Hannah - In BDRA Foster Care

Name: Hannah
Age: 9 years
Sex: Female (scheduled to be spayed early April)
Breed: Cocker Spaniel
Location: Louisiana

Vet Info: Hannah is up to date on her shots. She has not had a HW test. She is not spayed but the owner has made an appointment for the spay in early April 2013. She is missing one eye and is scheduled to have the other eye removed when she is in for her spay. She is in good health.

Owner Info: Hannah's owner's health is deteriorating and she has to keep Hannah in a crate much of the time. Hannah is 9 years old and weighs 18 pounds. She was housebroken but has spent so much time in the crate that she will need some retraining. She does know the following commands: outside, sit, cages, down, and come. She is a shy dog who is good with people of all ages. She is also good with dogs and cats. Hannah already has one eye removed. On April 12th, Hannah is scheduled to have her other eye removed and to be spayed. Hannah's owner wrote: "She is very active, very healthy, loves to play outside, chews on toys, cuddles. Vet says that even blind, she has at least another 3 to 5 years of an active, healthy life. She is small, and has the most beautiful sable coat."

Jadetto

Name: Jadetto
Age: 10 years
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Cocker Spaniel
Location: Louisiana

Vet Info: Jadetto has been neutered and is up to date on his shots. He is HW negative. He is in good health.

Owner Info: Jadetto's owner's health is deteriorating and she has to keep Jadetto in a crate much of the time. Jadetto is 10 years old and weighs 28 pounds. He is neutered. He was housebroken but has spent so much time in the crate that he will need some retraining. He does know the following commands: outside, sit, cages, down, and come. He is an outgoing dog who is good with people of all ages, and also good with other dogs and cats. One time he was aggressive; his owner wrote: He has only been aggressive with one other male dog, but it was the other dog who was the aggressor. So Jadetto was only standing his ground. He shares an extra large crate with another dog and neither have aggression issues. He is a total love bug, and just wants to lay next to you or follow you around the house. He loves toys and chew bones and belly rubs. He will lay on the couch with you. He gets around well, even though blind. He can still see a little."

Update 5/30/2013: Jadetto was recently adopted, but it didn't work out:(   He needed some help with housetraining in his new home, and his new owner did not have the time to deal with it, so he is coming back to his long time owner.  His long time owner has serious health issues and she really needs Jadetto to find a forever home soon!!   Because she is not well, Jadetto has to spend a lot of time in a crate.  His long time owner says Jadetto is a "bundle of love."

Snowy - Staying With Owner

Name: Snowy
Age: 15 years
Breed: Mixed breed but looks like a bichon
Sex: Male (altered)
Location: New Brunswick, NJ area

Vet InfoSnowy is confirmed neutered, but they were unable to confirm his vaccines or heartworm status. Snowy weighs 25 - 27 pounds.

Owner Info: Snowy's owner has a business that is two hours away. The last few years she has been staying near her work several nights a week. Until this year she has hired people to come in to her house to feed and take care of Snowy, but this past year she has had very unreliable people and has been forced to put Snowy in a kennel weekly. He actually spent two months straight there this winter. It is not the life she wants for him nor he deserves. Now they are moving and can not take him with them.  They are hoping Snowy can find the wonderful home he deserves.  Snowy is an indoor dog with run of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained.  Snowy can be somewhat shy and has had no real experience with other animals.  I asked her how she thought he would be with other animals and she wrote, "His behavior is that of a senior. He wouldn't bother with any other animal. If they start with him I think he would go in the other direction. If they don't approach him he probably wouldn't see them or know that they are there..." He has "natural vision loss due to aging".  Snowy knows the commands "sit" and "down" (for lay down).  Snowy is not possessive of toys, treats, or food and has never shown any aggression.  His owner writes, "Snowy's hearing is not great. He sees shadows and hears whistling and hand clapping. He gets around our house very well. Sometimes running. He has lots of energy. The vet and kennel can not believe his age. I belive he will still live a long time. He has no illness' and gets around fine. He needs a quiet home. He doesn't want a lot attention. He wants to eat and sleep and go out for plenty of exercise. We have a large fenced in yard. He goes out many times a day and he is a happy well adjusted dog. However young children or people running makes him nervous. He is a sweet dog with a wonderful temperment and needs a calm home. He doesn't want or need a lot of attention just to have his basic needs taken care of and a pat on the head now and then."

