward
Age: 2 years
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: Great Pyrenee/Labrador Mix
Location: Nebraska

Vet Info: Edward is up to date on shots. The vet has no other information on him.

Owner Info: Edward was looking for a new home with his sister Patch. Patch has found a home but Edward is still waiting. Their current owner has had Edward and his sister, Patch, for the past four months. They belonged to family who could not take the dogs when they moved. Unfortunately, the current owner's male dog does not like having Patch and Edward in the home, so both dogs need a new home. Edward is 63-65 pounds and is not neutered. Patch is the same weight and not spayed. Patch can see. Edward has dilated pupils and can, perhaps, see shapes and shadows. Patch and Edward are outdoor dogs and are not housetrained. They do walk on a leash. Edward and Patch have only been to a vet once, and that was to get shots this summer. When asked how they are with men, other dogs, and cats, the owner wrote: "Edward is leery of men. He's never done anything to anyone, he just steers clear. He won't go to my husband unless I'm with him and then he's fine. Cats are just a toy to Edward and Patch (they have killed a kitten). As for male dogs, I think if Edward and my dog were both neutered, they might get along better. My two are the only dogs they've been around." She knows that Edward is good with female dogs, women, and children of all ages. Patch is good with both male and female dogs, and people (men, women, and children) of all ages. The current owner also wrote: "Edward is a handsome devil with the sweetest disposition. He is always so happy to see me, well, I guess he can't really see me but he knows that I'm there and can't wait for some lovin'. Him not being able to see really doesn't seem to affect him much and I know he would be a great pet for anyone willing to take him in. Patch is a sweet and beautiful girl. She does well with my kids and gets along great with our lab. She loves to play with tennis balls and anything else you might give her."

Update 4/17/15: We've heard from Patch's and Edward's owner and Patch has been adopted!  She has her very own family with a little girl to love her and a big farm to run on!

Edward is still in need of rescue (he is the brown dog in the photos).  His owner writes that he's done very well without his sister and really deserves a new life.  "He has done very well without his sister around. In fact,  I think he may have become an even better dog. He has put on some weight and is looking healthier. We have tried different toys for him but he just doesn't seem to get it. So bones and biscuits for my boy.  I love him to pieces but my dog absolutely loathes him. He still needs his own family and the sooner the better."

Mindy and Mandy - Adopted

Name: Mandy and Mindy (bonded siblings)
Age: Unknown
Sex: Females (altered)
Breed: Peke-a-poo
Location: Eastern TN

Vet Info: Both dogs are described as neutered but have not been vetted, are not current with vaccinations, and have not been heartworm tested. Mindy is 20 pounds and sighted; Mandy is 10 pounds and vision impaired – milky white eyes, but does not appear to be in pain. Both had fleas initially, but have been shaved and bathed several times since.

Owner Info: Mindy and Mandy are a pair of Peke-a-poos who were surrendered by the owner's daughter due to a stroke and move to a nursing home; they've been with their current caregiver since August. There were ten dogs in the home and seven were successfully placed elsewhere. Mandy is blind, but the two are bonded and should stay together. They are indoor dogs that aren't afraid to wander a fenced yard. They are not house-broken or leash-trained, but will use pee pads. They are described as shy, good with women, male and female dogs, cats, and other small animals. Neither is possessive or aggressive, and they have never snapped at any person or animal. Mandy will follow your voice and handles stairs. Mindy is more shy, but both are sweet girls.

Gracie - In Foster Care

Name: Gracie
Age: 8 months
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Australian Shepherd
Location: Arkansas

Vet Info: The vet said that Gracie is a sweet girl who is healthy except for being blind and deaf (congenital condition). She was recently spayed and is up to date on shots. She has not yet been heartworm tested.

Owner Info: Gracie has "episodes" that her current owner has been told could be seizures, and so she needs an MRI. The episodes are triggered when light is turned on in a dark room. Gracie's current owner cannot afford any specialty care, so wants her to have a home where someone can afford her medical care. Gracie is 30 pounds right now and was going to be euthanized by her breeder until her current owner stepped in to adopt her. Gracie is housebroken and gets along with people, dogs and cats. Gracie is a wonderful puppy who is in need of a loving home!

