Poochie - Adopted

Name: Poochie
Breed: Australian Shepherd
Age: Approximately one year
Sex: Female (altered)
Location: Little Rock, AR area

Vet Info: Poochie is confirmed spayed and up to date on vaccines.  Her next rabies vaccine is due 10/7/14.  She is heartworm negative.  Poochie weighs about 30 pounds.

Owner Info: Poochie is a beautiful girl who is blind in her right eye.  She was surrendered to her current rescue by a family who did not have time for her.  The family bought her from a flea market when she was 6 weeks old.  They had her on Craig's List and were going to take her to a shelter and her current rescue could not let that happen.  Her current rescue is a smaller-sized rescue and they are hoping for adoption or placement with a more experienced rescue so Poochie can get the training she needs.  They write, "She is a sweet dog and just needs some training by someone familiar with the breed".  Poochie is an outdoor dog with a fenced yard and is housebroken but not leash trained.  She is good with people of all ages and both male and female dogs.  She is not possessive of toys, treats, or food and has never shown any aggression.  Her current rescue writes, "We are currently treating Poochie for tapes, hooks, and coccidia. besides that- she looks good!"

Update 4/15/14: Poochie is now called Patty by her rescue, and Patty still needs a home!! She also needs some training, like most dogs do, but she is a great dog with her whole life ahead of her! Please help Patty get a new home!

Oscar - Adopted

Name: Oscar
Age: 7 years
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Shih Tzu
Location: East of Baltimore, MD

Vet Info: Oscar is neutered. He had a three year rabies shot in September 2013. He was found to be HW negative in November of 2012.

Owner Info: Oscar's owner has had him for about a year. He is an outdoor dog in a fenced yard. He is 14-17 pounds. He is not housetrained or leash-trained. He is good with people of all ages and with other dogs. If a dog bothers him, he will run and hide. He will snap at people if he is scared/when he is in a new place, but his owner said that he adjusted to her quickly and responds well to love and attention. His current owner is not able to give him the time and attention he needs, plus she does not have the money to care for him as she would like, so is hoping he can find a new home. He loves to run around the yard and loves to have his ears scratched. If his owner is sitting on the floor, he loves to crawl on her lap!

Misty - Adopted

Name: Misty
Breed: Yorkie
Age: Estimated 6 or 7 years
Sex: Female (altered)
Location: Katy, TX area

Vet Info: Misty is confirmed spayed and up to date on vaccines.  She is next due for her rabies vaccine on 7/15/14 and is up to date on bordetella and DHPPV.  She is heartworm negative and microchipped.  Misty weighs about 5 pounds.

Owner Info: Misty's owners found this little girl near their home in July.  She was extremely matted and very skinny.  She had a collar on, but only "Misty" was on the tag.  She is not micro chipped.  They have been unable to find her owners.  Misty is an indoor dog with run of the house, she is housebroken but not leash trained.   She is very sweet and loving! Her owner writes, " At the time, we decided to make Misty part of our family, which we have, we love her very much.  With a heavy heart I am writing because we are unable to continue keeping her in our home.  She has started to become aggressive to our yorkie that we had before Misty.  Our 1st yorkie is smaller than Misty, not sure if this has anything to do with it. Misty gets along fine with our lab.  She is also fine with our 2 year old son.  Here is some updated information on Misty since we have had her...The vet guesses she is 6-7 years old.  She is negative for diabetes, her blindness is caused by cataracts, but the vet says it is genetic since she is young and doesn't have diabetes.  She is also negative for heartworms (she has been on prevention meds since she has been with us).  Her skin was itchy and her hair was falling out when we got her, so the vet tested form mange, but that was negative as well.  We treated the itchy skin and she is better now, her hair growing normally.  She is up to date on her shots now and has been microchipped.  Her blindness doesn't hinder her much, she has learned to navigate our home and gets around really well.  She is housebroken but does have accidents if you aren't frequent about putting her outside."

Owner Info: Gizmo's owner passed away recently and the family left poor Gizmo in an empty house with no one to care for him.  His deceased owner's daughter has asked his caregiver to take him and find him a loving home that will give him proper medical care as he has been neglected, and his caregiver is doing her best.  He is with her niece, and she is unable to keep him for long.  They have only had him for a few days.  Gizmo is an indoor dog with run of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained.  They believe Gizmo has cataracts.  Gizmo is good with people of all ages, and with both dogs and cats.  He currently lives with two larger dogs and several cats.  Gizmo is not possessive of toys, treats, or food and has never bitten or snapped.  When asked if the dog adapts well, his caregiver writes, "Gizmo has did great with his new environment. was a little anxious at first with labored breathing but quickly adapted to his new surroundings.. Does not like to be left alone.  Feels very secure on your lap."  She also writes, "Since I only met this little guy 2 days ago I am not sure of his true medical condition.  His grooming needs have been terribly neglected.  Nails were so long they were curled to the side.  Hair is very matted. Seems to have issues with breathing on occasion.  My niece said he is a wonderful old guy and is full of love and kisses."

