Pickle - In Foster Care

Name: Pickle
Age: Estimated 6-10 years
Breed: Pit/Boxer Mix?
Sex: Male (altered)
Location: Wilmington, NC area

Vet Info: Pickle is confirmed neutered and up to date on his rabies vaccine.  He is heartworm negative.  Pickle weighs about 50 pounds.

Owner Info: Pickle is a very handsome boy whose owner believes would do better in a home where someone is home more often.  She writes that she is absent for work for long periods, and she feels that "Pickle's separation anxiety is causing him to be unable to adjust to his blindness".  She tells us "his stress is tremendous and I cannot stand to see him suffer.  I just want to do what is best for him.... Even though, no accidents in the house, no problems-other than that he seems to be terrified. My heart is breaking for him."  She is hoping to find rescue or a new loving home for Pickle. Pickle's owner has had him for about five years.  He had limited vision when she adopted him, but has now gone completely blind  His owner writes that Pickle has been diagnosed with retinal atrophy and it's irreversible.  Other than his blindness and the stress caused by it, she tells us Pickle is a healthy dog (but a little overweight due to inactivity because he walks slowly now).  Pickle is an indoor dog with run of the house, he is housebroken (he also uses a doggie door leading to a fenced yard) and leash trained.  Pickle knows basic commands such as sit, lay, and stop, and he's learning down and step up! Pickle is a friendly fellow!  His owner describes him as outgoing, and says he's good with people of all ages, male and female dogs, and cats!  He lives with a cat now.  Pickle is not possessive of toys, treats, or food.  She did share an incident where Pickle snapped and growled at another dog, but this is the only time this has ever happened.  "Since his blindness, he snapped and growled at a dog who surprised him from behind. He did not bite and when he knows a dog is approaching, he is very friendly." When answering the question about whether your dog adapts well to new situations, Pickle's owner writes, "I think he will but is struggling at this point. He has found his way in and out of the house despite his blindness but at times. I find him trembling and scared to move when I come home from work. The long absence seems to trigger this."  This has been a very difficult decision for Pickle's owner.  She wants us to know, "Pickle has the sweetest disposition and loves all people and animals. This is heartbreaking for me."

Panda - In Foster Care

Name: Panda
Age: 2 ½ months
Sex: Male (not altered)
Breed: Great Pyrenees Mix
Location: Tulsa, OK area

Vet Info:  Panda is not yet neutered and has not had a heartworm test.  He has had his first set of vaccines and will be due for his next vaccines in three weeks.  He is on flea and heartworm preventative and has been dewormed.  Panda weighs about 10 pounds currently. They also gave us more info on Panda's eye condition:
"Panda is completely blind, and he has no chance of regaining vision. We believe he had glaucoma at a very young age which caused him to lose his vision as it was not treated. However, his current eye pressures are normal (they believe that his eyes became so damaged that they are no longer able to produce aqueous solution, which is why the pressures are back to normal) and he is not painful. However, there is a chance that the glaucoma will come back, and at that point the treatment will be either enucleation or evisceration with insertion of a prosthesis."

Owner Info: DOB around 2/14/15. Panda is an adorable little puppy who was brought into a teaching hospital with his litter for evaluation.  When his owners realized he was blind, they elected to surrender him.  He is currently staying with a veterinary student who is hoping to find him rescue!  She has had him for one week. Panda is an indoor dog who is crated, he is not yet housebroken or leash trained, but he's doing great with his training!  His caregiver gave us more details:  "We are working on training. He is very responsive to me and his name - i.e. he happily comes when I call "Panda come!". We are working on "no" - I can't tell if he knows the word no, or if he gets distracted by my voice when he is doing something wrong and stops because he heard me. I put his harness on him for the first time yesterday, and we are working on leash training. He is comfortable with my fenced in yard and runs around like a happy puppy in it, and I am slowly trying to get him used to other environments. I would say he is about 70% house broken...when he has an accident, it is usually my fault as I didn't get there in time."  Panda is not possessive of toys, treats, or food and has never shown aggression. Panda is good with men and women and both male and female dogs.  His caregiver writes that he loves her 50 pound female dog!!  She wants us to know that she didn't say he's good with cats or children because she's never seen Panda with them, but she says she has "no reason to believe that he wouldn't do fantastic with kids/small dogs/cats, as he seems to love everyone/thing he is presented with."  She tells us Panda is happy, smart, sweet and he's doing great!  "I have only had him about a week and he has adapted so well to my house! He LOVES his crate, and he is comfortable in my yard and runs around and plays. He knows where his water is in my living room, and he knows where my chair is when he wants to snuggle. I have a little room set up for him on my enclosed porch that is his, and he happily hangs out there on his dog bed and knows where his food and water is. He will also go in and out (down the small set of steps) on his own to go potty when I'm directing him. I honestly forget he's blind half the time.... I love this puppy and would keep him if I could, however my dog is old and cranky and I want him to have a home where he can bond with any other pets. I am also about to start my clinical year of vet school, and I know that I can't give him the time and attention he deserves long term. Every rescue around here that I have contacted has dismissed us because he is blind, and I just want to find him a loving home, wherever that may be. I really appreciate any help you can provide in finding this sweet boy a home."