Update 2/25/15: Gracie is still in need of a new home!  Her owner has worked very hard to help Gracie with her issues, but feels she is unable to meet Gracie's needs as she cannot afford specialty care or more vetting, and she is becoming desperate as Gracie has cut herself.  She is hoping to find Gracie "someone who can do for her what I cannot".
She's given us more details about Gracie's issues:

I have been trying to not turn on a light when Gracie first enters a room and definitely don't turn one on in the room where her crate is kept. She also goes into these episodes when she first goes outside if it is daylight. But I have also noticed that if she bumps into things it can trigger the episodes too. I've been trying to be very conscious of the lighting as well as the volume of the television. The light changes from the television can also trigger as well as the sound if its too loud. I'm trying  everything, every tip and suggestion that anyone offers. One of my friends has an anonymous donor who paid for Gracie to have a Muffins Halo. But, it didn't do too much to alleviate the issues, she isn't flinching.  She immediately goes into the spinning and running frantically.  So frantically that she bounces into walls, or furniture or if outside the fence or house. It's really worrisome because I'm so afraid she will hurt herself.

Update 3/31/15: The OS Team has heard from Gracie's owner and Gracie is still in need of a new home or rescue:

"I just got home from another hospital stay and it’s been hard on Gracie. My Dad went to the house several times a day to let the dogs out to potty and play for a while. But it was still just too much for Gracie to be without someone. I have just gotten to the point that it is far more than I can manage trying to care for Gracie at the same time I am trying to gain my strength back. I have just reached the point that I need someone to take my Gracie. She needs some anti anxiety meds at the very least, but also someone who can physically devote time to her and I cannot do that."

Piper - In Foster Care

Name: Piper
Age: 11 years
Breed: Beagle / Terrier
Sex: Female (altered)
Location: Whytheville, VA area

Vet Info: Piper is confirmed spayed and up to date on vaccines. Her next rabies vaccine is due in September, 2017. She has not been recently heartworm tested. Piper weighs about 20 to 25 pounds. She is also current on flea and tick medication and has been wormed.

Owner Info: Piper is an adorable and sweet little girl who was surrendered to a local vet to be euthanized just for being almost completely blind (her eyes are completely glazed over but she may have a bit of vision in one eye). The vet reached out to a local contact who is now trying to find sweet Piper rescue or an adoptive home! Piper is currently in a short term foster home. Other than her blindness, her caregiver writes that she is a healthy little girl. Piper is an indoor dog with run of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained. She is able to rely on voice commands to get around, and her caregiver writes, "She listens and depends on your voice commands to help her get around especially with steps or if there is not another dog present that she can follow and learn the boundaries of the place." Piper is good with people of all ages and both male and female dogs. She's also good with cats! She currently lives with several other dogs, a cat, and three year old twins! Piper is not possessive of toys, treats, or food and has never shown any aggression. When asked if your dog adapts well to new situations, her caregiver writes, "Yes, she has shown no sign of distress since arriving at the vet and now arriving at her fosters home. As long as she is guided a little by human or other animal in the house she does fine with getting around, eating, using the bathroom outside, and using the dog door. As long as she is close behind you or another animal she does fine with steps and if she is with you she does great with verbal ques as far as what to do and where to go. She responds very well to the verbal commands and her name!" They want us to know that Piper is "super super sweet! Has had no accidents or trouble what so ever with her even in new surroundings! She listens super well and just wants a buddy! Needs a place where the blindness wont be an issue because to be blind she does so well with getting around and listening to your voice to understand what is going on. She is a little nervous at first just because of her blindness but she warms up and figures things out quickly! Once she has you to depend on as well as any other animals in the house she is set and good to go!"

Benjy is good with people of all ages and with female dogs. He's never been around male dogs, but he just ignores the female dogs, and they believe he'll be just fine with male dogs, too! He is not possessive of toys, treats, or food and has never bitten or snapped.  Benjy wasn't feeling well a few months ago and couldn't hold anything down. His caregivers write, "He was diagnosed with diabetes and requires 2 insulin shots per day. With the medicine his appetite returned, he was energetic, and happy until the eye conditioned developed". Owner Info: Luke was rescued from a high kill shelter and has been with his owner for about six months. He is blind in his right eye (it is black and much smaller than his left eye) and his owner thinks he may have some brain damage from prior abuse. He is not doing well with the other male dogs in the home and his owner believes a less stressful home where he is the only dog would be best for Luke. She is very much hoping for rescue. Luke is an indoor dog with run of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained. He's good with people of all ages and is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, but he does show aggression towards his owners' other dogs (all male). His owner writes that he attacks the other dogs out of fear, but Luke has NEVER shown aggression towards a human. She wants us to know, "I feel Luke would do best where he is the only dog. I know that is hard to find but I feel he would be much happier and less stressed if he was the only dog."

Update 10/13/14: We've received an update from Luke's owner! He'll be seeing an ophthalmologist next week as their vet is concerned there may be something going on with his eyes. The vet has also suggested starting Luke on medication to see if it helps him with "lashing out at our other dogs." They will keep us updated!

He gets around great and is a happy boy. He was loved at one time because he was neutered and they almost fed him to death. He is crate trained and housebroken when let out on a regular schedule.