Daisy - Status Unknown

Name: Daisy
Breed: Boston Terrier
Sex: Female (altered)
Age: 10 years
Location: Chattanooga, TN area

Vet Info: Daisy is confirmed spayed.  Her last vaccines were given on 4/28/08, and there is no record of a recent heartworm test. The last heartworm test given was in 2003, and Daisy was negative.  She is overweight at 25 pounds.

Owner Info: Daisy's parents have asked their daughter to find a home for Daisy, a 10 year old Boston Terrier. Daisy has had many health problems over the years  and had to have one eye removed approximately 2 years ago due to hemorrhage.  She is almost completely blind in the other eye and is losing her hearing. Daisy is currently living in her owners' "very nice garage in a dog run with 3 Schnauzers (one of which is diabetic)". Her owners are unable to give Daisy the attention she deserves as they both work full time and lead a busy lifestyle. They feel that Daisy needs to be someone's bed buddy and she should be living inside a home.   Daisy is an indoor dog who is crated, she is housebroken and leash trained.  She is good with people of all ages and with other dogs and cats.  She has never shown any aggression and is not possessive of toys, treats, or food.  The daughter says, "Daisy deserves a warm, loving home with people who can give her the time and affection she needs. Competing with 3 other dogs and a cat, as well as staying in the garage, is just not a good environment for an older blind dog."  She is a happy, sweet dog and never seems bothered by anything at all.

Goliath - At Shelter

Name:  Goliath
Breed:  Pit Mix
Age: 2 years
Sex: Male (neutered per owner, not confirmed)
Location: Southwest North Carolina

Vet Info: Yet to be verified.

Owner Info: "I got him from this nasty pound in my area, the whole place smells like dog crap, and they only keep the dogs for a week before they put them down. I called the humane society but they don't take pit bulls. So I rescued him. They told me he was dog aggressive, but didn't tell me he was blind. (Not that it mattered, but you think it would be something they would mention). I learned that he probably only has 5% of his sight. It was blatantly obvious that he had been fought or was used as a bait dog because he has various scars on his head and legs. At first I had a friend fostering him and he was on a runner with a dog house, unless it rained then they brought him inside and kept him in a spare bathroom. Unfortunately though, they lived in a neighborhood that has a lot of dogs that wander about and one day a dog wandered in the yard and started a fight with him. He got hurt, so I took him home. I've been keeping him in our mudroom for most of the winter, but now that it's gotten warmer I let him out on the runner for a while each day and always bring him back in at night. He's house trained though I doubt he would no to walk to a door if he needed to go out, he might if he got used to that, but I have him on a walking schedule, maybe every 3-4 hours and then he's fine over night, and he's done really well with that. He's a good walker, if you have him on a path or in a fenced in yard, once he has the layout he will rarely bump into anything, but he will at first. When your walking him, I've got him to where you can essentially steer him, pull left he'll go left, pull right and he'll go right, if he's fixed on something and not heeding your pulling then you can say "left" or "right" and he'll listen. My friend who was fostering him has an 19 month old daughter and they (very cautiously) introduced Goliath to her and he was so sweet! At most he would lick her like crazy, but he was always very gentle. My vet believes he's been blind since birth because he tends to like to jump on people, but he never so much as lifted a paw to that little girl! He was always very careful around her. He hasn't had any professional training. It's no excuse, but it's not something I can afford. I have taught him to sit and we're working on shake. He's really good on a leash unless he catches the scent of a cat or hears something like a bird, he then wants to charge after it, but if your strong and get him back on track he'll be ok. But you do need a good amount of strength. He weighs about 63 lbs. last time he was weighed. He's very attentive and loving. On rainy days I've been walking him and, from no fault of his, I've slipped and fell and he will immediately stop and come back and sniff like "Are you Ok?" He loves to be loved and loves to give it back. He's never really liked blankets unless they are covering a cushion for some odd reason, otherwise he'll tear them up. He's also been known to eat/chew up clothes out of the laundry. If you could just spread the word that he's in desperate need of a home I would greatly appreciate it. He recently got into a fight with my first pit bull Atlas, they're both ok, but my dad has only given me until this coming Thursday to find him a home or I'll have to put him to sleep. :( Please tell anyone whose interested that I will bring him to them! I'd like to do a home check. Thank you so much for your help!

Update 3/30/2013: "I did actually find a shelter in SC that's willing to take him, it'll give me more time to find him a forever home! I'm pretty happy about it! :) Actually the shelter in SC I just told you about does need me to buy a kennel for him so they can keep him for me. I'm not sure how expensive it is yet, but I'm willing to do it so he can have a nice place to stay until I find him a forever home! Thank you all so much!"

