Gracie - Adopted

Name: Gracie
Age: 3-4 years
Breed: Border Collie
Sex: Female (altered)
Location: Cincinnati, OH area

Vet Info: Gracie is confirmed spayed.  She is up to date on vaccines, and next due for rabies, bordetella and distemper on 5/25/14.  She is due for her parvo vaccine on 11/23/13.   Gracie weighs 28 pounds.

Owner Info: A good samaritan witnessed a dog get run over by a van.  The good samaritan stopped to check on her, and while injured, the dog had a pulse, so the good samaritan rushed her to the closest vet. They said she wouldn't make it. Two weeks later they called and gave her a stray dog and a huge bill!  Even though she already had three dogs and three small children, the good samaritan took Gracie (the dog that was hit) into her home.   Gracie is healed now but blind in one eye.  Unfortunately, one of her caregiver's other dogs is very dominant and attacks Gracie.  Gracie usually tries to hide, but "at some point she has to defend herself", and then her caregiver is in the middle.    She is doing her best to keep them separated but it is very difficult and she is not sure how long she can keep it up.  Gracie is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house.  She is housebroken and leash trained.  She gets along well with her caregiver's other dogs and her three small children, but her caregiver says she will need some training on "no jump".   She is also nervous around men, but does fine with women.  When asked if Gracie has shown aggression or broken skin, her caregiver writes, "She only shows aggression when attack by my bulldog.....She did break skin but no vet visit was needed for either dog.... It's so sad she tries to hide and get away while I'm trying to pick up my bulldog to get her to stop. Gracie deserves better. She is not people aggressive, our Ferret got out once and she didn't eat her, and she has never seen other small animals. She does not like other dogs around her while she eats. She prefers a place of her own but also loves attention from her owner."  Her caregiver also says, "She's very healthy, really healthier then my other dogs. Her only issue is that she hates getting her nails trimmed".  And she adds, "I am desperate to find her a forever home where she can get the love and attention she deserves. My heart breaks that I can't keep her but I just can't handle another dog on top of my current 3 and 3 children. Please help."

Owner Info:  Sammy is a very handsome and very happy terrier mix with diabetes and cataracts.  He has one ear up and one ear down!  His owner has recently passed away, and a very good friend of his owner's is trying to find him (and the other dogs and cats), new homes.  Sammy is diabetic and requires two insulin shots daily.  He is housebroken and leash trained and good with both other dogs and cats.  He is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, and has never shown any aggression.  He has never bitten or snapped.   His caregiver writes, "He runs and plays like a puppy!   He is extremely friendly and happy just needs a good home with a little extra attention".  Besides the diabetes and cataracts, she notes that he seems to be in good health.  Sammy is still living in the owner's home, and his caregiver goes there several times a day to check on him.  She says, "Sammy can only stay in his current home until it is sold for estate purposes. July/August", and she adds, "He's extremely lovable/playful and energetic."

Mabel - Staying With Owner

Name: Mabel

Age: 10 ½ years (DOB 8/1/2002)
Breed: Dalmatian
Sex: Female (altered)
Location: Charlotte, NC area

Vet info: Mabel is confirmed spayed and heartworm negative.  Her next rabies vaccine is due 3/10/16.

Info: Mabel's owner is heartbroken, but has made the difficult decision to try to rehome Mabel, and we do consider Mabel to be urgent.  Mabel is a beautiful girl who has had both eyes removed due to glaucoma, with her second eye being removed about 5 months ago.  Mabel's owner has had Mabel since she was 6 or 8 weeks old.  Mabel is an indoor dog with run of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained.  She is good with other dogs and cats, and both adults and children.  She has never bitten or snapped, and when asked if Mabel has ever shown aggression, her owner writes, "No; She has been around dogs via dog parks/group of friends w/ dogs since she was a puppy, and she has been around my children since they first came home as babies. My 3 year old was using her as a pillow last night."    At Mabel's last vet visit in March/April, the vet "noticed a heart murmur -Signs of heart failure. No sign of when could be months-years according to VET. She does require a special diet of UD food. Due to potential UTI. She has not had any in past couple years."   Mabel's owner adds, "Mabel is the sweetest, kindest, and most loving dog that I know/have ever had. She is happy to be sitting there next to you. This is by far going to be one of the hardest things for me.  She is a great dog. Good w/ kids, people, loves to be loved.. etc... However since her "disability" I feel that when she gets nervous or unsure of things (different voices/people coming in and out) She has had few accidents in the house, or has pooped on our concrete patio as a nervous tendency - 90% of the time she does fine. Sleeps thru the night w/out accidents, does not have accidents when we leave (we do put them in our laundry room, when we leave). She does run into things in the house, walls, furniture, stumbles on the toys left by my 3 &2 year old. (but only as a way to feel around things... (obviously she can't carry a cane).... "  And again, she adds what a wonderful dog Mabel is!

