Maya - In Memory

Name: Maya
Age: 1 1/2 years
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Doberman
Location: Raleigh, NC

Vet Info: Maya has been spayed. The vet has no record of her shots or her HW status (the rescue who currently has Maya reports she is HW positive). The vet suspects trauma caused Maya's vision loss plus her head tilt.

Owner Info: Maya is a 1.5 year old female red Doberman who has spent most of her life in a backyard until she was sent to a shelter, and a rescue pulled her from the shelter three months ago. She is spayed, 55 pounds, up to date on vaccines, and does well in a wire crate. She is a very sweet girl that loves to be near you but has not yet been socialized very well. She can be mouthy, paw at everything, and might spin when she comes out of the crate. When she looks at you, she cocks her head to one side and holds her paw up - she is a very cute and sweet little girl! She is completely blind in her left eye and has only partial vision in her right. Upon eye examination, the vet says her eye structure is normal but believes that the blindness may be due to trauma that affected her optical nerves. It appears she either has selective hearing or hearing loss; she can hear the other dogs bark but doesn’t seem to hear the vacuum cleaner. This may be another reason that she has not responded well to the ‘no’ command. She is fine with all adults but she has not been around children. She also has not been introduced to other dogs directly but has had contact with them when she is in a crate, and she was fine - wiggling and trying to play, and other times she would bark at them. She has also not been around cats. Maya needs someone knowledgeable about blind dogs to help her through to her happy forever after. She is a sweet girl that would make a wonderful family member.