Ruger is currently living outside in a barn. He weighs about 50 pounds. He is not neutered or housebroken but does well on a leash. Holly - Staying With Owner

Name: Holly
Age: 9 years
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Lhasa Apso
Location: Maryland

Vet Info: Holly is current on her rabies and lepto. The vet has decided to no longer vaccinate her against distemper because of her age. She is spayed and is blind.

Owner Info: Holly is a 9 year old sweet girl who has been blind for years. Her owner has become very ill and can no longer take care of her, so his daughter has had Holly for the past five months. She loves Holly and would love to keep her, but she is caring for her father along with her husband (husband has ALS) and she just cannot continue to care for Holly too. Holly does very well with other dogs and cats, and is very "mellow." She gets around the house well; she is housetrained and leash trained. She knows a few commands, including come, sit, stay, time to eat, and time to go to bed. She is very healthy! Her right eye has been removed and the left eye has a cataract. And she gets along with people of all ages!

Bean and his Sister - In BDRA Foster Care

Names: Bean and his sister (no name given)
Breed:  AKC Labradors
Sex: Bean (male) and sister
Age: 4 weeks
Location: Northwestern Louisiana

Vet info: Bean and his sister have been bottle fed their entire lives.  Bean's sister had an eye infection at one week old and was treated.  They have been wormed three times and have had one parvo only shot.  They weigh 1 1/2 pounds.

Owner Info: Bean and his sister (no name given) are adorable AKC lab puppies who were born blind.  Bean is a male chocolate lab and his sister is the black lab.  Their mother had 11 and killed all but these two.  They have been with a rescue since they were three days old and have been bottle fed their whole lives.  They are very small.   Their current rescue has 60 bottle babies in their care.  Their rescue is extremely concerned that Bean and his sister will end up as bait dogs or in the wrong hands and they are doing everything they can think of to help these special pups find good homes.  They note that the pups' health appears to be good other than being blind.

Lady - Adopted

Name: Lady
Breed: Poodle
Age: 7 years
Sex: Female (confirmed altered)
Location: Little Rock, AR area

Vet Info: Lady is confirmed spayed.  On 3/15/13 Lady was given a steroid injection and antiobiotics for her ears. She is utd on rabies, bordetella and Da2pp, next vaccines are due 3/1/14. She is confirmed heartworm negative.  Lady weighs 13 pounds.

Owner Info: Unfortunately, Lady's adopter has a health issue that interfered with her ability to care for Lady, and Lady was returned to rescue yesterday.   Lady is a beautiful and friendly little purebred poodle who is great with other dogs.  Lady was left at her home when her rural Arkansas family moved away.  She was saved by a small rescue, but her rescue's demographic leaves a special needs dog limited opportunity for adoption.  Lady is an indoor dog with run of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained.  Lady is good with other dogs and adults, but she is somewhat nervous due to her limited vision, and a home without smaller children would be best for her as children frighten her.  From what we understand, the home where she was found abandoned was full of small children.  Lady has cloudy eyes with limited distance vision.  She can see right in front of her but sudden movements frighten her.  She has itchy skin that we think will clear up with higher quality food and time.  Lady is a very good girl and a wonderful lap dog!

Sammy - Adopted

Name: Sammy
Age: 6 years
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Dogue de Bordeaux Mix
Location: Connecticut

Vet Info: Sammy's rabies shot is good until March of 2015 and her distemper shot is good until December of 2013. She is HW negative. She weighs 88 pounds and has been spayed.

Owner Info: Sammy was pulled from a high-kill shelter in Connecticut and is currently with a rescue group. She is being fostered in a home with two senior male dogs and, because Sammy is not animal-friendly, she needs a new home. She is housetrained and is overall very healthy. She is blind in one eye and has chipped and missing teeth. The rescue said: "It looks like she could have been hit by something that caused the damage." Her foster mom wrote: "Sammy is very loveable with people, including children. She is well behaved and does not jump up or play rough. Sammy is crate trained, walks well on a leash, and knows basic commands: sit, down, and stay. She has no food aggression. The only thing she does not like to have done to her is clipping her nails, but she was fine with a bath, grooming, and ear cleaning. Sammy does not like other dogs, and it appears it doesn’t matter whether they are male or female. She will bark and growl at them from a distance. I have not allowed her close to my dogs since the initial greeting, as my one male is not overly dog friendly either and needs to be alpha. Based on the initial greet, I knew Sammy would not back down. I would not risk my dogs' safety as they are very old with medical issues. While on walks in the park, she will bark at other dogs sometimes, but always “goes on alert” as if she would run towards them, so I maintain a safe distance around other dogs. As for other animals, she chases squirrels in her yard. She is extremely interested in my cat (never in same room or without a fence/gate between them though) and becomes fixated on her or where she has been. Sammy has never charged her or gotten close enough, as the cat just runs away. She is interested in my parrot, but seems a little scared of it, as she probably has not experienced a bird in a house before. I truly believe she needs to be in a home with no other pets. She has been in my home for almost three months and I still can not allow her near my dogs. Sammy has gotten used to them though, as she doesn’t bark or growl at them anymore when they walk by the room she is in."

