Rudy - Adopted

Name: Rudy
Sex: Male (altered)
Breed: Jack Russell/Beagle Mix
Age: 1 year
Location: Carthage, NC

Vet/Medical Info: The only info the vet has about Rudy is that he is neutered and received a one year rabies on 10/11/11. No record of any other vaccinations being given nor a heartworm test. We have been sent medical records from Rudy's foster Mom that verify he was tested for heartworm on 1/26/2012, result negative, he was also given heartgard on this date. He received his second DPP and Bordatella vaccinations on 11/11/2011.

Ophthalmologist Info: Rudy saw an Ophthamologist on 11/28/2011 for third eyelid inflammation, which causes him visual problems, mainly he has trouble seeing down to find things on the floor or go downstairs. Rudy has microphthalmia, a congenital condition he has had since birth. This means his eyeballs are smaller than they should be. He has bilateral protrusion of third eyelids covering the entire pupil and majority of the iris because of the microphthalmia. As Rudy gets older it is possible that his eyes may get a little larger and push his third eyelids back a little more, resulting in better vision. Rudy also has immature capsular cataracts. A lens replacement surgery can be considered for Rudy's future but it would be best to wait until they can see how big Rudy will get and what changes his eyes will undergo as he grows. They would also recommend further diagnostic testing prior to surgery to make sure his retina is functioning properly, making him a good candidate for the surgery. Rudy had another Ophthalmologist appointment three months later on 2/9/2012. His cataract progression is minimal, if present at all however this will likely not be the case long term. Rudy's eyes unfortunately have not grown since his last visit and it is unlikely they will ever grow now. Because of this they do not recommend the cataract surgery, primarily because the outcome will likely be less than desirable and normal vision will most likely never be achieved. Because Rudy has never known any different, his poor vision should not deter him from living a normal, healthy life. A follow up is recommended in six months time to monitor the progression and any adverse effects of his current condition.
Owner Info: Rudy is in foster care with a Lab rescue, they took him from the shelter because they thought they had a home for him, which did not happen. Rudy has been in his current foster home since 10/11/2011. He was examined by NCSU Vet School when they got him and they wanted to exam him again at one year to see if cataract surgery would help. He was re-examined last week, and they said that surgery would compound the situation. He has 40-50% vision and gets around very well. He's been posted on their website, shown to many Jack Russell/beagle lovers and taken to adoptathons. Rudy is currently an indoor dog, confined to one area of the house. He is housebroken and leash trained and knows commands such as come, sit and heel. He is an outgoing boy, good with people and children of all ages as well as other dogs, cats and small animals. He gets around very, very well, can run and play like a normal visioned dog. He can't see well when he gets down out of the car and often needs a little help. He is a very healthy, happy little guy and they want to see him go to a very loving home.
