Shiloh - In Memory

Name: Shiloh
Age: 5 years
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Heeler / Pit Bull Mix
Location: North Central Arkansas (near Missouri border)

Vet Info: Shiloh is confirmed spayed.  She is next due for her rabies vaccine on 4/18/14, and she received her distemper, parvo, and bordetella vaccines on 8/27/13.  Shiloh has not had a recent heartworm test. She weighs about 50 pounds.

Owner Info: DOB 9/2008. Shiloh is a beautiful girl who was shot in the face and left blind.  She was rescued by her current owner who is unable to keep her due to her other dogs, her work schedule (she works long hours), and finances, and so she is looking for rescue or adoption for sweet Shiloh!   Her owner writes, "All of this is very unfair to her! I really want to see her in a good forever home." Shiloh is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained.  Shiloh is a smart girl and knows many commands, including sit, down, leave it, step, easy, wait, stay, and kennel up.  She adapts well to new situations, and her owner says that she's very intelligent!   Previously, she was a hog hunting dog.  Shiloh is good with men, women, and teenagers.  Shiloh can be possessive with toys, treats, or food and has snapped.  She will defend herself if another dog is aggressive towards her, but she has never bitten people, including any of the children she has been around.  We asked for more detail about how she is with other dogs, and her owner wrote, "I am hesitant to say she gets along with dogs. She gets along with my lab but she honestly doesn't get along with all dogs. It will depend on the dog and if the people are experienced with intelligent dominant breeds.  I will continue to foster her as long as needed. I just really want & need to find her a home."  Her owner also writes, "I just want her to have a good home. She is a sweetheart and just wants to climb in your lap and be loved. I can't keep her, I don't have the time or finances to take on another dog."

Update 11/23/13: Shiloh is still looking for her forever home! Shiloh needs a home where she can be inside with her people.

Update 4/13/14: We heard from Shiloh's owner. She still needs a new home. She wrote: She is doing wonderful!!! She has settled in quite nice. After a slightly rough start with my little dog, they have become friends. I think she could be ok with other dogs IF the people know how to gently correct & if the other dog isn't aggressive. Please help Shiloh find a new home!!

Moe - Adopted

Name: Moe
Age: Estimated 8 - 8 1/2 years
Breed: Shih Tzu
Sex: Male (altered)
Location: Denver, CO area

Vet Info: Moe is confirmed neutered and up to date on vaccines.  He was given one year rabies vaccine on 12/21/12 and had distemper vaccine at shelter on 12/11/12.  He has not had a recent heartworm test.  Moe weighs about 20 pounds.

Owner Info: Moe's owner adopted him from a shelter in December 2012. He was an owner surrender due to previous owner's ill health. Moe had some vision when adopted (he had one eye) but does not now have vision as he had his other eye removed shortly after adoption due to glaucoma.  Unfortunately, his current owner now has health problems herself and she is unable to give Moe the care he needs. Moe is an indoor dog with run of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained.  Moe is good with men, women, and teenagers, but younger children may frighten him.  He is good with both male and female dogs and cats. Moe is not possessive of toys, treats, or food and has never bitten or snapped.   His owner says that Moe adapts well to new situations.

Moe's owner has written a wonderful and emotional write-up on Moe and I've shared that here:

Moe is a sweet little boy who, while at times greatly frustrated, will still respond to me when I tell him to be calm and that it's night time and everyone is asleep. Moe doesn't have much interaction with many animals since losing his sight, though he does get comfort from their presence. I have learned that I can do something to keep his interest and then he won't cry so much, but I must confess I'm not too good at this. If I could physically work with him and train him there is NO WAY I would ever consider letting him go. It is best for him so he can finish his years happy and full of life. Sadly, I have physical ailments that prevent me from tending to his special needs. We live in a two story home and it is extremely difficult for me to carry Moe up and down the stairs. I love this little guy and he deserves someone that can physically be able to handle him. It would be so much easier if we lived in a home better suited for a blind animal. It is therefore my responsibility to find him the person that is capable of seeing to his needs. Moe loves being outside except when it's too hot. Otherwise, it's definitely air conditioning for him. He also prefers rugs or carpet under his little feet. He doesn't like being on furniture at all. Moe seems to have lost interest in all the toys I can find, both ones that make noise or have an attracting odour. He loves to play mostly in the mornings. It's actually getting on the floor and tickling him and slapping the floor while he runs around burying his head and bouncing everywhere. He is definitely a morning puppy the earlier the better to be sure. He also loves to play with his towel after a bath. He loves being chased while I sit and grab him with the towel as he hops and runs past me. Then I run him dry until he gets away. We continue this either until he's dry or we both tire out.