Sex: Male (altered)

Owner Info: Lenny is an adorable little boy whose owners feel he would do better in another home.  They have had Lenny for three years.  They don't want to rehome Lenny and are broken-hearted, but he's aggressive towards their male dog who's been in their house for many years.  They've tried many things and don't believe there is a medical cause. Lenny is an indoor dog who is crated, he is housebroken and leash trained.  Lenny appears completely blind due to cataracts, but his owners will have more information after he sees the ophthalmologist.  He knows his name and can follow the sound of snapping and voice commands, and his owners feel he adapts well to new situations.  Lenny is good with both men and women, but a home without small children is recommended.  He is good with female dogs and cats, and he likes to follow the female dog in the house!  Lenny is not possessive of toys, treats, or food.  His owner gave us more details about how he is with the male dog in the home:  "Lenny has bit the other dog in the house but when you raise your voice he stops. He also bit at me once but it was because the other dog was in the area. He does not like male dogs!" His owners also want us to know that he's very sweet!!  "Lenny is a very sweet dog despite his aggression towards the male dog in the house. He has a routine and follows it."

Oreo - Adopted

Name: Oreo
Age: 6 years
Breed: Chow/Border Collie
Sex: Male (altered)
Location: Framingham, MA area

Vet Info: Oreo is confirmed neutered and up to date on vaccines.  He is next due for his rabies vaccine in November, 2017.  He received the distemper vaccine on 10/10/14.  Oreo's owner writes that he is heartworm negative, but this has not yet been confirmed.  Oreo weighs about 55 pounds. Oreo had very bad glaucoma and had his eyes removed about two weeks ago.  His owner writes that he's recovering very well!

Owner Info:  Oreo is a very handsome fellow who is looking for a new home.   His current owner got him from a friend who had rescued him from a shelter.  That person's pug started attacking Oreo, so his current owner brought him to Massachusetts because her stepfather had been wanting a dog. Unfortunately, her stepfather now has health issues and isn't able to care for Oreo anymore, and so she now has Oreo.  She has several rescue dogs and cats and is not able to care for Oreo the way he deserves. Oreo is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained.  Oreo is good with people of all ages!  He is not possessive of toys, treats, or food and has never shown aggression.  Oreo's owner gave us more details about how he is with other dogs: "Oreo came from a shelter to live with a lovely woman who thought she could care for him in upstate New York. Their pug constantly attacked poor oreo who never saw it coming. Also the daughter ended up with stitches. At any rate - they also had another dog besides the pug who Oreo had no problems with whatsoever. He was a male. When I placed Oreo with my step father - he was around a small female dog who he had no issues with. At the vets however, a large dog came over to check Oreo out and Oreo growled. So I guess I don't have a definitive answer for you. I have seen him around dogs and do well. I don't know why he growled at the dog at the vets." Oreo's owner feels he adjusts well to new situations and writes that he adjusted very well to three different homes in a short period of time.  His owner wants us to know that he's a very sweet dog who just wants to be loved and be with his owner!  "Oreo is a very sweet dog who requires very little; if circumstances permitted, we would keep him in a heartbeat but he deserves a loving home with less chaos (i.e. so many other animals) than we can provide."

Update 5/9/15: We've received this update from Oreo's owner and it's getting very hot in her garage.  She's getting desperate to find Oreo a new home or rescue!

"It's starting to get really hot in the garage :(.  Many sad faces. I know you are all trying your darnest... I'm just moving into desperation."

The rescue is looking for a loving home for Charlie since they do not feel that they are equipped to properly help him with his needs. Charlie is an indoor dog who is crated. He is house-broken and leash-trained. He is descried as nervous and good with women. Charlie’s caregiver said he bonded with her very quickly. She said he doesn’t like small dogs and he did well in the home with two dogs his size but not the small one. There were fights but no skin was broken. He doesn’t have a problem with cats. Charlie is not possessive of toys, treat, or food. Charlie’s caregiver says he loves to be outside and run and play. The kennel life is too much for him unless he has an outside run. She said “He loves to play fetch but loses the toy easily if not right in front of him.” She wants us to know he is a very sweet loving dog that needs to feel a part of a family. I would love to find him a home as an only dog but I also think that will time and proper handling he would love to have a big dog to play with too.”

Emma - Outcome Unknown

Name:  Emma
Breed:  Cocker Spaniel
Age:  9 - 11 years
Sex:  Female (altered per owner, not verified)
Location: Fayetteville, NC area

Vet Info: Emma is spayed per her owner, but this is not able to be verified as she was spayed prior to being with her owner.  Emma is not up to date on vaccines and has not had a recent heartworm test.  She weighs about 20 pounds.

