Baby - Staying With Owner

Name: Baby
Age: 8 to 9 years (maybe older)
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: German Shepherd Mix
Location: Pensacola, FL

Vet Info: Baby saw the vet on March 1, 2013. The vet office said that Baby seems to be in good health. Because she was a stray, there is no record of any shots and she was not given any by the vet. She is not spayed. She is blind but the cause is unknown. She weighs 136 pounds and is about 8-9 years old. She has been treated for tapeworm. The vet office said that Baby is a "very pretty girl." Baby went back to the vet in November and the vet has verified Baby's spay and Baby is now up-to-date on all shots (rabies, distemper, bordetella).  She is HW positive and has started treatment.

Owner Info: Baby was picked up in the middle of a busy highway in the pouring rain in late February of 2013. Her current owner suspects she has been abandoned. She is an outdoor dog right now and is not housetrained but does walk on a leash. She is good with adults and with other dogs. She is described as "very smart and can figure out how to navigate her environment very quickly." The current owner said that Baby is very overweight and it appears she might have spent a lot of time being confined in a small space with no exercise. However, she is now eager to take walks and loves them! The current owner wrote: "She is sweet and smart and would make a wonderful pet. She will adapt well and be a wonderful companion. She doesn't deserve to be penned up and neglected like she obviously has been."

Update 9/15/13: Baby continues to lose weight and she is doing just fine in her current home. This morning her owner wrote: "I think she is looking pretty good. She is doing great but I still think she would enjoy more full-time companionship.  She is a funny girl. We are looking forward to the cool weather so she can be more active. She is very proud because she has lost enough weight to be able to scratch her own ears and bathe. Also, that tail wag is getting better. She can get it horizontal now. She had no muscles to even be able to wag her tail when we got her.  She is very special."

Update 11/27/13: Baby's owner has updated us: “Baby and I just got back from the vet. She needed updated shots so I had to take her in to the vet. This is a different vet who thinks that she may be older. She believes that Baby has been spayed. Her heart worm test was positive, which was the bad news, but the vet seems to think the regimen she gave me will work, which is what they do with older dogs who can't do the standard heart worm treatment. She seems to think we can have the problem resolved in 7-8 months. She believes the blindness is caused by cataracts. After the holiday I will get some recommended "old dog" blood work done to check her out further. But Baby is doing just fine. She ONLY weighed 132 pounds, so she has lost a little weight. She is a character. It is quite a sight watching her squeeze into my Mustang. It's no problem for my "little" 65 pound Lab, who sits in the front seat like a little person. But Baby has a way to go before she is comfortable there :-) All in all, I think she is a pretty lucky girl. She is so sweet and gentle. She has never growled or snapped at anyone. When she gets really mad, she swings her head back and forth with her mouth open, baring her teeth, but that's about it.”