Slippers - Adopted

Name: Slippers
Age: 3 years
Breed: Purebred Collie
Sex: Male (altered)
Location: Philadelphia area

Vet Info: Slippers is confirmed neutered.  He was given rabies and distemper vaccines on 8/22, and also had a heartworm test the same day, which was  negative.  Slippers weighs about 70 pounds.  NOTE:  The rescue writes, "He was just vetted last Thursday 8/22 was groomed that day and neutered on Friday. All of the dogs we picked up were positive for Lyme. The vet has provided meds for that".

Owner Info: Slippers is a very handsome and very sweet purebred collie who is partially deaf and partially blind.  He was just taken from a breeder and placed with a local rescue.  He had been having difficulty in his foster home with no other dogs, and was crying and barking when left alone and so is being moved to a different foster home that has other dogs (he has lived with 10 collies his whole life). Slippers is an indoor dog with run of the house, he is housebroken, but not leash trained.  He is good with people of all ages, and both male and female dogs, and even cats!  He is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, and has never shown any aggression.  They say, "Slippers' eyes are very small. He can see upwards but not downwards".  Slippers is also partially deaf. They write that he is very smart!  "Slippers is very smart and has managed to get over, under or around the barriers that the foster home has put up", and they add that, "He is very sweet!"

Helen - Adopted

Name: Helen
Age: 6 months
Sex: Female (not altered)
Breed: Mini Aussie / Beagle Mix
Location: About an hour north of Dallas, TX

Vet Info: Helen has not been vetted, however her owner has said she is willing to pay for vaccines and HW testing.  Helen weighs 20 pounds.

Owner Info: Helen's owner took her and her two siblings in a month ago. They were not being cared for properly and were just wandering outside. Helen is blind in both eyes, and her owner believes she was born this way.  She says that Helen has no other health issues other than her blindness.  She has since found her two siblings homes but not Helen, even though she's contacted over 20 rescues.  Helen's owner has other dogs, and Helen's owner writes that one of the dogs "does not like her and goes after her continuously".   Helen is an indoor dog with run of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained.  Helen is a smart little girl, and even knows commands like "come", "no", "off", and "kennel".  Her owner says that she gets along with people of all ages, both male and female dogs, and cats, too!  Helen is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, but her owner says she "can have trouble meeting new dogs, she can be untrusting of them since her siblings beat up on her so bad...  but can snap at a new dog. I have her around my five dogs with no issue. But one of my dogs does try to bite her, so its a difficult situation for her." Helen has never bitten or snapped at a person and her owner believes she's young enough that she'll do well in any situation with proper training.  Her owner knows "she deserves a chance at a normal life" and is hoping she'll find rescue so she can have her chance!

Update 11/5/13: Helen's owner has shared some beautiful new pictures (see second photo). Helen is still in need of rescue or adoption.  She's grown into a beautiful girl!

Chico - Staying With Owner

Name: Chico
Age: Estimated 12 years
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Terrier / Chihuahua mix
Location: Fresno, CA area

Vet Info: Chico is confirmed neutered and is next due for his rabies vaccine on 4/9/15.  He is a vaccine reactor and has not been given other vaccines.  Chico has not had a recent heartworm test.  Chico weighs 17 pounds.

