Shadow - In Memory

Name: Shadow
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: English Setter
Age: 6-7 years
Location: Fishersville, VA

Vet/Medical Info: Shadow is a very sweet girl! She is spayed and UTD on Distemper, Bordatella, and Lepto until July 22 2011. She had her three year rabies on Feb. 27 2011, so will be due by Feb. 27 2014.  She was also tested in February for HW, and is negative, also negative for lyme and ehrlichia.  It's in the notes from February 2011 that she has a mammary tumor, but they have done no treatments.

Owner Info: Shadow's current owner took her in from a hunter who planned on shooting her because of her deteriorating sight. She is a field bred Setter. Her owner has rescued several dogs and always found them homes in the past. Shadow has been an impossible dog to place, she has been at their farm for 1 1/2 years, has been spayed, housebroken, vetted and trained. She is a wonderfully sweet dog, but cannot be a permanent rescue as she kills chickens and chases livestock (she can hear and smell them well!), they cannot trust her outside except on a leash. This seems cruel to her because they have a large farm and fenced farmyard where their other dogs can run and play. They want to find her a home where she can be the main focus and people have more time to devote to her. She has been advertised on Petfinder and crossposted on several other rescue sites. They have also taken her to Petsmart and the local parks to meet people. Four folks have tried her and due to various issues, returned her within the one week trial period I gave them for reasons varying from shedding to a growl. She has one real vice; she growls at other dogs and people when they startle her, especially when on her bed. She is NOT mean in any way. When she growls, she does NOT lunge or bite. She loves people and has never bitten or hurt anyone, even little children. She will growl once, and if you speak to her or pet her, she is fine. I believe this is completely due to her sight. She gets around well, can go up and down stairs very well. She really loves to meet people. Vets suspect she has PRA and say it is common in field bred Setters. She does have a tiny bit of sight or can see shadows in bright sunlight. Four months ago, their Vet found a lump on a mammary gland. It has not grown and is likely benign but this could also be a problem. She is otherwise very healthy. Shadow is a WONDERFUL dog. Like most setters, she is a gentle, calm dog in the house, she sleeps on her bed or on the rug and is happy. Outside, she loves to run and play, although she must be supervised because of her sight. She would do well with a fenced yard and someone who likes to walk or run every day. She loves people. She has a strong prey drive, even though she cannot see. She is not good with birds, small animals, or young livestock. She is okay with cats, although she has never been with a housecat. She is such a sweet dog.
