Age: 8 years
Sex: Female (altered)
Location: Harrisburg, PA area

Vet Info:  Elektra is confirmed spayed and heartworm negative.  She is next due for a rabies vaccine in July of 2015, and for distemper vaccine in July of 2013.  She has also had a recent lyme vaccine.  She was at the vet's yesterday (2/18), and was dispensed doxycycline and ear medication.  They also note that she's very recently gone blind.  Elektra weighs 65 pounds.

Owner Info: Her owner wrote: "Elektra is a perfect, healthy dog who the entire family adores. On February 12, 2013 she all of a sudden started running into everything. We took her to the vet that day. They told us she had bilateral retina detachment and is completely blind. We then went to Philadelphia to meet with an opthamologist who just told us the same thing. We have a 6 month old baby who just started crawling and a very active 7 year old child in the home. She is such a nice dog that it was never a concern but since this happened she is scared easily and we cannot risk the baby's or child's safety unfortunately. The vet suggested putting her to sleep but that just isn't an option for us, so we are so hopeful that we will be able to find a good home that can work with her. The kids and entire family are completely devastated."
Elektra is 8 years old and weighs 65 pounds.  She has been with her family for the past four years; she was adopted from a shelter.  She is an indoor dog with the run of the house. She is housetrained and leash trained, and knows the following commands:  sit, paw, other paw, treat, go bye bye, heel, stay, and lay down.  She is an outgoing girl who is good with people of all ages, other dogs, cats, and small animals.  Elektra lives with a cat, a rabbit that roams free inside the house, and a bearded dragon.  Elektra has never shown any aggression in any situation except for once, when the 7 year old in the home startled her and she snapped (did not bite).  This happened just since Elektra suddenly went blind a week ago.  The ophthalmologist said that Elektra has Bilateral Retinal Detachment. The owner wrote:" She is very healthy and is seen at her vet every few months to ensure health. She is an extremely mellow and very friendly dog. She goes outside to use the bathroom without a leash and comes right back. However, she is very good on a leash as well and loves to go for walks. She enjoys just laying on the couch with anybody to be loved on. An overall awesome companion. She is such a loved dog. We rescued her and she has been an amazing addition to our family since. We are all heartbroken that this happened (blindness). We couldn't of asked for a better pet. We are desperate to find help, we will do everything we can to avoid putting her to sleep. We really wish we were able to accommodate her special needs. We just don't feel its fair for her to have to deal with her condition and a chaotic household full of small children."