Isabella - Adopted

Name: Isabella
Age: 2 years
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Dachshund/Terrier mix
Location: Houston, TX

Vet Info: Isabella weighs 26 pounds.  She is up to date on her rabies. She is spayed.  She is also heartworm negative.

Owner Info: Isabella was surrendered at a shelter by her owner and was scheduled for euthanasia when she was pulled by an independent rescuer.  Then it was discovered that she has cataracts, so the rescuer is hoping to find someone who might want Isabella who will find out if she could be a candidate for cataract surgery.  Isabella is an indoor dog who is not yet housebroken or leash trained.  She is shy but good with people of all ages and also good with dogs. She is currently living with a foster family that has 3 other dogs but, because she cannot see, sometimes she invades the space of the other dogs, and this causes some friction.  Therefore, the rescuer is not sure how long Isabella can stay in this foster home although Isabella has never bitten or snapped as far as anyone knows.  She seems to be in good health with the exception of an ongoing skin issues, probably due to allergies and fleas, and she is receiving treatment.  The rescuer said: "She's a sweet girl who really needs a break."

Update 9/15/13: Isabella had successful cataract surgery and her owner wrote: She's doing well and can see shadows out of the one eye, and clearly out of her eye that was operated on.  Isabella is still in need of a new home!!!

Mya - In Foster Care

Name: Mya
Age: 6 years
Sex: Female (not altered yet due to current medical issues)
Breed: Cockapoo
Location: Cumberland, MD area

Vet Info: Mya is not yet spayed due to current medical issues.  Mya is up to date on her rabies and distemper / parvo vaccines, which are next due 4/24/14.  Per Mya's current rescue, she has advanced cataracts and glaucoma. The cataracts are moving closer to the front of the eye and there is a chance of rupture if her eyes are not removed.  She also has a fatty mass in her abdomen, however their vet has said this is not a concern at this time.  Mya weighs 10 pounds.

Owner Info: Mya is a beautiful and very sweet girl who was saved by her current rescue.  Unfortunately, Mya is going to need surgery on her eyes. Her current rescue has attempted to raise the funds in order to be able to provide her with the care that she needs but was unable to do so. The only option for sweet Mya is to send her to a larger rescue that is more established, so that she can receive the surgery she needs.  Mya is an indoor dog with run of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained.  She also knows basic commands.   Mya is good with people of all ages, and both dogs and cats.  She is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, and has never bitten or snapped.  Her rescue writes, " Mya is a great dog. She has adapted to being blind very well. She gets around the house with ease, and also has found her way around the yard and back to the door."

Daniel - Adopted

Name: Daniel
Age: 4 years (estimated)
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Mixed Breed
Location: Princeton, WV area

Vet Info: Daniel is confirmed neutered and up to date on vaccines.  He is next due for his rabies and dhlpp vaccines on 4/30/14.  Daniel is heartworm negative.  He does have a tick-borne disease called Ehrylichia and will be on medication for a couple of weeks.  Daniel weighs 40 pounds.

Owner Info: Daniel is a very handsome boy who was recently rescued from Nassau, Bahamas, by a smaller-sized rescue.  Daniel was severely dehydrated when he arrived, so he was on IVs for a few days. Daniel has Ehrlichia, which is a tick-borne disease normally found in tropical areas, and he will be on medication for a few more weeks. As a stray, he was also hit by cars in the Bahamas, and this may have caused neurological issues which could be the cause of his loss of vision, but it is not known if this or the Ehrlichia has caused his vision loss.  Daniel is not completely blind, and it is not known if he will ever be completely blind.  One of his eyes has a film, and the other is clear, but has no reaction to a finger close to his eye.  Other than that, they say he is healthy, his blood work is good, and he gets around very well.  Daniel's current rescue is not familiar with dogs who have vision loss, and they are hoping for other rescue placement for Daniel.  They write, "We would love to see a rescue or adopter take Daniel who is familiar with dogs who have impaired vision. We only want the best for you Daniel and we know he needs to go to someone who can handle his issue correctly and who has plenty of time for him".   Daniel is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained.  Daniel gets along with people of all ages, and both other dogs and cats!  Daniel has never bitten or snapped, and is very timid. Since he lived homeless on the streets and food was very scarce, he does growl if a dog gets close to him with a bowl of food. He only does this with dogs, not people, and they are trying to break him of that. He has never hurt another dog.    His current rescue writes, "He is SO sweet, so gentle, he makes me cry every time I am with him. He's breaking my heart.  Daniel has never in his life had a home of his own. He had to search for food and shelter daily. Daniel has been through a lot, and it would be a dream come if Daniel could find a loving family".