Owner Info: Emma is a beautiful Cocker Spaniel whose owner can no longer afford the medical care she needs.  Emma also has a hard time around her owner's young son, and hides whenever he is loud.  She is hoping for a new home for sweet Emma where she will be taken care of and loved.  Emma has been with her owner almost four years. Emma is an indoor dog with run of the house, she is housebroken and leash trained.  Her owner writes Emma can sit if you take two fingers lightly across her head and say sit, and if you tap the top of her crate at night, she will hop right in!  Emma is good with men and women and older children/teenagers, and male and female dogs and cats!  She is a very sweet little girl and is not possessive of toys, treats, or food, and has never shown any aggression.  Emma is completely blind.  Her owner tells us she used to see shadows but cannot any more, and to her knowledge, Emma is in very good health considering her age.  Emma's owner gave us more details about how Emma does in new situations:  "When she first went blind she just seemed to get around just like before. We take her to my mother in laws when we go visit and she got around there just as easy as at home. She does however tend to pee on her self if you try and pick her up or suddenly touch her without saying anything first to let her know your there." Emma's owner wants us to know that Emma is a super sweet and amazing girl!  "Emma is a great dog she is happy just laying in your lap all day. This is extremely hard for our family but this is what is best for her. She needs someone who can afford to take her to the vet regularly. She does need to have someone that can stay with her most of the day. She is crate trained but we only put her in the crate when we go to bed, and then out first thing in the morning. She loves people and children, but since she went blind loud noises scare her so she would do better with older children and in a quiet house hold. Emma is a very special dog and as hard as this is for us she deserves the best possible home."

Update 7/6/15: We've heard from Emma's owner and Emma is still in need of rescue! She is still available and she is doing well. We have started having to feed her wet food because she stopped eating her hard food. But since the switch she has been eating fine.

Her owner says that other than her eye problem, Baby has been a healthy dog.  She gave us more details about Baby's eye condition: "She is well now. She had an onset of glaucoma and it was so quick, that even with all kinds of medications for over a month and a half, her eyes were not getting better. She was treated to remove the eye pressure, but would not keep her eyesight. I feel that she can see light and dark, but she is blind and I keep her on a leash when outside and just keep her close when needed and let her run with me and she acts just as normal and LOVES going out for walks!! :)"  Her owner wants us to know that Baby is a great dog!!!  "I have been PRAYING to find only the BEST PLACE for a lovely lady. She deserves that and more. She is calmed down a lot. She needs more TLC than she is receiving now because of TIME. Gino - Adopted

Name: Gino
Age: 10 years
Breed: Welsh Terrier
Sex: Male (altered)
Location: Jacksonville, FL area

Vet Info: Gino is confirmed neutered and up to dates on vaccines.  He is next due for a rabies vaccine on October 29, 2016.  He is heartworm negative.  Gino weighs about 13 - 14 pounds.  Gino's owner gave us more info about his eyes:  "Gino has had both eyes enucleated. He had cateracts in both eyes and was partially going blind. He chewed apart a steel kennel/cage and bent the wire and poked into one eye, that is when I had that one removed. The other the doctor said had a detached retina and was getting infected frequently and it was decided it would be better just to go ahead and remove that eye also."

Owner Info: Gino is a very handsome little boy who was rehomed from a friend dying of cancer.  Gino's current owner feels he has no quality of life with him as Gino suffers from separation anxiety and his owner works 8 to 10 hours every day, and some weekends.  Gino's owner writes, "the more he is alone, the worse he is getting".  Other rescues have told him that because of Gino's condition and demeanor, they don't think he is adoptable.  Gino's owner is very much hoping for BDRA placement for Gino. Gino is an indoor dog confined to one area of the house, he is housebroken and leash trained.  Gino is good with both male and female dogs, but can be possessive with food.  His owner gave us more details, "He is beginning to snap at me if I try and get on to him when he has messed up the are where he is kept. Even though he is blind he is very stubborn about coming back into the house and will attempt to quickly move away from me when I go and get him to bring him inside."  He also tells us that Gino can find his way back into the house from outside, but does spend a lot of time spinning in circles and can get confused trying to get his bearings. We asked for more details about Gino's behavior:
"Gino seems to be friendly and good with everyone he comes into contact with. He is loved by everyone at his groomers and at the Vet office. I don't have many visitors at home but at my old apartment he would roam through and visit some of the workers in the office downstairs. He was left to roam in the back yard area during the mornings and afternoons.  I believe that the snapping is because he is so unhappy about being locked away when I am not at home. Also if he messes in the house and I try and scold him. He has changed since I moved into the new house. Sleeps most of the time when I am home because he wears himself out when I am gone whining and trying to get out of the area I have him confined in."
His owner also wants us to know, "Gino is a good dog with a good spirit but just needs a home where people or other animals are around so he is not left alone. He loves to chase a full-size basketball around in a contained area and he will spend hours doing that. He is very aggressive with water hoses and sprinklers but is very gentle and does not mind a bath or being groomed. His groomer and his vet love him....I am desperate to find Gino a new home. I took on this responsibility and told his former owner that I would take care of him but he is becoming more needy as he gets older and I would love to have somewhere he could just 'retire' and enjoy the remainder of his life. Being cooped up in my house all day and only being able to roam a few hours in the evening is just not what he deserves."