Owner Info: Chico is an adorable and very sweet little fellow who was saved from the shelter.  Unfortunately, he is not doing well in his home because his owner is gone a lot.  She believes he gets scared.  His owner says that he manages when she's there because he responds to her finger snaps and voice, but when she's not, he's urinating on the furniture and she assumes "he can't get off the couch".  She says that he loves the couch even more than his bed!  She will be getting him diapers and speaking with a vet, but she very much appreciates any help she can get.  She does not want to take him back to the shelter. Chico is an indoor dog with run of the house, he is usually housebroken and leash trained.  He's a smart fellow and knows several commands, including wait, easy, sit, and shake.  Chico is good with both men and women, and he's fine with other dogs unless they get aggressive with him.  He does chase cats, but will stop if he's told, "no!"  Children might be too rough for him.  Chico is not possessive with toys, treats, or food, and has never shown any aggression unless a dog is aggressive towards him. His owner writes that Chico's eyes have an "opaque clear look" and "his back legs don't work well", and she adds, "He's such a sweet dog.  It breaks my heart to give him up.  Please help."

Update 8/27: The vet thinks he sees some, but I don't know.  I've put my fingers close to his eyes and he doesn't blink or move away.  But what do I know.  He's such a sweetie.  I know he'd love a home where they could interact with him more.  I'm just gone too much.  Before he was extremely active and we played ball daily or play tug of war with a stuffed animal.  Now he just lays there.

Blaze - Adopted

Name: Blaze
Breed: Bichon Frise/Poodle Mix
Age: 8 ½ years
Sex: Male (altered)
Location: Toledo, OH area

Vet Info: Blaze is confirmed neutered.  He is up to date on vaccines and is next due for rabies, bordetella and distemper vaccines in January, 2014.  He is heartworm negative.  Blaze weighs 20 pounds.  He is microchipped.

Owner Info: DOB 3/12/2005. Blaze is an adorable fellow who was saved from being euthanized at the shelter on December 31, 2012, by a smaller-sized rescue.  They have not been able to find him a permanent home.  They are well past retirement age and may be moving, and are hoping for other rescue or adoption for sweet Blaze!  Blaze is an indoor dog with run of the house, he is housebroken but not leash trained.  He is good with people of all ages, and both dogs and cats!  He currently lives with several other dogs.  Blaze has never shown any aggression and has never bitten or snapped.  He is not possessive of toys, treats, or food.  His owners write, "Blaze will retreat if the other dogs play hard or grab the squeaky soft toys he plays with. He loves people but does take safety under chairs or tables".  Blaze adapts well to new situations.  When they stayed at their daughter's for several days, they said, "Blaze adapted quickly to the new surroundings and even followed her when I wasn't there for him to follow.” Blaze does need to have his eye pressure checked every four to eight weeks, and they say that the cataract and opaqueness in his right eye cannot be altered, but his left eye's cataract is less so far.

9/15/13: We heard from Blaze's owner this morning with an update. He is doing just fine and is still in need of a forever home!

Benny - In Foster Care

Name: Benny
Age: 9 years approximately
Sex: Male (altered by report of owner - cannot verify with a vet)
Breed: Chihuahua
Location: Pottstown, PA

Owner Info: The sister of Benny's current owner got Benny as "free to a good home" from Craigslist but then was unable to keep him because her dog did not like Benny. Benny's current owner has had him for about 9 months and is moving into an apartment on August 19th and cannot bring him with her. He has not yet seen a vet but the owner reports he is neutered. She also said he is HW negative and is current on his shots. His eyes are cloudy and she said he cannot see. He is an indoor dog with the run of the house. He is housetrained and leash trained, and follows these commands: sit, stay, and be a baby (when in someone's arms). He is shy initially, but good with adults and teens, and good with dogs. He may chase cats, but he cannot see them well enough, and so they get away. He is not aggressive and has never bitten or snapped. At the end of the day, when he is very tired, he may growl a bit if he is disturbed but that is all he does (no biting or snapping). He only has three teeth left. His owner writes that he "needs to be comforted in new settings since he gets anxious. He has a pillow that came with him, and this calms him down." She also wrote: "He is a really good boy who needs love, support and reassurance."  She also said he loves to be held.