Owner Info: Neyo is a 7 - 10 year old completely blind min pin who stands about 16".  He has been with his current caregiver for four months. She was asked to watch him for two weeks while his owner moved, but his owner never came back for him, and his caregiver has been unable to reach his previous owner.  His caregiver is unable to keep him as they have three young children and six animals of their own, and are having difficulties.  They are leaving on 5/23, so Neyo must find a new home by Wednesday, May 22nd, or as much as it upsets and stresses her, he will be taken to the shelter.  His caregiver has reached out to friends, family and other rescues, and has posted several times on CraigsList, but has been unable to find Neyo a new home.  "Neyo is a loving minpin who does not let his blindness get in his way. He can go everywhere and do everything! He can find the correct door to go out of or come into, he knows where the couch, bed and food bowl are, and he knows where the people are. Neyo is a very friendly boy and has not met a stranger! He likes everyone and will welcome everyone. He is great with the kids he is currently living with (from 8 months old to 6 years old) and is good with other dogs and cats! He loves to sleep in bed and do all the normal doggie things. “Neyo is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained.  His caregiver writes, "He is a total doll baby. He was terrified at first. He has transformed into a different dog over the past 4 months. He has learned to trust. He is very lovey. Gets along well with my animals. Gets around great after he learns his surroundings. He has a little crate that he LOVES. He loves to sleep in it. We believe its his safety net."  Neyo can be possessive of treats, but will allow them to be taken out of his mouth.  He has never bitten or snapped.  His caregiver says, "He has never shown any aggression to me. He's not food aggressive but is with treats. But I can talk to him and take the treat out of his mouth. But he does growl."

Stevie - In Foster Care in TX

Name: Stevie
Age: 4 years
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Catahoula
Location: Austin, TX

Vet Info: The vet office staff said Stevie is "pretty amazing and a really cool dog, and her owner has really doted on her." Stevie is spayed, up to date on rabies, distemper, and bordatella, and is HW negative. She was born deaf and blind but can see shadows. She is very healthy and weighs 57 pounds; she could stand to lose a few pounds but is not considered overweight. When given shots, she needs to be muzzled because she will panic but otherwise is "super sweet."

Owner Info: Stevie is an indoor dog who is housetrained and leashtrained. She gets along well with adults and teens/older children, and also gets along with male dogs and cats. She is possessive about her food. Her owner wrote: "I've had Stevie for nearly four years, after finding her on the side of the road near Houston. Over that four years she has been a great companion but I neglected to assert my dominance. I showed her plenty of affection and we took many trips to the dog park but, as a single laid back guy, I allowed her to run loose through the house and through a dog door into the back yard as well as sleep in my bed. Four months ago my girlfriend moved in to the house and we began changing things. I soon learned through a trainer that Stevie needed to be crated most of the day and walked everyday to reduce her anxiety. These changes were implemented and Stevie has adapted very well - she is much more relaxed and happier, other than aggression displayed toward my girlfriend. Other than around her food bowl, she's never shown aggression around anyone until my girlfriend moved in and changes began to occur. She did great with her up until that point. She's always been great with people that come over for extended periods of time. Very friendly. Likes to smell their faces and play. She does great with people and other dogs at the dog park. She has snapped at my girlfriend though several times and now I have been forced to keep them separated. She never broke any skin and these were definitely just warning nips and growls that seem a lot more threatening than they actually are. She's typically very sweet. Unfortunately my girlfriend is unwilling to do any training and I am realizing that with this new living situation for Stevie, I am not willing nor do I have the time to train her on my own and maintain a satisfactory walking schedule and undertake greater responsibility. I love Stevie and we've had four good years and I've given her love and a good home, however things change and it saddens me greatly but I need to find her a new home."

Update 6/24/2013: Stevie had a new forever home all lined up and then the plans just fell apartL Stevie really needs a new home as soon as possible!  Her current owner says he is desperate!

We got him by helping his previous owners when they lost their home and could not keep him. He adapted to us immediately and we fell in love with him. Name: Helen
Age: Approximately 1 year
Breed: Hound mix
Sex: Female (altered)
Location: Sioux Falls, SD area

Vet Info: Helen was spayed on August 14, 2012.  She was given a three-year rabies vaccine on 9/13/12 and the one-year distemper vaccine on the same date.  Helen has not had a recent heartworm test.  She weighs 40 - 45 pounds.

Owner Info: Helen's owners took her in as a rescue dog when she was 5 months old because she was going to be euthanized, even though they had a number of rescue dogs already. Unfortunately, two of their dogs don't like Helen, and they have not been able to rectify that issue. They write, "The 2 that don't like her are smaller and more agressive dogs. She will defend herself if picked on. She also doesn't like cats as she hasn't been able to figure them out yet".   Helen has been blind since birth, but you can't tell by looking at her that she is blind, although she does look at you "cross-eyed".  Other than her blindness, Helen appears to be a healthy girl!  Helen is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained.  Helen is a smart little girl and knows her name, sit, and will shake hands for treats!   She is good with both men and women and her owners note she's also good with other dogs her size.  She has a mild temperament.  Her owners add, "She is a sweetheart. Loves to have her ears rubbed and back scratched. She socialize her in the rest of the house at night and she sits quietly while we watch TV. She goes up and down steps easily by herself and likes to sleep in a laundry basket!  She keeps all her toys in one corner so she can find them. She will be a great dog for the right family.  They will just love her".