Lucy - Adopted, Ethel - Staying With Owner

Name: Lucy and Ethel
Age: 3 months (DOB 12/10/2012)
Sex: Females (not altered)
Breed: Sharpei/Feist Mix
Location: Connecticut

Vet Info: Unable to be verified.

Owner Info: Lucy and Ethel are part of a larger litter where their three brothers have both sight and hearing.  They were born 12-10-12.  Their owner says that they are normal, happy, chewing machines!  This is what the owner has told us – “These two adorable girls were born deaf and partially blind. Vet has checked them and says other than that they are very happy and healthy small doggies. They really should stay together and must live indoors. Ideal would be small fenced in yard for outdoor time, BUT they are defenseless to predators as they can't hear anything coming up from behind. It would not be fair to make them live outdoors. I'm guessing Lucy (lil red one) will be about 8-10 lbs and Ethel (white one) will be about 12 lbs when full grown. They have had shots and been dewormed. (need rabies shots at 4mo's). They are tons of fun and spoiled rotten. They sleep on the furniture and get lots of snacks. It's a big responsibilty to give these kids a good home, so please respond only if you have the patience and space to raise *special-needs* puppies! Thank you.”

Baby - Staying With Owner

Name: Baby
Age: 8 to 9 years (maybe older)
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: German Shepherd Mix
Location: Pensacola, FL

Vet Info: Baby saw the vet on March 1, 2013. The vet office said that Baby seems to be in good health. Because she was a stray, there is no record of any shots and she was not given any by the vet. She is not spayed. She is blind but the cause is unknown. She weighs 136 pounds and is about 8-9 years old. She has been treated for tapeworm. The vet office said that Baby is a "very pretty girl." Baby went back to the vet in November and the vet has verified Baby's spay and Baby is now up-to-date on all shots (rabies, distemper, bordetella).  She is HW positive and has started treatment.

Owner Info: Baby was picked up in the middle of a busy highway in the pouring rain in late February of 2013. Her current owner suspects she has been abandoned. She is an outdoor dog right now and is not housetrained but does walk on a leash. She is good with adults and with other dogs. She is described as "very smart and can figure out how to navigate her environment very quickly." The current owner said that Baby is very overweight and it appears she might have spent a lot of time being confined in a small space with no exercise. However, she is now eager to take walks and loves them! The current owner wrote: "She is sweet and smart and would make a wonderful pet. She will adapt well and be a wonderful companion. She doesn't deserve to be penned up and neglected like she obviously has been."

Update 9/15/13: Baby continues to lose weight and she is doing just fine in her current home. This morning her owner wrote: "I think she is looking pretty good. She is doing great but I still think she would enjoy more full-time companionship.  She is a funny girl. We are looking forward to the cool weather so she can be more active. She is very proud because she has lost enough weight to be able to scratch her own ears and bathe. Also, that tail wag is getting better. She can get it horizontal now. She had no muscles to even be able to wag her tail when we got her.  She is very special."

Update 11/27/13: Baby's owner has updated us: “Baby and I just got back from the vet. She needed updated shots so I had to take her in to the vet. This is a different vet who thinks that she may be older. She believes that Baby has been spayed. Her heart worm test was positive, which was the bad news, but the vet seems to think the regimen she gave me will work, which is what they do with older dogs who can't do the standard heart worm treatment. She seems to think we can have the problem resolved in 7-8 months. She believes the blindness is caused by cataracts. After the holiday I will get some recommended "old dog" blood work done to check her out further. But Baby is doing just fine. She ONLY weighed 132 pounds, so she has lost a little weight. She is a character. It is quite a sight watching her squeeze into my Mustang. It's no problem for my "little" 65 pound Lab, who sits in the front seat like a little person. But Baby has a way to go before she is comfortable there :-) All in all, I think she is a pretty lucky girl. She is so sweet and gentle. She has never growled or snapped at anyone. When she gets really mad, she swings her head back and forth with her mouth open, baring her teeth, but that's about it.”