Dominic - In Foster Care

Name: Dominic
Age: 3-4 years
Sex: Male (not confirmed altered)
Breed: Pit Bull
Location: Houston, Texas

Vet Info:  No vet information available.

Owner Info: I found him a week ago walking into moving (and swerving) vehicles and quickly realized he was blind. My husband and I cannot keep him but applied Frontline and are keeping him in a crate in our garage. He weighs 40-50 lbs. We put him on our community's Facebook page (that's how we heard of Blind Dog Rescue), I called all of the rescues in my area and beyond, and I have spread the word in my community. I took him to the vet and had him scanned for a microchip. He has one but all of the contact numbers were the wrong numbers or did not return our calls. We found him with fleas and no collar, so we don't want to pass judgment but are thinking it may be a possibility that he wasn't wanted. Also, all of the foster groups I called within 3 hours of where we live were maxed out and the shelters are all kill shelters. His microchip had him listed as "Monster," but he doesn't respond to that. We have been calling him "Dominic." Owner states that Dominic is neutered but that has not been confirmed.  He is housebroken; leash trained; knows basic commands; outgoing; good with all people and dogs.  Owners have two cats that ran when they saw Dominic but he did not chase. Owner feels Dominic adapts well and stated “He readily got in my car when I found him, is great on jogs, and waits for me to put him on his leash before he goes wandering around. He seems careful about where he is going (despite me finding him on a busy road). He definitely welcomes direction from his walker/jogger.”

Update 10/8: Dominic is scheduled to be turned in to a kill shelter on Thursday October 10 at 1:00pm.

Update 10/10: Dominic has been given a few extra days.  The owners have given him until Monday, October 16th to find placement or he will be PTS.

Update 4/20/2014: Dominic is safe in a foster home and looking for his permanent home.

Daisy - Adopted

Name: Daisy
Age: 6 years
Sex: Female (altered)
Breed: Mixed Breed
Location: Athens, TN

Vet Info: Daisy is confirmed spayed, UTD with vaccinations and is negative for heartworm (test date May 2013). She is healthy other than blindness due to an eye injury.

Owner Info: Daisy is a big, strong girl who is currently owned by an 83 year old lady.  The owner is concerned that Daisy is too strong for her to handle safely.  Daisy was originally rescued from a shelter.  Her owner reports that Daisy is an indoor dog with the run of the house; housebroken; not formally leash trained but does well on a leash.  Daisy is described as outgoing, good with all people, dogs and cats.  She does not show any aggression with food or toys and the owner feels she adapts well to new situations.  Daisy is described as sweet and loveable and a good watchdog.

Andy - In Foster Care

Name: Andy
Age: 11 years
Sex: Male (confirmed altered)
Breed: Lhasa Apso
Location: Cincinnati, Ohio

Vet Info: Andy is confirmed neutered.  The vet says confirmation of vaccinations might be in the old records but that the owner says he is UTD with everything. Andy is blind due to diabetes and is on insulin and special diet for diabetes.

Owner Info: House we are renting is being foreclosed. Andy (the dog) belonged to the landlady and we kept him for her as part of our rental agreement because he was used to the house and had been here since puppyhood. She paid for his diabetic food and insulin and we physically took care of him. Now she says she doesn't want the house or the dog, she quit paying for Andy's food and medication (along with the mortgage) and we are all going to be without a home soon. We need to find a safe place for Andy by the end of October, when we have to vacate the house.  Needs insulin every 12 hours, happy and healthy as long as he has his medicine and a healthy diabetic diet. Andy is 22 lbs. and reported as being outgoing and good with adults.  He is housebroken, leash trained and an indoor dog with the run of the house.

Update 10/7: “I considered putting an ad on Craigslist but I'm afraid somebody will claim to want a pet in order to obtain a free "bait" dog. But I'm also scared if something doesn't pan out the pound will have to take Andy and I know they would kill him. All the local non-kills are full. I feel so bad and I just don't know what to do. I don't understand why Andy’s owner did this. He's such a sweet little dog and it's killing me, and he's not even my dog. I'm scared for myself and my husband because we're facing potential homelessness but a HUMAN shelter won't kill us the way an animal shelter would Andy. It's just not fair.” Andy needs new home ASAP as family is moving at the end of October!