Louise - Adopted

Name: Louise (Weezie)
Breed: Poodle
Sex: Female (unknown if altered)
Age: Senior
Location: Between Nashville and Knoxville, TN

Vet Info: Louise's (Weezie) spay status is not known, and her caretaker notes, "It does not look as if she has had any puppies in the past so she could be".  Weezie has not had a recent heartworm test.  She has bilateral cataracts (completely blind) and peridontal disease, but otherwise seems healthy for an older girl!  She is not up to date on vaccines, and her current caretaker and vet agreed to take a wait and see approach before vaccinating her.  She is currently being treated for ear infections.  Weezie weighs 9 pounds.

Owner Info: Weezie's and Thelma's owner passed away and a relative brought them to a local shelter.  Their caretaker saw them scared and shivering in the shelter, knew they wouldn't make it, and pulled them both.  She is now hoping for rescue placement for both as she has several dogs and is unable to keep them.  Weezie is a very sweet little girl!  When she was pulled from the shelter, she was severely matted, but her caretaker has had her groomed.  She is an indoor dog with run of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained.  She is good with both men and women, although due to her age and size, she may do better in a home without younger children.  She is also great with other dogs and cats!  She is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, and has never shown any aggression.  Her caretaker says, "Personality is also excellent. Very friendly, happy and lovable girl, gets along with other dogs and cats and also does not bark. Neither dog demands anything of you. They seem so happy to have a warm dry bed and some food." This is what their caretaker said when I asked about placing them together:  "Placing them together would surely be preferred. They seem bonded but only as far as being familiar. I can imagine being blind that it helps to have a familiar friend in strange surroundings. But they do not appear to be so bonded to the point that I feel they would not adjust if separated. I watched as the two began playing last evening and it was right comical to see two old blind lady's trying to find each other for a wrestle on there bed lol. I think they enjoyed there spa day backed up with a good meal and a warm bed. The groomer said they were both absolute dolls and gave not one ounce of grief with their grooming and all day stay. She said they were very cooperative and quiet but I knew that already :)"

Thelma - Adopted

Name: Thelma (Possum)
Breed: Chi Mix
Sex: Female (not known if altered)
Age: Senior
Location: Between Nashville and Knoxville, TN

Vet Info:  Thelma's (Possum) spay status is not known, and her caretaker says it looks like she has had numerous litters in the past.   She has dry eye which appears to have not been treated for a long time (she does not see much), and peridontal disease, but otherwise seems healthy for an older girl!   She is not up to date on vaccines, and her current caretaker and vet agreed to take a wait and see approach before vaccinating her. She has not had a recent heartworm test.  Thelma weighs 7 pounds.

Owner Info: Weezie's and Thelma's owner passed away and a relative brought them to a local shelter. Their caretaker saw them scared and shivering in the shelter, knew they wouldn't make it, and pulled them both. When Thelma was pulled from the shelter, she was scratching a lot and may have a flea allergy, but she is being treated for this and her grooming has also helped with her skin.  Their caretaker is now hoping for rescue placement for both as she has several dogs and is unable to keep them.  Thelma is an indoor dog with run of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained. She is good with both men and women, although due to her age and size, she may do better in a home without younger children. She is also great with other dogs and cats! She is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, and has never shown any aggression.   Her caretaker says, "7 pounds, senior age unknown. Severe dry eye, visually impaired but not blind, flea allergies, needs a dental and looks to have been breed numerous times but over all she is in good shape for her age. Personality is excellent! Does not bark, gets along with other dogs and cats, house broken, A very sweet and loving dog." This is what their caretaker said when I asked about placing them together: "Placing them together would surely be preferred. They seem bonded but only as far as being familiar. I can imagine being blind that it helps to have a familiar friend in strange surroundings. But they do not appear to be so bonded to the point that I feel they would not adjust if separated. I watched as the two began playing last evening and it was right comical to see two old blind lady's trying to find each other for a wrestle on their bed lol. I think they enjoyed there spa day backed up with a good meal and a warm bed. The groomer said they were both absolute dolls and gave not one ounce of grief with there grooming and all day stay. She said they were very cooperative and quiet but I knew that already :)"
